Text Reading:
Verse 1: Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Who are we?
We are selfish, sinners, desiring our own desires
This is high treason to our Holy and Just God
We are His enemies
We are lawless criminals
We are at war with the Almighty God and we are deserving of the full wrath of God
So, how does one find peace with God?
We must be justified
We must pay for our sinful behavior
Justification is a one-time legal declaration with continuing results, not an ongoing process
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible.
(Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
How is one become justified?
By faith in Jesus as both Lord and Savior
Faith in the completed work of Christ
That He took on the wrath of God in our place
The result of justification is that the sinner’s war with God is ended forever
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible.
(Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
Verse 2: Obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand
You d
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
This refers to the believer’s access to God through Jesus Christ
What was unthinkable to the OT Jew
The term “stand” refers to the permanent, secure position believers enjoy in God’s grace
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible.

Verse 3: Exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Praise God for our troubles and tribulation
This is so counterintuitive
Remember the apostles as they left prison, they praised God
Remember Paul: had authority questioned, shipwrecked (3 times), beaten nearly to death, imprisoned, bitten by a poisonous snake...
Always praised God and counted it all joy
John Wesley
Why is tribulation and persecution a desirable state for the believer?
It brings about perseverance
Remember?
How does an egg become a boiled egg?
How does dough become bread?
How does lump of clay become a bowel?
How does coal become a diamond?
Without heat none of these things would be possible
God is molding you to be more Christlike...
And this will require so heat...
This will require some pressure
So, praise God for all the troubles, tribulations and persecution in your life
Verse 4-5: Perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint
5 and hope does not disappoint
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Tribulation brings about perserverance
Perseverance will prove our character
Who are we proving ourselves to?
Not to God, He already knows who we are
We are proving ourselves to us
Once we see what God can do using us we are amazed
Look what God did with a stuttering, on the run murder like Moses
Look what God did with a liar and deceiver like Jacob
Look what God did with a murder and adulterer like David
Look what God did with a coward like Gideon
Look what God did with a terrorist like Paul
Look what God did with a murder and adulterer like David
Look what God did with a denier like Peter
Look what God did with a zealous terrorist like Paul
So we have to ask ourselves, What is God doing with us?
This gives us hope
For if God can use the broken to do great things, what really could ever be the limits to His wonder
Verse 5: The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
We experience God’s love through the power of the Holy Spirit
God’s love for us has been lavishly poured out to the point of overflowing
This is a great spiritual check list item if you are concerned whether you are saved or not...
The reality is that God has implanted within our hearts evidence that we belong to Him...

(Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
In that we love the One who first loved us
