Good Evening Church
Please turn your Bibles to Matthew chapter 6
We will be focusing our study tonight on verses 9-13
Today’s message will be about prayer...
Specifically about the model of prayer Jesus gave us
Many call this The Lord's Prayer or the Model Prayer...
This is Jesus' own pattern for how we should approach the Almighty Father

A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city...
Because he was short of time and couldn’t find a space with a meter
A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn’t find a space with a meter. So he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: “I have circled the block ten times. If I don’t park here, I’ll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses.”
So he put a note under the windshield wiper that read:
“I have circled the block ten times. If I don’t park here, I’ll miss my appointment...
Forgive us our trespasses.”
When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note:
“I’ve circled this block for ten years. If I don’t give you a ticket, I’ll lose my job...
Lead us not into temptation.”
So, again, today we will be studying the text found in which reads...

9 “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
10 ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.
11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread.
12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’
Background on Prayer
Background on Prayer
Prayer is essential in a believers life...
As it is our time of having a personal audience with the God of the universe
We see prayer as a foundational aspect for many in Scripture
Example of Moses praying for God to turn His anger away from Isreal in
9 The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, they are an obstinate people.
10 “Now then let Me alone, that My anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them; and I will make of you a great nation.”
11 Then Moses entreated the Lord his God, and said, “O Lord, why does Your anger burn against Your people whom You have brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?
12 “Why should the Egyptians speak, saying, ‘With evil intent He brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your burning anger and change Your mind about doing harm to Your people.
13 “Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants to whom You swore by Yourself, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ”
14 So the Lord changed His mind about the harm which He said He would do to His people.
Example of David praying for repentance and pardon in
For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.
1 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.
4 Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
6 Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.
7 Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice.
9 Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit.
13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise.
16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
18 By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar.
Example of Nehemiah praying for success and God’s will in his life is
5 I said, “I beseech You, O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who preserves the covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments,
6 let Your ear now be attentive and Your eyes open to hear the prayer of Your servant which I am praying before You now, day and night, on behalf of the sons of Israel Your servants, confessing the sins of the sons of Israel which we have sinned against You; I and my father’s house have sinned.
7 “We have acted very corruptly against You and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances which You commanded Your servant Moses.
8 “Remember the word which You commanded Your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful I will scatter you among the peoples;
9 but if you return to Me and keep My commandments and do them, though those of you who have been scattered were in the most remote part of the heavens, I will gather them from there and will bring them to the place where I have chosen to cause My name to dwell.’
10 “They are Your servants and Your people whom You redeemed by Your great power and by Your strong hand.
11 “O Lord, I beseech You, may Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant and the prayer of Your servants who delight to revere Your name, and make Your servant successful today and grant him compassion before this man.” Now I was the cupbearer to the king.
1 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now it happened in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, while I was in Susa the capitol,
2 that Hanani, one of my brothers, and some men from Judah came; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped and had survived the captivity, and about Jerusalem.
3 They said to me, “The remnant there in the province who survived the captivity are in great distress and reproach, and the wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates are burned with fire.”
4 When I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
8 “Remember the word which You commanded Your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful I will scatter you among the peoples;
1 And it came about in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, that wine was before him, and I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence.
2 So the king said to me, “Why is your face sad though you are not sick? This is nothing but sadness of heart.” Then I was very much afraid.
3 I said to the king, “Let the king live forever. Why should my face not be sad when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies desolate and its gates have been consumed by fire?”
4 Then the king said to me, “What would you request?” So I prayed to the God of heaven.
5 I said to the king, “If it please the king, and if your servant has found favor before you, send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may rebuild it.”
6 Then the king said to me, the queen sitting beside him, “How long will your journey be, and when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me, and I gave him a definite time.
7 And I said to the king, “If it please the king, let letters be given me for the governors of the provinces beyond the River, that they may allow me to pass through until I come to Judah,
8 and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress which is by the temple, for the wall of the city and for the house to which I will go.” And the king granted them to me because the good hand of my God was on me.
9 Then I came to the governors of the provinces beyond the River and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent with me officers of the army and horsemen.
Example of Jesus praying for the Father to take away the cup of suffering but ultimately praying to do the Father’s will in
39 And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him.
40 When He arrived at the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray,
42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
43 Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.
44 And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.
45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow,
46 and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
Example of Paul praying for comfort for the church in Corinth in
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
4 who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
5 For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.
6 But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is effective in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer;
7 and our hope for you is firmly grounded, knowing that as you are sharers of our sufferings, so also you are sharers of our comfort.
These are all great examples of prayer
Yet prayer is not a part of your life...
Then you have re-examine your status with God...
So, how do we pray like that?
If you don’t care to speak to God it...
How are we as Christians supposed to pray?
If you don’t seek His advice in your life...
If you have other priorities and are too busy...
