Galatians 1:10–13 ESV
10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. 11 For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man’s gospel. 12 For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. 13 For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it.

14 And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. 15 But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, 16 was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone;

Intro:
years ago I read an article about Gripe Sheets.
It’s called: a “Gripe Sheet”
If the pilot finds something on the plane to “gripe” about.. they fill out the form.. submit it to the mechanic..
A Gripe Sheet is a form that a pilot fills out when they recognize a problem with the plane they are flying. I don’t recall if other airlines have Gripe Sheets, but these were specifically from Quantas Airlines. In the article, they gave several, humorous examples of Problems and solutions.
The mechanic reviews the problem, and responds to the pilot, before the next flight..
I’ve found several of these “Gripe Sheets” to be quite entertaining..

Gripe Sheets- They communicated a problem..
and… they communicated a solution..
There was a problem side..
And a solution side.. ++
As the Apostle Paul.. looked upon the predicament w/in the Galatian church..
He had a gripe.. a problem……
A big problem.. that needed a very quick solution.. ++
SLIDE 12
P: Grace being discounted in exchange for works..
S: Salvation is by grace alone, and not works!

SLIDE 13
P: Messenger is in it for himself. He’s a charlatan and a hypocrite..
S: The messenger seeks to please God, and not man.. ++
Not only is Paul bringing a defense for the message..
But he is also, bringing a defense for the messenger… Himself!
As we remember, Paul had brought the gospel message to the Galatian gentiles..
Soon after Paul left..
Others came in.. with additional information.. ++
Paul had told the Galatians, that they were justified completely according to the grace which was given through Christ..
These new messengers were contradicting that message..
Telling them, that their justification depends heavily upon their devotion, as a people of complete Gentile heritage… to fulfill certain laws and Jewish traditions..
.. fulfill certain laws and traditions..
Essentially.. Paul’s message was:
“Salvation is by grace alone, and not works” ++
And the message which followed Paul was:
“Salvation is by grace, initially.. and then, it is maintained by works.” ++
They discredited and reversed the message that Paul previously delivered..
And… to give further support for their agenda..
They sought to discredit Paul also. ++
In our previous study… vs. 7… we learned that they were “perverting” the gospel..
Meaning literally, that they were reversing the gospel..
Paul spoke of their gospel.. as being.. “a different gospel”
Which.. is not “another” ++
Essentially saying..
That they were embracing a different message of good news..
Which was not.. a message of good news..
Why?
Because… the good part.. had been removed..
The grace.. had been replaced.. by works. ++
Throughout this letter.. Paul is going to continue his defense.. for the “case of grace”
But now.. he takes a few moments..
To defend the messenger..
Paul’s message is wrong.
Why?
Because Paul is a looser..
He’s in it for himself..
He stole his theology from others..
And then, perverted it for his own purposes..
He’s not credible.. therefore.. neither is his message. ++
SLIDE 14
Galatians 1:10 ESV
10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
++
Here, Paul defends his position.. as a SERVANT..
the Gk word here.. is “doulos”..
This word ‘doulos’ is a general term for ‘slave’… but in the context of the NT, it is often used to reference a specific kind of slave… and that is, ‘the bond servant’.
This is the servant.. who, after serving his term of commitment.. - which he willingly went into to as a financial arrangement…
Decided to remain a servant.. ++
Why would they do this? Because he was devoted to the master.. he loved the master.. and chose.. over freedom.. to commit his life in service..
This is the second position.. or, the second title that Paul is defending for himself…
He defends himself as an apostle..
And.. he defends himself.. as a slave. ++
There was apparently an accusation.. that Paul is motivated to please men..
Maybe that was part of the Judaiser’s argument..
They told the believers in the Galatian church..
That Paul withheld the mandatory practices of law and tradition..
To please them..
++
Paul was being seeker sensitive. Paul was catering to consumerism. Paul was afraid to offend… ++
But truth be known.. it was more likely that the accusers were guilty of this very crime..
For Judaism actually held a strong influence in this region.. ++
Paul suffered persecution.. under the Jewish influence.. for preaching grace to the Gentiles..
Paul himself.. before his conversion… was dragging Christians off to jail for their religious crimes of not being Jewish
If any group was out to “please men”.. it would be the Judaisers..
They were the ones who were seeking to appease the strongest religious influence..
By interjecting the works and traditions of the Jewish legalists… into.. this new religion.. ++
.. into.. this new religion..
This is evident in our world..
Churches are changing their doctrines.. their beliefs.. their approach to the Bible..
Why?
Because they are trying to appease the strongest influence in their land..
In our land.. relativism has become a strong influence..
Standards of belief.. standards of right and wrong.. principles of dogmatic belief and faith..
Are all disputable..
They are all fluid.. they are unstable in their definitions..
Our secular, social, and political culture has, and continues to create new forms of morality.
++
There are new forms of morality centered around things like gender, climate, plastic straws, and even law enforcement… that were non existent 3, 5, 8 years ago. We are now outraged over new moralities that didn’t even exist a few years ago.
++
