They went each to his own house, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
Human Sinfulness

It is the glory of God not honored.
The holiness of God not reverenced.
The greatness of God not admired.
The power of God not praised.
The truth of God not sought.
The wisdom of God not esteemed.
The beauty of God not treasured.
The goodness of God not savored.
The faithfulness of God not trusted.
The commandments of God not obeyed.
The justice of God not respected.
The wrath of God not feared.
The grace of God not cherished.
The presence of God not prized.
The person of God not loved.
That is sin.”

Seeks selfish agendas
-The Pharisees had no respect or interest in the law or Moses. They had failed to live by this particular law for years. In fact under Roman law, the Jews could not put someone to death.
-The Pharisees were shrewd. They knew they had a way to condemn Jesus no matter how he responded. If Jesus says to ignore the law of Moses, they could now bring him to trial for outright blasphemy and teaching against Moses. If Jesus says to stone her, they could bring him before the Romans for breaking Roman law and attempting to begin a rebellion.
b. Elevates the sins of others
Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?
c. Ignores personal sin

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
2. The Response of Jesus

3. A Need for Continual Self-Evaluation
a. Repent of personal sinfulness
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
b. Guard against sinful attitudes

The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
c. Practice forgiveness
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.
d. Point people to God, not simply behavior modification