Then their is no relationship with God
Jesus answers this question...
Then their is no relationship between you and God
A question the disciples also had as seen in
1 It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.”
And Jesus answers this with a model for prayer
Prayer as a Model
Prayer as a Model
Verse 9: Pray, then, in this way
The prayer Jesus says here is a model...
Not merely a liturgy
It is notable for its brevity, simplicity, and comprehensiveness
Jesus provides a model for prayer as many pray with meaningless repetition and act like a hypocrites as seen in
5 “When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
6 “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.
8 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.
8 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
8 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
This also indicates that this prayer is not meant to be repeated word for word all the time as some do
What Jesus is about to share is a template or guide to prayer
Jesus is telling us what should make up our personal prayers
Of the 6 petitions made...
3 are directed to God in verses 9 and 10...
And 3 are directed toward human needs in verses 11, 12 and 13
To help us remember the points Jesus reveals to us should accompany our prayers...
I divided this template into 10 points
1. Address the Father
2. Acknowledge His Holiness
2,
3. Advancing His Kingdom
4. Ask for His Will
5. As in Heaven
6. Assurance for our Needs
7. Appeal for Forgivness
8. Always Forgive Others
9. Avoiding Temptations
10. Accompanying Us
1) Address the Father
1) Address the Father
Verse 9: Our Father who is in heaven
Closing Illustration
Closing Illustration
Let us be very intentional in our prayers...
We are to pray directly to the Father and ask all things in the name of Jesus
Look at Jesus instructions throughout the gospels
This is
23 “In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you.
13 “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
16 “You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.
23 “In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you.
1 John 5:14-15
14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.
Referring to God the Father as being in heaven...
Reminds believers of God’s sovereign rule over all things
2) Acknowledge His Holiness
2) Acknowledge His Holiness
2) Acknowledge His Holiness
2) Acknowledge His Holiness
Verse 9: Hallowed be Your name
This, along with the first part of this verse is a recognition of God as Father and Lord
We must acknowledge God’s holiness
The concern of this first petition is that God’s name would be hallowed...
That God would be treated with the highest honor and set apart as holy
You see, the name in antiquity meant a good deal more than it does with us...
We use it for a personal designation, and that is about all...
But in antiquity the name was held to be bound up with the person in some way...
The name and the qualities associated with the name went together...
Thus in the opening of this Gospel we find that the baby was to be called Jesus...
For he would save his people from their sins...
The name and the activity went together
Just like we call a judge, “Your Honor”...
Or a government official, “Congressman, Congresswoman, Mr. President, etc”
Or simply when we refer to others a “Sir” or “Ma’am”
We need to refer to God using his various titles and names and honor Him when we address Him...
Focusing on His various attributes such as His: Love, Mercy, Sovereignty, Justice, etc.
Names of God (that point to different attributes of Him) include (but not limited to): Lord, Master, The Most High, The Everlasting God, Lord God Almighty, Jehovah, God of Power and Might, Yahweh, Elohim, Adonai, and the list goes on..
So, their are various ways to address God with reverence
Remember, the Jewish Scribes would break their writing utensils every time they wrote Yahweh
This is the kind of attitude we need towards God’s Holiness
So, the intimacy Christians may have with their Heavenly Father...
Is balanced also with insistence on reverence in the clause “hallowed be your name”
So, “Name” refers to one’s person, character, and authority
All that God stands for should be treated as holy and honored because of his utter perfection and goodness
3) Advancing His Kingdom
3) Advancing His Kingdom
Verse 10: Your kingdom come
Christians are called to pray and work for the continual advance of God’s kingdom on earth...
This is the second petition
The presence of God’s kingdom in this age refers to the reign of Christ in the hearts and lives of believers...
And to the reigning presence of Christ in His body, the church
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 1831.
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 1831–1832.
So, they increasingly reflect His love, obey His laws, honor Him, do good for all people, and proclaim the good news of the kingdom
The third petition speaks of God’s will. This means God’s “revealed will” (see note on ), which involves conduct that is pleasing to him as revealed in Scripture. Just as God’s will is perfectly experienced in heaven, Jesus prays that it will be experienced on earth. The will of God will be expressed in its fullness only when God’s kingdom comes in its final form, when Christ returns in power and great glory (see ; cf. ; ), but it will increasingly be seen in this age as well ().
The prayer looks for God to take action...
Who else but the hands and feet of Christ...
His Body...
Not for worshipers to bring the kingdom into being...
Will advance the Kingdom through His power
The prayer looks for the full realization of all that the kingdom means
And for the will of God to be perfectly done
4) Ask for His Will
4) Ask for His Will
Verse 10: Your will be done
The third petition speaks of God’s will
All prayer...
First of all, willingly submits to...
God’s purposes, plans, and glory
This shows what should be our desire for God’s perfect will to be done
50 “For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.”
As Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane...
39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.”
The Father will always supersedes our own will
When we surrender to God...
Our desire is to do His desire...
God actually puts His desires on our heart...
5 Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
Our desire should be to be Christ-like
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
,
8 I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your Law is within my heart.”
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
5) As in Heaven
5) As in Heaven
Verse 10: On earth as it is in heaven
We must seek God’s rule on earth in the same manner that he reigns in heaven
In heaven, all follow God’s desires...
However on earth, God has allowed those who are rebellious to be tolerated
We must pray for the world to turn to God so as to obey like those in heaven
In heaven God’s will is perfectly done now...
For there is nothing in heaven to hinder it...
and the prayer looks for a similar state of affairs here on earth
So, This means just as God’s will is perfectly experienced in heaven...
We must pray that it will be experienced likewise on earth
Which involves conduct that is pleasing to him as revealed in Scripture.
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 1832.
The will of God will be expressed in its fullness only when God’s kingdom comes in its final form...
When Christ returns in power and great glory...
But it will increasingly be seen in this age as well
30 “And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
19 For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God.
20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope
21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.
23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.
24 For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees?
25 But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.
1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;
3 and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.
4 Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection.
6 Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years.
7 When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison,
8 and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore.
9 And they came up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, and fire came down from heaven and devoured them.
10 And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
31 He presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field;
32 and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”
33 He spoke another parable to them, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened.”
6) Assurance For Our Needs
6) Assurance For Our Needs
Verse 11: Give us this day our daily bread
The fourth petition focuses on a believer’s daily physical needs
We need to ask for physical provision from God
We must remember it is by God...
And not our own means...
That our needs are meet
We should never take this for granted...
And should thank God for providing...
Acknowledging that He is the source for this blessing
We should also be confident that He will always provide as is says...
31 “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’
32 “For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
The prayer encourages a continuing dependence on God...
It does not countenance a situation in which the believer asks God for a supply for a lengthy period...
After which prayer he can go on for some time in forgetfulness of God...
So, We must depend on God constantly...
And this dependence is expressed in this prayer
7) Appeal For Forgiveness
7) Appeal For Forgiveness
Verse 12: And forgive us our debts
This is the fifth petition
The parallel passage found in uses the Greek word for “sins”...
So, in that context, it is clear that spiritual debts is intended here
Even as born-again believers, we still have sin
Our flesh is still rules by sin and is in constant battle with our renewed mind
We need to be remorseful for our sin and always ask for forgiveness
Every time we sin, we are rebelling against God...
We are acting like we know better than God...
A regenerated believer will feel sorrow and remorse when they sin...
It is a detestable act that the believer does not have the desire to do...
But ends up falling into sin due to the weakness of the flesh
A heart that is not remorseful or disgusted by sin...
Is a big red flag that they have never been born again
So, this does not mean that believers need to ask daily for justification...
Since believers are justified forever from the moment of initial saving faith as Scripture clearly sates
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Rather, this is a prayer for the restoration of personal fellowship with God...
(, ; ; ). Rather, this is a prayer for the restoration of personal fellowship with God when fellowship has been hindered by sin
When fellowship has been hindered by sin
8) Always Forgive Others
8) Always Forgive Others
Verse 12: As we also have forgiven our debtors
As we ask for forgiveness of our rebellion against God...
We must forgive other of anything they have done to us
“Have forgiven” expresses more than a resolution for future action...
The person seeking forgiveness must first have taken forgiving action...
With respect to those who have sinned against him
There is nothing...
Including the most horrifying sin that can be commited against you...
That even comes close to the level of sin you commited against God
14 “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 “But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.
The reality is we are not victims in God’s eye...
We are guilty of death...
We are all criminals...
And it is only by His mercy that we come into right standing with Him
If your sins have been washed away by Jesus’ blood...
Then you can’t hold any sin over anybody else
Jesus makes this clear with His parable in
41 “A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
42 “When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?”
43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.”
44 Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
45 “You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet.
46 “You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume.
47 “For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.”
48 Then He said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.”
49 Those who were reclining at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this man who even forgives sins?”
50 And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
36 Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to dine with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.
37 And there was a woman in the city who was a sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume,
38 and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.
39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner.”
40 And Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he replied, “Say it, Teacher.”
21 Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.
23 “For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves.
24 “When he had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him.
25 “But since he did not have the means to repay, his lord commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made.
26 “So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.’
27 “And the lord of that slave felt compassion and released him and forgave him the debt.
28 “But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe.’
29 “So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you.’
30 “But he was unwilling and went and threw him in prison until he should pay back what was owed.
31 “So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their lord all that had happened.
32 “Then summoning him, his lord said to him, ‘You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.
33 ‘Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?’
34 “And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him.
35 “My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart.”
In addition, we must also remember...
