Opening Prayer

Text Reading:

Verse 1: Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Who are we?
We are selfish, sinners, desiring our own desires
This is high treason to our Holy and Just God
We are His enemies
We are lawless criminals
We are at war with the Almighty God and we are deserving of the full wrath of God
So, how does one find peace with God?
We must be justified
We must pay for our sinful behavior
Justification is a one-time legal declaration with continuing results, not an ongoing process
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
How is one become justified?
By faith in Jesus as both Lord and Savior
Faith in the completed work of Christ
That He took on the wrath of God in our place
The result of justification is that the sinner’s war with God is ended forever
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
Verse 2: Obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand
You d
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
This refers to the believer’s access to God through Jesus Christ
What was unthinkable to the OT Jew
The term “stand” refers to the permanent, secure position believers enjoy in God’s grace
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
Verse 3: Exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Praise God for our troubles and tribulation
This is so counterintuitive
Remember the apostles as they left prison, they praised God
Remember Paul: had authority questioned, shipwrecked (3 times), beaten nearly to death, imprisoned, bitten by a poisonous snake...
Always praised God and counted it all joy
John Wesley
Why is tribulation and persecution a desirable state for the believer?
It brings about perseverance
Remember?
How does an egg become a boiled egg?
How does dough become bread?
How does lump of clay become a bowel?
How does coal become a diamond?
Without heat none of these things would be possible
God is molding you to be more Christlike...
And this will require so heat...
This will require some pressure
So, praise God for all the troubles, tribulations and persecution in your life
Verse 4-5: Perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint
5 and hope does not disappoint
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Tribulation brings about perserverance
Perseverance will prove our character
Who are we proving ourselves to?
Not to God, He already knows who we are
We are proving ourselves to us
Once we see what God can do using us we are amazed
Look what God did with a stuttering, on the run murder like Moses
Look what God did with a liar and deceiver like Jacob
Look what God did with a murder and adulterer like David
Look what God did with a coward like Gideon
Look what God did with a terrorist like Paul
Look what God did with a murder and adulterer like David
Look what God did with a denier like Peter
Look what God did with a zealous terrorist like Paul
So we have to ask ourselves, What is God doing with us?
This gives us hope
For if God can use the broken to do great things, what really could ever be the limits to His wonder
Verse 5: The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
We experience God’s love through the power of the Holy Spirit
God’s love for us has been lavishly poured out to the point of overflowing
This is a great spiritual check list item if you are concerned whether you are saved or not...
The reality is that God has implanted within our hearts evidence that we belong to Him...
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
In that we love the One who first loved us
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .

Verse 6: For while we were still helpless...Christ died for the ungodly.
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Unregenerate sinners are spiritually dead...
And incapable of doing anything to help themselves
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
Verse 7:
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), Ro 5:6.Make no mistake...
So, make no mistake...
We are not the ones who contribute anything to our salvation
We are not to boast in all our human achievements
WE ARE HELPLESS
WE ARE UNGODLY
We need God
We need a Savior
Verse 8: God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
The Scriptures say that “God is Love”
Not only do we know this because Scripture says so...
But we know this because God demonstrated His love for us
How did He do this?
He died for us
But that’s not all...
He died for us while we were still sinners
He died for us while we were his enemies
He died for us while we were criminals
He died for us while we were in open rebellion
He died for us while we commited high treason
He died for us while we abandoned Him
He died for us while we mocked Him
He died for us while we spit on Him
He died for us while we tore His flesh
He died for us while we pierced Him
He died for us…while He accepted the wrath of God in our place
He died for us while we tore His flesh
So, God’s love for His own is unwavering
Why?
He died foe us as
because it is not based on how lovable we are, but on the constancy of His own character; God’s supreme act of love came when we were at our most undesirable
Because it is not based on how lovable we are...
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
But on the constancy of His own character
God’s supreme act of love came when we were at our most undesirable
Verse 9: We shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
When we say we are saved, what does that really mean?
It not just sin we are saved from...
Its not just our flesh we are saved from...
The reality, is that we are saved from God’s wrath
Verse 10: We were enemies we were reconciled to God
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Although, we are enemies in every sense of that word...
Verse 11:
Because of the work of Christ...
We are reconciled
We now have peace with God...
If we accept the terms of the peace agreement
Considering the alternative…the full wrath of God
We should accept His Amazing Grace
How do you accept a peace treaty when you are the losing party...
How do you accept a peace treaty when the victor is showing mercy and grace...
You have to surrender

