Sufficient proof offered

The journey continues, the passion has been proven, now the passion will be provided for examination, but still there is unbelief.
Jesus was delivered for our offences (Isa53:5)
Isaiah 53:5 NASB95
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
What do you see as a key word in here that impacts us? - OUR
He was raised for our justification (Rom4:25)
Romans 4:25 NASB95
25 He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.
What is the key word here, beyond justification? - OUR
The resurrection is the final proof needed to prove who He was (Rom1:4)
Romans 1:4 NASB95
4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,
What is the proof offered here as to Jesus identity? - the resurrection
Proof does not equate to belief (Mk16:10, 13)
A dead Savior cannot save anybody, the resurrection from the dead by power of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of holiness is just as much a part of the gospel message as the death on the cross (1Cor15:1-8); the book of Acts gives much attention to the resurrection, you can research that (Act1:22; Act4:2; Act4:33)
Paul said that it was of first importance (v.3)
the death burial and resurrection (v.4)
His appearance is was to the apostles and to 500 at one time (v.5-6)
One this is certain, if Jesus did not rise from the dead, we, 2000 years later would not have heard from him. The resurrection is the central fact of the whole Christian faith, Because we believe as Paul states in 1Cor15:1-5, we can know a few things for certain.
Jesus is not a figure in a book, He is a living presence in our lives
eus
Jesus is not a memory, but a presence, He is not someone to just discuss, but He is someone we are invited to meet.
The Christian life is not the life of a man who knows about Jesus, but the life of a man who knows Jesus!
A quick meld of the gospels before we get to the Mark account alone. When it comes to who, what, where, when, check this out.
First seen by Mary, on first day of the week (Jn20:11-18; Mk16:9-11)
Then seen by other women (Mt28:9-10)
Can’t leave Peter out (LK24:34; 1Cor15:5)
The two men on the road to Emmaus (Lk24:13-32; Mk16:12)
To the disciples in the upper room (Jn20:19-25; Mk16:14)
Now, let’s look at the Mark account together.
Mark 16:1–2 NASB95
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
Mark 16:3–4 NASB95
3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large.
Mark 16:5–6 NASB95
5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.
Mark 16:7–8 NASB95
7 “But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.’ ” 8 They went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
Mark 16:9–10 NASB95
9 Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. 10 She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping.
Mark 16:11–12 NASB95
11 When they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it. 12 After that, He appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the country.
Mark 16:13 NASB95
13 They went away and reported it to the others, but they did not believe them either.
What did you see, what did you notice, what sticks out to you?

Now Appearing

Jesus had been crucified (Mk15:22-41); buried (Mk15:42-46) they watched to see where he was buried (Mk15:47) now we get to the next sequence of events. Jesus was going to make his appearance.
Saturday night (after Sabbath over) purchase made to anoint Him (Mk16:1)
Early, before dawn (Sunday; first day of the week) they come to the tomb (Mk16:2)
There was a pending question, who was going to do the heavy lifting (Mk16:3)
First I think we need to identify the who (Mk16:1; Lk24:10)
Luke 24:10 NASB95
10 Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles.
Who do we see? (Mary M, Mary mother of James, and Salome, as well as other women.
FYI, the Mary mother of James is believed to be: "Mary, mother of James the Less and Joseph, wife of Alphaeus was the sister of Mary the mother of the Lord, whom John names of Cleophas"
According to research regarding Joanna we can know: Joanna is shown as the wife of Chuza, steward to Herod Antipas while being listed as one of the women who "had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities" who accompanied Jesus and the Apostles, and "provided for Him from their substance" in .
Mary of Magdalene (Mk16:9-11; Jn20:11-18; Lk24:10-12; Lk7:38)
We know from text that Jesus cast out 7 spirits from her (Mk16:9)
John 20:11–12 NASB95
11 But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; 12 and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying.
She also can know she ran to tell others what she heard (MK16:10)
Mary was filled with emotions (Jn20:11) and it was her norm (Lk7:38)
Mary of Magdalene was there and weeping and looked into the tomb, John says two angels, Mark says “one youn
John 20:13–14 NASB95
13 And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus.
After seeing the tomb empty
Luke 7:38 NASB95
38 and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.
Jn20:15-16
Matthew 28:9–10 NASB95
9 And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and take word to My brethren to leave for Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
John 20:15–16 NASB95
15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher).
Other women (Mk16:1; Mk16:8; Mt28:9-10; Pro8:17)
Luke 7:39 NASB95
39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner.”
Jn20:17-1
They fled the tomb, but He appeared to Mary, then to them while they were on the way
Matthew 28:9–10 NASB95
9 And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and take word to My brethren to leave for Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
The attitude o the women was that they had come to pay the last tribute to a dead body. The attitude of the apostles was that everything had finished in tragedy.
The women wanted to pay last respect to the one they loved, the one they enjoyed being with, the one who was so gracious and forgiving. It was not a matter of Messianic Prophesy not being fulfilled, it was about the one the missed.
Proverbs 8:17 KJV 1900
17 I love them that love me; And those that seek me early shall find me.
Pro8:17
Look at those words; those who seek Him early, it was early, before the sun rose, it was still dark.
Are we willing to get up early to seek the living Lord? Don’t look at it as an obligation that must be fulfilled, but an opportunity that should be seized!
Jon Courson said “If you feel as though you are in the dark now, be like these women, rise early and seek the risen Lord”
These women were the first with the resurrection story! Why? Because they sought the Lord!
Two other disciples walking (Mk16:12; Lk24:13-32)
There is much to learn from what was said in all these accounts but we will get to some of that as we go.

