Today we are looking at what marks the beginning of the ministry of Jesus. His baptism, where not do we only see the oddity of the baptism of the sinless one, but we see the manifestation of the trinity.

The early Christians were a little embarrassed about this for two reasons; (1) They thought that this showed Jesus’ need for repentance and forgiveness, (2) Some thought this showed that Jesus was subordinate to John.

When we look back in v.3 at the baptism of John, this is a baptism of repentance. Did Jesus need to repent? Say no
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
John states that Jesus is the lamb that takes away the sin of the world.

v.16 John says I am not worthy to untie his sandal.
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
John insists that he needs to be baptized by Jesus not the other way around
But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.

Jesus came for two reasons:
1) To be our sin-bearer
1) To be our sin-bearer
this is why He is called the lamb of God.
He came to be the perfect sacrifice for us.
2) He came to make us righteous
2) He came to make us righteous
We not only need our sin taken away, but we need to be righteous.

Our response
We should also be baptized
To mirror our Lord and Savior, as well as identify with Him.
We need to recognize the source of righteousness.
We cannot rely on our righteous actions to get into heaven, they aren’t enough.
Lead us away from christian snobbery.

God is one in essence, three in person
We see all three persons of the godhead here.
The Son being baptised, the Holy Spirit descending and the Father speaking
This is one of the most difficult doctrines in Christianity but one that is foundational.
God is one divine being, his constitutional nature/ essence is one.
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
However, in this divine being there are three person’s or individual substance's.
I and the Father are one.”
And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me.
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Systematic Theology 3. Statement of the Doctrine of the Trinity
It is intelligible in some of its relations and modes of manifestation, but unintelligible in its essential nature.
The Trinity is a mystery. One that does not violate the laws of contradiction but it is one that our finite minds cannot understand. However when we look at scripture the trinity is clear.
The church has never tried to explain the mystery of the Trinity, but only sought to formulate the doctrine of the Trinity in such a manner that the errors which endangered it were warded off.

How we all desire to hear these words, to hear God say to us that He is well pleased.
And the Lord said, “Call his name Not My People, for you are not my people, and I am not your God.” Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. And in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, “Children of the living God.”
The people of Israel continually fall into whoredom. For this is how God sees it when we fall into sin, when we leave Him for our own passions and desires.
It wasn’t until the baptism of Jesus that we hear God say, now I am well pleased. Now I am proud of you.
Why? Because Jesus is fulfilling all righteousness. He isn’t living for His will but for the will of God.
How do we please God? We know that there is none righteous, we know that our deeds are as filthy rags where we have nothing to stand on in ourselves.
