Intro: There are a lot of arguments, conflicts, and even wars over who has the authority. The person with the authority has the right to give orders, make decisions and enforce obedience. When someone does not like the person who has authority over them they may look to take away that authority. When there is an amicable relationship between the subject and the one who has authority the dynamics may build to be a mutual relationship.
Be careful that you are not power hungry and you want to sit in the chair because of simple power. Some people want to be in a position of authority because they like the ring to the title. The problem will be that you will not have any subjects because your character is not attractive. Jesus shows us attractive Authority.
Jesus is one of power that leads with humility and compassion. He does not Lord over his subjects but loves over his subjects. This great characteristic of Jesus is the example of true servant leadership. The master of all becomes the servant of all. This attitude makes it easier to come with a humble heart into the presence of the all powerful God.
We will look at the power of Jesus and his attitude of humility along with another person of authority and understanding of power. We will also look to see what this faith in Jesus power looks like and how we will benefit from having this faith in Jesus.
AIM: Learn to trust Jesus authority over my life and humbly serve his will.

The text tells us Jesus returns to Capernaum. This fact points out that Jesus has frequent this location. The respond that Jesus is familiar with this location is this is where Simon lives. Simon’s house in Capernaum is mention in the gospels. This is also the location of many of the gospels recorded miracles. Capernaum is in Galilee. This also speaks to why Jesus is well known because of his presence there and the work of his amazing ministry.
Capernaum is where Simon’s house. This is also the location of many of the gospels recorded miracles. Capernaum is in Galilee.
5 When Jesus returned to Capernaum, a Roman officer came and pleaded with him, 6 “Lord, my young servant lies in bed, paralyzed and in terrible pain.”
Matthew 8:5-
Come to the Lord
Come to the Lord
We should always seek the Lord in every aspect of our lives. The knowledge of the power of Jesus leads the Roman officer to Jesus.
Come with humility
Come with humility
This officer who has authority over the people who can order all around. Roman soldiers have the legal right to press people into labor. This was shown in Marks gospel when the soldier pressed Simon into carrying the cross of Jesus. But this soldier comes with humility...
Matthew 5:8
8 But the officer said, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. 9 I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”
Matthew 8:8
When we come to Jesus he hears us.
When we come to Jesus he hears us.
7 Jesus said, “I will come and heal him.”
What a blessing to know the Lord hears our cries. We love the Lord because he answers us when we call him.
1 I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy.
Psalm 116
2 Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!
We are to come to Jesus in faith.
We are to come to Jesus in faith.
6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
9 And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived there by faith—for he was like a foreigner, living in tents. And so did Isaac and Jacob, who inherited the same promise.
We come with faith to God the Father.
Believe that he is Lord and God alone.
Know that God is able to do all things.
Know the Lord is mighty to save.
Know Jesus is the son of God.
Therefore has the same power of God.
Jesus is the source of our salvation.
The soldier came with this kind of faith.

Know the Lord is Good.
Know the Lord’s will is good and his love endures forever.
Knowing the Son of God gave his life for you, what will he withhold from you.

8 But the officer said, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. 9 I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. He is holy and we are not.
He is holy and we are not.
Our God is holy and we are not.
Our God is worthy of all the praise and we are not.
Trust God because he is holy and just.
Trust God because he is holy and just.
Our faith in the goodness of God moves us to trust God. Trust God is easy because of his great love toward us. The Roman officer was able to lean on the compassion of Christ because he did not feel worthy to have Jesus as his house guest.
Great example of Faith.
Great example of Faith.
He also shows amazing faith in not needing Jesus to come to his house.
9 I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”
Matthew 8:9
He shows the deference for authority.
He trust the command to be carried out.
He shows his power of a command that leads to the affirmative result.
This man shows us how we should trust God. We are to carry out his word in our lives and know that God will work it out for his good which is for our good. The commands he gives us are always good to accomplish his good will. God’s word brings life. Obeying the word of the Lord leads to peace in our relationship with him.
There is judgement for lack of faith.
There is judgement for lack of faith.
10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to those who were following him, he said, “I tell you the truth, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel! 11 And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world—from east and west—and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven. 12 But many Israelites—those for whom the Kingdom was prepared—will be thrown into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Jesus teaches us the faithful will be welcome into the kingod.
11 And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world—from east and west—and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven.
The Gentiles will be welcome to the great banquet.
The Israelites who are not faithful will be judged.
12 But many Israelites—those for whom the Kingdom was prepared—will be thrown into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

The Roman soldiers’ faith in the Lord was rewarded. His faith in the power of Jesus was demonstrated in his life. Jesus could have gone to the house to perform the miracle. However, Jesus did as the soldier requested and said the word. “And the young servant was healed that same hour” ().
Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus. The Soldier not a Jew comes to Jesus trusting he is mighty to save. He believed in the power of Word of Jesus. His faith saw salvation.
What we learn from the Roman soldier.
What we learn from the Roman soldier.

Jesus embraced the humility of the soldier.
The soldier interceded on his servant’s behalf.
How good it is for people to seek God on your behalf.
To know that God is good and able to do as his good will sees.
Faith in God’s authority
Faith in God’s authority
Have faith in the authority of the Lord. This word authority is defined as power to do something; or a state of control over something. Jesus has power and control over all of creation. The power of the word of God is able to change anything. Let the word of God into your life. You know you are not worthy, but you can still welcome the word into your home. Right now before you go home take some time and ask God to speak over your life.
“Lord bless my home this very hour. Be with the sick and heal them. Lord comfort the bereaved and broken hearted with your unfailing Love” Is there anybody here who knows about he power of the Lord. Call on him and seek his face.