The perfect example of Christ on the cross
34 But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.
9) Avoiding Temptations
9) Avoiding Temptations
Verse 13: And do not lead us into temptation
The final and sixth petition addresses a believer's battle with sin and evil
The meaning of temptation here...
Most likely carries the sense...
“Allow us to be spared from difficult circumstances...
That would tempt us to sin”
Or these words seem best taken as...
God does not tempt men (), but He will subject them to trials that may expose them to Satan’s assaults, as in the case of Job and Peter (, ). This petition reflects the believing one’s desire to avoid the dangers of sin altogether. God knows what one’s need is before one asks (v. 8), and He promises that no one will be subjected to testing beyond what can be endured. He also promises a way of escape—often through endurance (). But still, the proper attitude for the believer is the one expressed in this petition.
“Don’t let us succumb to temptation”...
Or “don’t abandon us to temptation”
So, Although God never directly tempts believers as it says in...
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
So, God does not tempt men, but He will subject them to trials that may expose them to Satan’s assaults, as in the case of Job
This petition reflects the believing one’s desire to avoid the dangers of sin altogether
God knows what one’s need is before one asks as it says in
8 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
And He promises that no one will be subjected to testing beyond what can be endured...
Promising a way of escape through endurance as it says in
13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
As recorded in the book various Scriptures God does allow these trials and testings...
He does sometimes lead them ito situations that “test” them...
As recorded in the book of Job when God allowed Job to be tested and as it also says in various Scriptures like...
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and that man was blameless, upright, fearing God and turning away from evil.
2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.
3 His possessions also were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
4 His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
5 When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.
7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.”
8 The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.”
9 Then Satan answered the Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing?
10 “Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
11 “But put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.”
12 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord.
13 Now on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them,
15 and the Sabeans attacked and took them. They also slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
16 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
17 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands and made a raid on the camels and took them and slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
18 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
19 and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped.
21 He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked I shall return there. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
22 Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.
6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials,
12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you;
10) Accompanying Us
10) Accompanying Us
Verse 13: But deliver us from evil
We need to be humble enough to ask for spiritual protection
The phrase translated “evil” in the Greek can mean either “evil” or “the evil one,” namely, Satan
So, our best protection from Satan, sin, and temptation...
Is to turn to God and to depend on his direction
; ;
10 who delivered us from so great a peril of death, and will deliver us, He on whom we have set our hope. And He will yet deliver us,
11 you also joining in helping us through your prayers, so that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the favor bestowed on us through the prayers of many.
24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,
10 ‘Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
In fact, many times when God allows us to go through testing periods...
It is done for the main intent to have us lean on Him
If our trials bring us closer to God then it is, in fact, a blessing
Let us consider Jesus’ prayers for His elect...
15 “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.

Consider the following that was written by an unknown author
I cannot say “our” if I live only for myself.
I cannot say “our” if I live only for myself
I cannot say “Father” if I do not endeavor each day to act like his child
I cannot say “who art in heaven” if I am laying up no treasure there
I cannot say “hallowed be thy name” if I am not striving for holiness
I cannot say “thy Kingdom come” if I am not doing all in my power to hasten that wonderful event
I cannot say “thy will be done” if I am disobedient to his Word
I cannot say “on earth as it is in heaven” if I’ll not serve him here and now
I cannot say “give us this day our daily bread” if I am dishonest or am seeking things by subterfuge
I cannot say “forgive us our debts” if I harbor a grudge against anyone
I cannot say “lead us not into temptation” if I deliberately place myself in its path
I cannot say “deliver us from evil” if I do not put on the whole armor of God
I cannot say “thine is the kingdom” if I do not give the King the loyalty due him from a faithful subject
I cannot attribute to him “the power” if I fear what men may do
I cannot ascribe to him “the glory” if I’m seeking honor only for myself
And I cannot say “forever” if the horizon of my life is bounded completely by time

So, prayer as we have discussed...
Is clearly essential in a believers life
If you claim to be a follower of Christ...
Yet prayer is not a part of your life...
Then you have re-examine your status with God...
If you don’t care to speak to God it...
If you don’t seek His advice in your life...
If you have other priorities...
If you are just too busy to pray...
Then their is no relationship between you and God
A relationship need constant communication
The relationship that is essential for salvation...
Is for Jesus to be our Lord
Jesus can’t be your Lord if you refuse to do what He says is essential
Jesus can’t be your Lord if you don’t talk to the Father
Jesus can’t be your personal Savior until He is first your personal Lord
So if you haven’t made a decision for Christ to be your Lord...
Or if you said Jesus is your Lord but never really ment it...
Today is the day to surrender
Today is the day for you to crucify your old self to the Cross
Today is the day to be born again
These prayer alters are open if you need to make a desision
So come on up and make a decision today
Pastor Jimmy will be here to speak with you...
And These prayer alters are open if you just need pray
God bless
