Background on Text
Good Evening Church
Please turn your Bibles to Matthew chapter 6
We will be focusing our study tonight on verses 9-13
Today’s message will be about prayer...
Specifically about the model of prayer Jesus gave us
Many call this The Lord's Prayer or the Model Prayer...
This is Jesus' own pattern for how we should approach the Almighty Father
Opening Prayer
Before we dive into the text...Please join me in prayer before we start
Opening Illustration
A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city...
Because he was short of time and couldn’t find a space with a meter
A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn’t find a space with a meter.
So he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: “I have circled the block ten times.
If I don’t park here, I’ll miss my appointment.
Forgive us our trespasses.”
So he put a note under the windshield wiper that read:
“I have circled the block ten times.
If I don’t park here, I’ll miss my appointment...
Forgive us our trespasses.”
When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note:
“I’ve circled this block for ten years.
If I don’t give you a ticket, I’ll lose my job...
Lead us not into temptation.”
So, again, today we will be studying the text found in which reads...
Reading of the Text
Background on Prayer
Prayer is essential in a believers life...
As it is our time of having a personal audience with the God of the universe
We see prayer as a foundational aspect for many in Scripture
Example of Moses praying for God to turn His anger away from Isreal in
Example of David praying for repentance and pardon in
Example of Nehemiah praying for success and God’s will in his life is
Example of Jesus praying for the Father to take away the cup of suffering but ultimately praying to do the Father’s will in
Example of Paul praying for comfort for the church in Corinth in
These are all great examples of prayer
Yet prayer is not a part of your life...
Then you have re-examine your status with God...
So, how do we pray like that?
If you don’t care to speak to God it...
How are we as Christians supposed to pray?
If you don’t seek His advice in your life...
If you have other priorities and are too busy...
Then their is no relationship with God
Jesus answers this question...
Then their is no relationship between you and God
A question the disciples also had as seen in
And Jesus answers this with a model for prayer
Prayer as a Model
Verse 9: Pray, then, in this way
The prayer Jesus says here is a model...
Not merely a liturgy
It is notable for its brevity, simplicity, and comprehensiveness
Jesus provides a model for prayer as many pray with meaningless repetition and act like a hypocrites as seen in
This also indicates that this prayer is not meant to be repeated word for word all the time as some do
What Jesus is about to share is a template or guide to prayer
Jesus is telling us what should make up our personal prayers
Of the 6 petitions made...
3 are directed to God in verses 9 and 10...
And 3 are directed toward human needs in verses 11, 12 and 13
To help us remember the points Jesus reveals to us should accompany our prayers...
I divided this template into 10 points
1. Address the Father
2. Acknowledge His Holiness
2,
3. Advancing His Kingdom
4. Ask for His Will
5.
As in Heaven
6. Assurance for our Needs
7. Appeal for Forgivness
8. Always Forgive Others
9. Avoiding Temptations
10.
Accompanying Us
1) Address the Father
Verse 9: Our Father who is in heaven
Closing Illustration
Let us be very intentional in our prayers...
We are to pray directly to the Father and ask all things in the name of Jesus
Look at Jesus instructions throughout the gospels
This is
1 John 5:14-15
Referring to God the Father as being in heaven...
Reminds believers of God’s sovereign rule over all things
2) Acknowledge His Holiness
2) Acknowledge His Holiness
Verse 9: Hallowed be Your name
This, along with the first part of this verse is a recognition of God as Father and Lord
We must acknowledge God’s holiness
The concern of this first petition is that God’s name would be hallowed...
That God would be treated with the highest honor and set apart as holy
You see, the name in antiquity meant a good deal more than it does with us...
We use it for a personal designation, and that is about all...
But in antiquity the name was held to be bound up with the person in some way...
The name and the qualities associated with the name went together...
Thus in the opening of this Gospel we find that the baby was to be called Jesus...
For he would save his people from their sins...
The name and the activity went together
Just like we call a judge, “Your Honor”...
Or a government official, “Congressman, Congresswoman, Mr. President, etc”
Or simply when we refer to others a “Sir” or “Ma’am”