Love speaks

Love speaks of the resurrection story and with eyes and hearts that are amazed and even disbelief is still there, love still speaks.
Love questioned (Mk16:3-4)
The women who wanted to pay last respects to the one they loved had a question, who would roll the stone away.
They get to the tomb and the stone had been rolled away (v.4)
The stone that was rolled away was not to let Jesus out, He could walk through the stone, but it was for the women, then John and Peter to be able to come in, to see the reality of the resurrection
The proof of the resurrection was needed so man could know that God’s scheme of redemption was complete in Jesus for without it people could still worship any of the gods. The resurrection places Jesus in a category by Himself for all the other supposed gods are dead and buried.
The resurrection proves the validity of the sacrifice and also the ability for us to live in Christ. It is not about our being good to get into heaven, it is not about us trying to imitate someone, but about the one who imparted love on us! The resurrection is essential to the Christian faith.
Loves speaks in amazement (Mk16:5-6; Lk24:4)
Mark 16:5–6 NASB95
5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.
What can we learn here.
they “the women” entered the tomb, saw a young man, heard the man, he explained to them that love has risen and showed them proof of the resurrection.
In Luke it says two men; Mark only focuses on one
Luke 24:4 NASB95
4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing;
Would you be amazed, perplexed if you were with them? These women the first recipients of the resurrection story, witnessed the proof of the prophesy fulfilled right before them. I would think sure I’d be amazed, either that or freaking out.
Love gives direction (Mk16:7; Jn20:2-10); love is displayed (Jn20:11-18; Mt28:8-10)
Mark 16:7 NASB95
7 “But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.’ ”
What are the instructions given and the promise given?
Go! tell the disciples and Peter
Peter who was feeling pretty low you can bet, having denied the Lord, feeling could not be bearer of Good News because of choice. So when Peter get’s word, along with John they come running (keep your finger or your ribbon there in Mark, but turn to John20:2-10 with me)
John 20:2–3 NASB95
2 So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” 3 So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb.
John 20:4–5 NASB95
4 The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first; 5 and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in.
Jn20:6-7
John 20:6–7 NASB95
6 And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7 and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself.
John 20:8–9 NASB95
8 So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. 9 For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.
John 20:10 NASB95
10 So the disciples went away again to their own homes.
What do you see, what more is filled in for us from the John passage?
Now I don’t want us to stop there for now love is going to reveal Himself.
John 20:11–12 NASB95
11 But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; 12 and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying.
John 20:17–18 NASB95
17 Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’ ” 18 Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.
So Mary of Magdelene was the first one to see the risen Savior and she brought the message of hope of the resurrection, but it was not well received
Mark 16:9–10 NASB95
9 Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. 10 She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping.
Mark 16:11 NASB95
11 When they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it.
Then, He revealed himself to the other women on the way.
Mt28:8
Oh don’t let me forget the other verse
Matthew 28:8 NASB95
8 And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples.
They had fear and joy, great joy when they left the empty tomb, and then the met the risen Savior!
Notice the apostles position (Mk16:10-11)
Mark 16:10–11 NASB95
10 She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it.
Remember Christ came to give life full, but the thief came to kill, steal and destroy and here he is a thief of faith and a placer of unbelief.
Do you struggle with some form of unbelief at times, maybe because of a situation or circumstance you don’t understand.
We hold the faith maker in our hands, we hold the truth that refutes Satan’s faith and joy stealer.
It has rightly been said that a little faith will get you to heaven, but a larger faith will bring heaven to you!
Remember they were mourning, they were weeping, but still they were unbelieving. but there was more proof of love to be displayed.
More proof of love displayed (Mk16:12-13; Lk24:13-35)
Mark 16:12–13 NASB95
12 After that, He appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the country. 13 They went away and reported it to the others, but they did not believe them either.
If we had the time we would look at the Luke passage, but it is a longer version of the Road to Emmaus and there is great stuff in the passage, and that when it is being shared with the apostles leads the the Lord displaying Himself to them, minus Thomas, but that is for another day.

Love Displayed

Sometimes we may not recognize love that is displayed right before us. The love of God displayed through the resurrection of the Son demonstrates God’s love for us.
May the sufficient evidence of the resurrection be in you
May the resurrection be the basis of your Christian faith
May your Christian faith display the love of God that was poured out for you and for me.
