This is the chapter right after , considered one of the most important chapters in the Bible
We had to divide the chapter into two parts
And , which is considered one of the most controversial chapter
actually contains my personal favorite verse and what is considered that one verse that perfectly sums up the requirements for salvation
Opening Prayer
Opening Prayer
Before we dive into the text...Please join me one more time in prayer before we start

Reading:
Verse 1: Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation
Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation.
What’s your heart’s desire
Think about it...
What comes up in your mind when you think about it?
Paul’s desire...
Was for the salvation of others (specifically here, His fellow Jewish brothers and sisters)
Our heart’s desire
This was included in his daily prayers
When we pray...
Is it a laundry list of request for God to grant our wishes?
Are we treating God like a genie in a lamp?
If we are praying in His will...
We are praying for the lost to be found
We are praying for the salvation of others
Verse 2: For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God
Paul points out that his Jewish brother and sisters do in fact have a zeal for God
This zeal was seen in the Pharisees
They loved the law so much they started making their own laws
But what they really did was diminish God’s standard...
And focused on their own traditions which where actually less demanding than God’s law
They also where passionate to confront what they believed to be heresy
Even putting their opponents to death like what they did to Jesus and future Christian martyrs
Verse 2: But not in accordance with knowledge
Despite their zeal...
Despite their passion for the Law...
They missed the whole point of the Law
They lacked the true knowledge of God that was revealed in Scripture
Verse 3: For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own
They lacked the essential knowledge of God’s righteousness...
Which is God’s holiness
Which is also lacking in many churches today
They also lacked the essential knowledge of their own unrighteousness...
Which is our Total Depravity
Which again is also lacking in many churches today
If you want to identify a false teacher they will focus on selfism
That is they demise God’s holiness and make us the center of attention
They make the Bible about us
They explain about the power we have over God
They also never or rarely talk about sin and our total depravity
These wolves are following the footsteps of the pharisees
These false teachers should be openly rebuked...
And at the same time they should be prayed for as Paul prayed for the Jews
Verse 3: They did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God
At the heart of the heart of the matter...
Jews and those following the teachings of false prophets...
Refuse to surrender to God’s righteousness...
T
They refuse to surrender to the holiness of God
Verse 4: For Christ is the end of the law
Christ is the end of the law
This is to convey that Christ is in fact...
The goal of the law or the fulfillment of the law
That is why the old covenant is done...
Verse 5: For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness
And we now have a new covenant
Since Christ is the goal and end of the law, righteousness belongs to all who trust in Christ
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2174.
Verse 4: For righteousness to everyone who believes
Since Christ is the goal and end of the law...

Righteousness belongs to all who trust in Christ

Verse 5: For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness
Paul is referring to , which reads
5 ‘So you shall keep My statutes and My judgments, by which a man may live if he does them; I am the Lord.
So, to have perfect obedience to the law...
It requires perfect conformity in every detail of the law
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
However, as Paul said in the beginning of this letter...
We know that no one other than Jesus has ever or will ever keep all the law
So, Paul then quotes in the next few verses, which reads
12 “It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?’
13 “Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?’
14 “But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may observe it.
Verse 6: But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: “DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, ‘WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN?’ (that is, to bring Christ down)
So, Paul is saying we do not need to travel to heaven to bring Christ down to earth
Why?
Since God already sent Jesus
Verse 7: Or ‘WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)”
Here, Paul is saying we also don’t need to somehow bring Christ back from the realm of the dead
Why?
Again, because God already raised Jesus from the dead
Verse 8: But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART,” That is, the word of faith which we are preaching
By contrast with all human efforts...
God has brought near the word of salvation...
R. C. Sproul, ed., The Reformation Study Bible: English Standard Version (2015 Edition) (Orlando, FL: Reformation Trust, 2015), 1998.
and with it salvation itself
In other words...
What God requires is not superhuman works...
But faith in the gospel that Paul is preaching
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2175.
Verse 8: That is, the word of faith which we are preaching
And then Paul sums up the essential gospel message with the following veres
The verses that are my personal favorite and the one of the most well know...
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
For simply explaining the requirements of being a genuine follower of Christ
Reading:
Reading:
Verse 9: That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord
There has to be a public confession...
Faith may be personal but it is in no way a private matter
Just look to
32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven.
33 “But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.
32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven.
Refusing to confess Jesus openly will result in Him refusing to confess you to His Father
Verse 9: And believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead
Note that the believing the resurrection is essential for salvation
Why?
The resurrection proves that The Father accepted Jesus’ work on the cross
This is what separates the demons from believers
This verse also is what separates the demons from believers
Look at
19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
20 But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?
19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
Believing in your heart is more that calling Jesus Lord...
It is treating Jesus as Lord...
It is living like Jesus is Lord...
That means your new life in Christ must result in producing good works...
Or your faith is not genuine
So you need more than a head knowledge...
You need to believe it in your heart...
You need to trust and obey Him...
You need to completely surrender to Him
In other words...
It is not just a simple acknowledgment that Jesus is God and the Lord of the universe...
since even demons acknowledge that to be true (). This is the deep personal conviction, without reservation, that Jesus is that person’s own master or sovereign. This phrase includes repenting from sin, trusting in Jesus for salvation, and submitting to Him as Lord
As we said, since even demons acknowledge that to be true...
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
This is the deep personal conviction, without reservation, that Jesus is that person’s own master...
This phrase includes repenting from sin, trusting in Jesus for salvation, and submitting to Him as Lord
Verse 9: You will be saved
If you do these things...
You have a promise from God...
You will be saved
Verse 10: For with the heart a person believes
Genuine belief comes from the heart
Verse 10: Resulting in righteousness
This act will result in righteousness...
That is the righteousness of Christ...
Imputed on us
That is we will be counted as justified
Verse 10: And with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation
When one believes...
They will confess with their mouth...
This is what leads to salvation
This is a parallelism...
Paul reverses the order of verbs in verses 9 and 10...
R. C. Sproul, ed., The Reformation Study Bible: English Standard Version (2015 Edition) (Orlando, FL: Reformation Trust, 2015), 1998.
This indicates that heart-belief and mouth-confession belong together for justification (or righteousness) and salvation
Verse 11: For the Scripture says, “WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED”
This is a quote from and the second time Paul uses this Old Testament reference
Paul also used this quote in
This emphasize that trusting in Christ and not works-righteousness is the true pathway to salvation
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2175.
Verse 12: For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him
There is no difference between Jew or Gentile...
The path to salvation is the same...
The requirements to be saved are the same for all...
An has been the same even in the Old Testament....
It has always been by faith alone through Christ alone
Verse 13: For “WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED”
The whoever are the elect in whom God has choosen
Those whoever are made up of both Jews and Gentiles

