Intro:

TS: Today, we continue to examine Jesus’ role and superiority as High priest.

Qualifications for Priesthood

Hebrews 5:1–4 ESV
For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

Able to Sympathize

Chosen from among men

High priests in the Levitical system was by appointment only. Nobody could elevate themselves to that level.
They were chosen and appointed from among fellow humans

Acts on behalf of Others

Offers gifts and sacrifices
Serves to lead worship
Offers up all of the various sacrifices required on behalf of others
Under the law:
we would bring our offerings and the priests would offer them.

Ministers to Others

deals gently-
kind, patient and compassionate
No room for hash treatment, no room for arrogance.
This is because of their own humanity
they are frail as well.
Every sacrifice reminded them of their own sin.

Called of God

God called them into service
1 Samuel 16:1–3 ESV
The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.”
AP: As Priests, we have the same qualificaitons:

We are called by God

God called us to salvation and service
The Bible often uses the term, “chosen” for us.
Ephesians 1:3–5 ESV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,
Ephesians 1:1–5 ESV
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,
Ephesians 4:1–5 ESV
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
John 6:44 ESV
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
John 6:
Romans 8:28–29 ESV
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

We can sympathize

We are humans
We struggle with sin
We grow tired
We are ill
God uses fallible and frail humans to share His love and message to the world
We can relate
We needed rescue
We found help
Now we can share that good news with others.

Christ’s Eternal Priesthood

Hebrews 5:5–10 ESV
So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
He meets all of the qualifications and will endure forever.
He meets all of the qualifications and will endure forever.
He meets all of the qualifications and will endure forever.
Sympathizes with us
He took on flesh so He knows our weakness
The miracle of the incarnation was necessary not just to die for our sins, he also needed to take on flesh to fully be able to identify with humanity.
Remember
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
He doesn’t know what it is to sin, but He knows the price it takes to pay for sin!
Heb 4
He knows all other things about the human experience
He knows what we go through
Appointed by God
God the Father assigned/appointed Him as priest forever.
In role, He submitted to God the Father
His priesthood is valid because God appointed Him to be priest.
He isn’t a Levitical priest since Jesus is of the tribe of Judah, not Levi.
Levitical priesthood is hereditary
He is a priest of the order of Melchizadeck
Hebrews 7:1–3 ESV
For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.
King and priest of Salem during Abraham’s life
King and priest of Salem during Abraham’s life
gen 14:18-20
Genesis 14:18–20 ESV
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
unknown origin and parentage
uknown origin and parentage
more accurate translation is “whose father and mother are not written in the genealogies.”
we don’t know who they are, not that he didn’t have parents.
No record of birth and death.
Pre mosaic law, so not under Levitical requirements.
the lack of information serves to make him a picture of Jesus (not Jesus Himself).
universal priesthood
royal priesthood
Zechariah 6:13 ESV
It is he who shall build the temple of the Lord and shall bear royal honor, and shall sit and rule on his throne. And there shall be a priest on his throne, and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.” ’
righteous
Psalm 72:2 ESV
May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice!
peaceful
Psalm 72:7 ESV
In his days may the righteous flourish, and peace abound, till the moon be no more!
unending
Hebrews 7:3 ESV
He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.

Conclusion:

Jesus is our priest and will be forever. We need no other.
