Background on
Please turn your Bibles to
This is the chapter right after , considered one of the most important chapters in the Bible
We had to divide the chapter into two parts
And , which is considered one of the most controversial chapter
actually contains my personal favorite verse and what is considered that one verse that perfectly sums up the requirements for salvation
Opening Prayer
Before we dive into the text...Please join me one more time in prayer before we start
Reading:
Verse 1: Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation
Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation.
What’s your heart’s desire
Think about it...
What comes up in your mind when you think about it?
Paul’s desire...
Was for the salvation of others (specifically here, His fellow Jewish brothers and sisters)
Our heart’s desire
This was included in his daily prayers
When we pray...
Is it a laundry list of request for God to grant our wishes?
Are we treating God like a genie in a lamp?
If we are praying in His will...
We are praying for the lost to be found
We are praying for the salvation of others
Verse 2: For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God
Paul points out that his Jewish brother and sisters do in fact have a zeal for God
This zeal was seen in the Pharisees
They loved the law so much they started making their own laws
But what they really did was diminish God’s standard...
And focused on their own traditions which where actually less demanding than God’s law
They also where passionate to confront what they believed to be heresy
Even putting their opponents to death like what they did to Jesus and future Christian martyrs
Verse 2: But not in accordance with knowledge
Despite their zeal...
Despite their passion for the Law...
They missed the whole point of the Law
They lacked the true knowledge of God that was revealed in Scripture
Verse 3: For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own
They lacked the essential knowledge of God’s righteousness...
Which is God’s holiness
Which is also lacking in many churches today
They also lacked the essential knowledge of their own unrighteousness...
Which is our Total Depravity
Which again is also lacking in many churches today
If you want to identify a false teacher they will focus on selfism
That is they demise God’s holiness and make us the center of attention
They make the Bible about us
They explain about the power we have over God
They also never or rarely talk about sin and our total depravity
These wolves are following the footsteps of the pharisees
These false teachers should be openly rebuked...
And at the same time they should be prayed for as Paul prayed for the Jews
Verse 3: They did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God
At the heart of the heart of the matter...
Jews and those following the teachings of false prophets...
Refuse to surrender to God’s righteousness...
T
They refuse to surrender to the holiness of God
Verse 4: For Christ is the end of the law
Christ is the end of the law
This is to convey that Christ is in fact...
The goal of the law or the fulfillment of the law
That is why the old covenant is done...
Verse 5: For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness
And we now have a new covenant
Since Christ is the goal and end of the law, righteousness belongs to all who trust in Christ
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2174.
Verse 4: For righteousness to everyone who believes
Since Christ is the goal and end of the law...
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Righteousness belongs to all who trust in Christ

Verse 5: For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness
Paul is referring to , which reads
So, to have perfect obedience to the law...
It requires perfect conformity in every detail of the law
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible.
(Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
However, as Paul said in the beginning of this letter...
We know that no one other than Jesus has ever or will ever keep all the law
So, Paul then quotes in the next few verses, which reads
Verse 6: But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: “DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, ‘WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN?’ (that is, to bring Christ down)
So, Paul is saying we do not need to travel to heaven to bring Christ down to earth
Why?
Since God already sent Jesus
Verse 7: Or ‘WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)”
Here, Paul is saying we also don’t need to somehow bring Christ back from the realm of the dead
Why?
Again, because God already raised Jesus from the dead
Verse 8: But what does it say?
“THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART,” That is, the word of faith which we are preaching
By contrast with all human efforts...
God has brought near the word of salvation...
R. C. Sproul, ed., The Reformation Study Bible: English Standard Version (2015 Edition) (Orlando, FL: Reformation Trust, 2015), 1998.
and with it salvation itself
In other words...
What God requires is not superhuman works...
But faith in the gospel that Paul is preaching