Verse 12: Through one man sin entered into the world
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
We have this cancer called sin now in this world because of Adam
Adams have stepped up
Adam was standing next to Eve when the serpent came
Adams first mistake was not protecting Eve
Adam should have interrupted the serpent and said, “No, I am the head of the family, you speak to me”
Adams cowardliness put pressure on Eve to take his place as the head of the family
Then when Eve accepted the serpents evil advice, he did not counsel her or dis-wad her
Adam, then joined his wife in sin
Men, we need to step up and not lead our wives to sin because we don’t accept the responsibilities God has given us
Look at this world: woman pastors, single parents…why because we as men did not step up
Look at the most recent shootings 9 out of 10 didn’t have a father in the picture
Verse 12: Death spread to all men, because all sinned
Death, like a disease, spread through out the whole world...
Verse 13:
Because all have sinned
Verse 14:
We inherited a sin nature from Adam...
Questions or Comments?
Therefore, humans are not sinners because they sin....

Text Reading:

John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
But rather they sin because they are sinners
Verse 15: For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Verse 16:
By one man, Adam, many will die...
But by Jesus many will live
The “much more” that Paul uses is in reference to the fact that Christ’s one act of redemption was immeasurably greater than Adam’s one act of condemnation
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
Verse 17: For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Like the popular hymn, “Oh death, where is your sting”
Death is no longer King for the King of Kings defeated death
Just like death reigned due to Adam...
Righteousness will reign now because of Jesus

Verse 18: So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Jesus’ one act of righteousness...
His obedience completely to the Father’s will...
Gave justification to all who trust in Him
Does the “all” mean that all will be saved?
Does this verse advocate universalism as some claim?
No...
Paul makes it plain in this context that only those who “receive” in verse 17
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2166.
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2166.
Verse 15 says the grace of God will abound in “many”...
And the following verse 19, “many” will be made righteous
The wording “as” and “so” shows that Paul’s focus is not on the number in each group...
But on the method of either sin or righteousness being passed from the representative leader to the whole group...
So, the first “all men” refers to all who are in Adam which is every human being...
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2166.
While the second “all men” refers to all believers, to all who are “in Christ”
Additionally, Paul is using “all” with two different meanings for the sake of parallelism...
This was a common practice in the Old Testament Hebrew
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
Verse 19: For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Paul’s use of the wording “made righteous” again proves that we where not righteous of ourselves
He made us righteous
Hallelujah and Amen!
Verse 20: But where sin increased, grace abounded all the more
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Your invoice...
Your bill...
Your debt...
What you owe God is in fact huge and unimaginable...
Imagine being in trillions of dollars in debt with no option to file for bankruptcy...
But the debt you owe is not greater than the riches God has
His grace is greater than your sin
God’s grace was greater than the murder committed by Moses
God’s grace was greater than the lies and deceit of Jacob
God’s grace was greater than the cowardice of Gideon
God’s grace was greater than the murder and adultery commited by David
God’s grace was greater than the 3 time denial of Peter
And God’s grace was greater than the sins committed by the author of this very letter and 70% on the New Testamnet...
A zealous religious terrorist...
A 1st century type of Osama Bin Laden...
The Chief of Sinner....
Verse 21: as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Paul
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
So if you haven't already, surrender it all to Him....
The only one that can pay your debt and free you from the chains of sin