Verse 14: How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed?
With this question, Paul starts with a series of rhetorical questions...
Paul considers the chain of events necessary for a person to be saved
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2175.
First, people will call on Jesus to save them only if they believe he can do so
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2175.
Verse 14: How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard?
Next, belief in Christ cannot exist without knowledge about him;
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2175.
Verse 14: And how will they hear without a preacher?
Then, one hears about Christ only when someone proclaims the saving message
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2175.
Verse 15: How will they preach unless they are sent?
Finally, the message about Christ will not be proclaimed unless someone is sent by God to do so
That is why Paul was so urgent about spreading the gospel to the ends of the earth
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2175.
For he believed that the only way to be saved was to hear and believe in the gospel
This is why it is essential to preach the gospel every time we preach
Verse 15: Just as it is written, “HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!”
This is quoting
So, since salvation comes only from hearing the gospel...
The feet of those who bring the message about Christ are beautiful...
Because the feet carry the messengers to their destinations to preach the Word of God
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2175.

Verse 16: However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, “LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?”
This is a quote of
Unfortunately, not all will accept the good news brought to them
Also note that this is from ...
The chapter in which he the substitutionary death of Christ is the “report” being declared
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
Verse 17: So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ
So Paul sums it up that faith comes from hearing the Word of God
Verse 18: But I say, surely they have never heard, have they?
But unfortunately, many will not listen
Verse 18: Indeed they have; “THEIR VOICE HAS GONE OUT INTO ALL THE EARTH, AND THEIR WORDS TO THE ENDS OF THE WORLD”
“THEIR VOICE HAS GONE OUT INTO ALL THE EARTH,
So, although the Jews had the Old Testament and they had access to which is quoted here...
AND THEIR WORDS TO THE ENDS OF THE WORLD.”
Which is quoted here, they should have understood that the
They should have understood the good news would go out to all the nations
Verse 19: But I say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First Moses says, “I WILL MAKE YOU JEALOUS BY THAT WHICH IS NOT A NATION, BY A NATION WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING WILL I ANGER YOU”
“I WILL MAKE YOU JEALOUS BY THAT WHICH IS NOT A NATION,
Paul quotes here that shows...
BY A NATION WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING WILL I ANGER YOU.”
Isreal should have know that the gentiles would also believe
Verse 20: And Isaiah is very bold and says, “I WAS FOUND BY THOSE WHO DID NOT SEEK ME, I BECAME MANIFEST TO THOSE WHO DID NOT ASK FOR ME”
“I WAS FOUND BY THOSE WHO DID NOT SEEK ME,
Paul then quotes which is another clear verse that shows that gentiles would find God
I BECAME MANIFEST TO THOSE WHO DID NOT ASK FOR ME.”
So this should not have been a shocker for them
In fact, it should have validated all these prophesies
Verse 21: But as for Israel He says, “ALL THE DAY LONG I HAVE STRETCHED OUT MY HANDS TO A DISOBEDIENT AND OBSTINATE PEOPLE”
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
However, Isreal will be foolish and reject God and they will be without excuse
