Passage:

14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests

15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver.

16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.

17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?”

18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’ ”

19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

20 When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.

21 And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”

22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?”

Title: You Don’t Have To Be Born Evil to Be Used For Evil.

Share the story of a theoretical Physicist who out of the blue Kidnaps and kills someone.
No signs of tendencies toward evil
Straight “A” student
Went on to become a Professional Student (Got paid to do his Master and Doctorate work)
The Murder!
He picks up a Young Overseas student who is in the states to do her Graduate work at the University.
Some would say he was born with these tendencies.
Some would say he was mentally ill.
Some would say he was demonically possessed.
I would have to say I believe all three could be the case.
Many professionals and non-professionals agree that some people are born with tendencies toward things.
Many professionals and non-professionals agree that some people develop mental illness.
Transition Statement: But the one that seems to be the most debated, if not excluded (Not discussed) is someone being demon possessed.
WE:
I am here to tell you this morning that demon possession is not obsolete! Its is not something that took place just in the bible days.
Just as it was real in the days of Moses, King Saul, and Judas, it is real and active today.
This is not a fear tactic to get you to come and accept Christ, this is truth that is to be revealed so that the lies can be called OUT!
I am here to personally testify this morning of an encounter with someone who was demon possessed!
Share the story of Brandy (DON’T USED NAMES OR PLACES).
Share the difference between Possession and Oppression!
Oppression: The state of being subject to oppressive treatment. Mental pressure or distress.
(Satan messing with your mind with lies and falsehoods)
Possession: The state of having, owning, or controlling something.
(The state of being controlled by a demon or spirit.)
Tyndale Bible Dictionary Demon-Possession

demonic oppression and demonic possession; this supposedly differentiates an attack from without and control from within. Although a non-Christian may be said to be “possessed” by a demon, the Christian cannot be so possessed, for he belongs to Christ and his human spirit has been sealed by the Holy Spirit (Eph 1:13). Demonic spirits somehow know and acknowledge this seal.

Transition Statement: We find scriptural reference of demonic possession throughout the New Testament.
GOD:
In the OT
I Samuel
In the NT (Examples)
3-26
23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,
24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”
25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”
26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.
2-8
country of the Gerasenes.
2 And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.
3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain,
4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.
5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.
6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him.
7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”
8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”

-26
25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out ....
But the one example of demonic possession I want to focus on this morning is the one we read about at the beginning of the message.
29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.)
Some of you might be saying, “We didn’t read about any demonic possessed person in .”
30 Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered him.
We don’t read about it in Matthew but we find Luke and John writing about this man who was possessed by Satan.
-6
3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve.
4 He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them.
5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money.
6 So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.
I want us to expound on this event this morning!
The gospel writers help us see the events of Judas ......
We can see where things started to go south for Judas. (Steps leading from Oppression to Possession)
He was upset about the woman who anointed Jesus with the “very expensive” flask of ointment. ()
He then decides to seek out the Priest to betray Jesus. ( Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests.)
Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests
We are told Judas “WENT” to the chief priest.
Its not like they texted him and said come see us if you wants some money.
He looks to profit from this betrayal (What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver.)
“What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver.
He looks to profit from this betrayal
He waits for the opportune time ( And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.)
And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.
He waits for the opportune time
He even try’s to deny planning out the betrayal (Is it I?”) (NIV “Surely not I?”)
He even try’s to deny planning out the betrayal
Luke tells us “all” of this led up to this one recorded moment ( Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot)
Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot
The word that helps us believe this is the word “entered”
This word is most frequently used in the understanding of demons (entering into) someone or something.
Same word “Into the swine” (Mark 5:12-13)
What’s really interesting is this word is an “INDICITIVE” (The writer is stating this is “REAL” not metaphoric.)
Some people might try to say, “Well he (Judas) was Born that way!”
Some people might try to say, “He (Judas) was mentally ill!”
This is why he “planned out” to do harm to Jesus.
Again, I am not disregarding this thought (Born this way or mental illness)!
What I am saying is this, “Judas was demon possessed!”
The scripture tells us he was!
And we have to stop allowing all other excuses to become the “go to diagnosis” all the while excluding the idea that a person can be demon possessed.
Transition Statement: So what do we take with us from this sermon this morning?
YOU:
I want us to recognize the path (steps) toward demonic possession so that we can be free from the snares and chains that satan will try to throw in our way.
The things Satan will use to lead us to opening ourselves up to Demonic Possession.
Oppression can and will lead to Possession if its not ...... Recognized, Resisted, and Rebuked.
Transition Statement: I want to point out 4 things to recognize ......
WE:
Judas Seeks out the Priest!
If we find ourselves upset or angry about someone or something and we are seeking out a way to get even, we are being oppressed by the enemy!
THIS IS NOT CHRIST LIKENESS!
Judas Seeks to profit financially!
If we are seeking to profit financially or positionally by doing an injustice to someone else, we are being oppressed by the enemy!
Judas waited for the right moment and the right time!
Premeditated!
If we are holding onto information to use against someone, (Blackmail) we are being oppressed by the enemy!
Judas attempted to DENY! “Surely it is not I”
If we find ourselves lying (trying to justify a lie) we are being oppressed by the enemy!
This oppression will eventually turn to Possession if we are not able to recognize, resist, and rebuke!
I have good news for us all this morning though .....
You might be saying to yourself, “how can we recognize, resist, and rebuke?”
By the Spirit of God dwelling within us!
Jesus knew He was going to be betrayed!
Jesus knew it was going to be Judas betraying Him!
Jesus even gave Judas the opportunity to confess (recognize, resist, and rebuke)!
Remember I gave a disclaimer at the beginning of this message.
Here is what I hope is the end result of our time together .....
If you were disturbed by the topic .... I hope your eyes and ears were open to the truth of the matter.
If you were scared ..... I hope you are no longer because you know now that you have authority over your fears.
If you found the topic hard to believe ..... I hope you are challenged to dive into God’s WORD and see for yourself what His Word has to say about the matter.
Close in prayer!
