John 15:8 NIV84
This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
Everything should be for the glory of God. Being fruitful brings glory to God because it is His desire and will for us to produce fruit.
Fruit is the result of obedient faith. Jesus is telling His disciples that in their ministry and life they are remaining in fellowship with Jesus.
What kind of fruit should they bear? MUCH fruit.
There is a difference between bearing fruit and bearing much fruit. We don’t need to do enough to just get by— we need to do more. Jesus gave His all so what should we do? We should give our all.
What is the fruit?
Galatians 5:22–23 NIV84
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
“…showing yourselves to be my disciples.” We don’t need to be secret Christians. We are called to be and do. We can be assured that we are and will be equipped to do so.
J. C. Ryle said, “True grace is never idle.” In other words, when we receive grace, it should be so real to us that we have to share it with others and it never stays in one place.
John 15:9 NIV84
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.
Throughout John’s Gospel, the relationship between the Father and the Son is an example for the relationship between Jesus and the disciples.
The phrase, “has loved me,” is from the Greek word egapeson and it shows the completion and perfection of the Father’s love for His Son since before time began.
Jesus uses the same phrase to show His love for His disciples as completed thing.
“Remain in my love” once again indicates obedience.
1 Peter 1:8 NIV84
Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
What does “remaining in the love of Jesus” look like?
John 15:10 NIV84
If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
Obedience to the Father’s commands is the same for us as it was for the Son of God.
John 14:15 NIV84
“If you love me, you will obey what I command.
John 14:21 NIV84
Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.”
John 14:23 NIV84
Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
1 John
1 John 2:3 NIV84
We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.
John 3:
John 3:22 NIV84
After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.
John 14:23
John 14:23 NIV84
Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

1 John
1 John 3:22 NIV84
and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him.
1 John
1 John 3:24 NIV84
Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.
1 John 5:3
1 John 5:3 NIV84
This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,
Even when Jesus bore the weight of the sin of the world, He remained in the Father’s love.
Psalm 89:33
Psalm 89:33 NIV84
but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
He obediently endured.
Isaiah 42:1-
Isaiah 42:1–4 NIV84
“Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope.”
Jesus did not falter or was He discouraged.
John 15:11 NIV84
I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
Jesus has promised peace.
John 14:27 NIV84
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Jesus insists on remaining in His love:
John 15:10 NIV84
If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
Now He promises JOY (chara).
It is part of the fruit of the Spirit!
1 John
1 John 1:4 NIV84
We write this to make our joy complete.
What does joy do?
Joy helps believers endure trials and suffering. Remember, Jesus said we would would have it and not be free from it!
1 Thessalonians 1:6 NIV84

being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully
Philippians 1:25 NIV84
Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
Why is this repeated again?
It is tied back to
John 13:34–35 NIV84
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Do you love like you are loved?
Ephesians 1:6 NIV84
to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.
John 15:13 NIV84
Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
What are some characteristics of a friend?
The word here is philos. Ever seen that before? It indicates an inner circle.
Love is not a feeling, it is an act of will. The proof of our love is not our feelings, but our actions.
1 John 3:16 NIV84
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
