Week four
I believe that a lot of people know that they are sinners
maybe not use the wording like that, maybe they will
but they know that there is something wrong in their life and that they are missing something
New Year’s resolutions
everyone trying to perfect their lives believing that something is wrong or missing
We celebrate the sacrifice of soldiers and we thank God for the sacrifice of his son
but do we really know what that means?
Today we will look at the OT sacrifices and compare to what Jesus has done for us
Why do we need a sacrifice… Why did Jesus have to die, couldn’t it have been done another way?
Since the law has only a shadow of the good things to come, and not the reality itself of those things, it can never perfect the worshipers by the same sacrifices they continually offer year after year. 2 Otherwise, wouldn’t they have stopped being offered, since the worshipers, purified once and for all, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? 3 But in the sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year after year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
5 Therefore, as he was coming into the world, he said:
You did not desire sacrifice and offering,
but you prepared a body for me.
6 You did not delight
in whole burnt offerings and sin offerings.
7 Then I said, “See—
it is written about me
in the scroll—
I have come to do your will, O God.”,a
8 After he says above, You did not desire or delight in sacrifices and offerings, whole burnt offerings and sin offerings (which are offered according to the law), 9 he then says, See, I have come to do your will. He takes away the first to establish the second. 10 By this will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time.
Our Need for a Sacrifice
Our Need for a Sacrifice
We have gone over needs before, every preacher does
whenever somebody thinks of needs, we always think, this world...
food, water, clothing, ext…
we think of what we do not need
smart phones, bigger houses and fancier cars
for the most part, especially away from the church or the Pastor, we do not go with I need Jesus’ blood!
without the blood of Jesus we are relying on the law to save us
Since the law has only a shadow (foreshadow) of the good things to come, and not the reality itself of those things, it can never perfect the worshipers by the same sacrifices they continually offer year after year.
The law is a shadow of God’s plan…
a foreshadow of what was to come
an understanding of what it is that Jesus was going to do for us
we cannot fully appreciate all that Jesus has done for us if we do not understand law
The law cannot perfect the worshipers - v1
Perfect means to make complete
the text assumes our need for a sacrifice
a sacrifice is needed due to our sin
We live in a world...
We know that our world is broken, but that we too are not perfect or complete
We all have failed to live to God’s standard
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all.
We all went astray like sheep;
we all have turned to our own way;
and the Lord has punished him
for the iniquity of us all.
a sacrifice is needed because we cannot enter the presence of God
The Lord spoke to Moses after the death of two of Aaron’s sons when they approached the presence of the Lord and died. 2 The Lord said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron that he may not come whenever he wants into the holy place behind the curtain in front of the mercy seat on the ark or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.
perhaps one of the saddest verses in scripture
“you cannot come whenever you want...”
a sacrifice is needed because we are doomed to Hell
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord
Atonement will be made for you on this day to cleanse you, and you will be clean from all your sins before the Lord.
Atonement will be made for you on this day to cleanse you, and you will be clean from all your sins before the Lord.
OT law, the High Priest would have to go in and make atonement, a sacrifice for the people of Israel every year because of their sins
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord
I know that we have been over this verse… I go over it a lot
I think that it is important for us to appreciate the second half of the verse, to know what we are owed
The Old Testament Sacrifice
The Old Testament Sacrifice
The need for sacrifice goes all the way back to the first sin in the Garden in
After their sin, Adam and Eve felt shame for the first time
Adam and Eve attempted to cover their sins with leaves
God kicked them out of the garden, but clothed them after the first sacrifice
Ever since, man has been trying to cover himself with things to cover his shame to no avail
the OT law, is God reveling to us our need and what it takes to pay that price
The OT Sacrifices were just a shadow
So the previous command is annulled because it was weak and unprofitable 19 (for the law perfected nothing), but a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.
God had a better plan in mind…
this as a shadow was just to show us our need and what that sacrifice was truly going to have to be
Otherwise, wouldn’t they have stopped being offered, since the worshipers, purified once and for all, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?
Why did Jesus have to die… the sacrifice and blood of the animals could never
the sins were covered, but the worshipper knew in his heart that he was sinful
that feeling of I know that it is still wrong…
The OT Sacrifices were not eternal
The OT Sacrifices were not eternal
But in the sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year after year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

the writer is not talking about the sacrifice just being a hassle
who wants to have to go back to the temple, year after year
the seventh month on the tenth day, according to
it is because we know that earthly things are insufficient
I might be able to repay somebody a wrong by payment or replacing something
but a holy eternal God cannot be repaid with worldly things
what are we going to give him that he does not already have
He created everything… He owns the cattle on a thousand hills
the OT Sacrifices left us wanting
The Holy Spirit was making it clear that the way into the most holy place had not yet been disclosed while the first tabernacle was still standing. 9 This is a symbol for the present time, during which gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the worshiper’s conscience.
Christian Standard Bible Chapter 9
8 The Holy Spirit was making it clear that the way into the most holy place had not yet been disclosed while the first tabernacle was still standing. 9 This is a symbol for the present time, during which gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the worshiper’s conscience.

a worldly sacrifice leaves us wanting to do more… because we know that we are sinful
see how the law reveals to us our need for Christ
the Israelites, through these sacrifices, should see that they need much more
we in reading through the OT, should be reminded that on our own, we are doomed
that we cannot cover our own sins
that best efforts, and the sacrifice of the best we have to offer leaves us understanding the separation between us and a holy God
The Sacrifice of Jesus
The Sacrifice of Jesus
Enter Christ!
You do not delight in sacrifice and offering;
An eternal God entering into his creation as a man
you open my ears to listen.
Therefore, as he was coming into the world, he said: You did not desire sacrifice and offering, but you prepared a body for me. 6 You did not delight in whole burnt offerings and sin offerings. 7 Then I said, “See— it is written about me in the scroll— I have come to do your will, O God.”

You did not desire sacrifice and offering,
but you prepared a body for me.
6 You did not delight
You do not ask for a whole burnt offering or a sin offering.
in whole burnt offerings and sin offerings.
7 Then I said, “See—
it is written about me
in the scroll—
I have come to do your will, O God.”
Many believe that this is Christ speaking through the Psalmist… that is what the author here is insinuating
7 Then I said, “See, I have come;
You prepared a body for me…
I have come to do your will
I delight to do your will… obey your commands
in the scroll it is written about me.
your instruction is deep within me… your word is in my heart
8 I delight to do your will, my God,
and your instruction is deep within me.”
By this will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time.
Jesus’ sacrifice was superior (his own blood)
Jesus offered himself -
keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Jesus for the joy before him…
that is you and I
he endured… resist or stand firm
Jesus’ sacrifice was once and for all
Jesus did the will of God through his sacrifice
The eternal Son, made an eternal sacrifice
back to week 1
we no longer have to rely on another man to yearly go and sacrifice on our behalf
We can rest and rejoice that when we stand before God we are holy…
the righteousness of Christ has been put on us
Jesus’ sanctuary was heavenly, not earthly
his sacrifice is not a symbol of things to come, but allows us to enter the actual sanctuary of God
we get to enter into his presence…
not a tent, not a certain building, but from wherever you are, you can enter in to the Holy of Holies
with no fear of death
with no fear of comdemnation
with the assurance of love and acceptance
Closing -
God desires that none should perish…
The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance.
God’s desire is for you to come to know him and accept the sacrifice that Jesus made for you
without it, you are on your own to pay this debt for your sins… one that you will not be able to pay
surrender today and repent of your sins, enter into His presence by the blood of Christ
Jesus is the Garden of Gethsemane