These new fad-moralities… are dictating our culture’s thought They are the backbone of narratives that would be completely foreign just a few years ago.
++
And… the church… the group that is called to embrace a timeless truth… is bowing to it.
Many have abandoned the authority of the Bible..
Many are creating doctrine.. based on popular opinion..
Politics.. feelings.. the influential voices of famous individuals..
These are the forces.. ++
And churches are swaying.. they are abandoning absolutes.. they are re-defining right and wrong..
Not based on the Bible..
But rather.. based on the new fad-moralities.. ++
Here’s a simple truth we can fall back on as confused humans in a radically changing world…
-
God does not change.. He is immutable..
-
But many propagate a faith..
That says.. Yes.. God does change..
And we need to be changing our faith.. to fit into the ever changing state of our culture..
It doesn’t make sense…
++
is abundantly clear..
Jesus Christ.. the same yesterday, today and forever..
He is the same.. and His message is the same.. ++
The NT is the most reliable of all ancient manuscripts..
Over 5000 complimentary manuscripts defend it’s reliability..
Yet.. our society will discredit it.. in a heartbeat.. ++
Remember when the Davincci Code came out… and people ooohhhed and ahhhhhed over it.
Even though it’s basis.. was from two unsubstantiated “gospels”..
One disputably.. written by a disciple.. one, disputably written by Mary Magdalene..
Both containing similar statements about Jesus kissing Mary Magdaline.. ++
These two contradictory and unsubstantiated documents.... became the real story.. That kiss meant marriage.. and marriage meant.. a holy blood line… and everything else became the greatest cover-up of all time..
That became the real story.. That kiss meant marriage.. and marriage meant.. a holy blood line… and everything else became the greatest cover-up of all time..
And sure.. it was a brilliant fictional novel.. - I read it. I enjoyed it as fantasy fiction…
The movie was boring..
Maybe.. if, instead of Tom Hanks.. they had Harrison Ford play the role of Indiana Jones..
And… if there were more booby traps and humor..
The movie would have been good..
But.. Ron Howard missed his opportunity on that one..
But.. consider the facts.. Many people read that book.. and believed it as being true..
It poses the evidence of a speck of dust up against mountain that is real scripture..
And people eat it up.. because they are desperately looking for an excuse me make the Bible UNTRUE. ++
Anything.. to set them free.. from the absolutes and the responsibilities that exist.. in the uncompromised scripture..
++
Nice ideas.. wonderful artistic renderings..
Especially that one.. that starts out with a paramecium on one side of the page..
And ends up, w/Ward and June Cleaver on the other side..
W/all the transitional forms in between.
After billions of years.. of transitional creatures..
Suddenly.. we live in a world.. where adaptation w/in a species is undisputed..
But still.. there are no transitional creatures..
The fish that became the frog.. is still the fish.. the frog that became the lizard.. is still the frog.. and the lizard that became the bird.. is still the lizard..
Nice theory..
Wonderful posters.. Monkey Man… Cro-Magnun Man.. Neanderthol Man.. Modern Man…
Still.. no facts..
But we are taught it.. as if it were a fact..
And our society embraces it..
Because it is a pillar of denial.. towards the existence of God.. the reliability of scripture.. and the ultimate responsibility of man.
I’m not a scientist.. but I look to and depend upon those who are.. I rely upon their expertise and their research..
My conclusions are not purely based on faith..
They are also.. holding to science..
And as of yet.. no scientist.. has taken evolution.. from the theory stage.. to the “facts” stage..
So.. up until this point.. there’s nothing to believe in..
And if we do choose to believe in evolution..
We make it.. a matter of faith..
And that puts the evolutionist on the same ground as the creationist..
Both standing.. on faith..
My faith.. holds to a standard.. and I believe that God gave me the scriptures..
And it works best.. if I believe what it says… the way it was said. If I believe it in context of how and why it was written… if I believe it in an interpretive manner that pulls meaning out, rather than putting meaning in…
++
We know, that scripture itself testifies, that all scripture was given by the inspiration of God.. ++
If I please man.. I say.. that only the scriptures that make people comfortable are inspired by God..
The rest of them.. were put in the Bible by some old grouchy guy who hates people..
Paul.. might be seen as an old grouchy guy..
But I give heed to the words he wrote:

Colossians 3:22 ESV
22 Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.
22 oBondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. [1]

Ephesians 6:5–8 ESV
5 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, 6 not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, 8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free.
5 eBondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, fwith fear and trembling, gin sincerity of heart, as to Christ; 6 hnot with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, 8 iknowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free.

1 Thessalonians 2:4 ESV
4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.
4 But as dwe have been approved by God eto be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, fnot as pleasing men, but God gwho tests our hearts. [3]
++
Notice.. that in and in .. Paul equivocated the position of “bondservant”.. with the act of “Not pleasing men”..
That’s why Paul is defending the position of “slave”
For as one.. as a slave of Christ.. it is contrary to his title.. to give heed to wishes of men, over the wishes of God ++
If I please God..
I look beyond.. the popular forces of my world..
And embrace that standard that He has given me..
Who am I to re-define the most reliable of all ancient manuscripts?
Who am I to take and add from the volumes which are filled with miraculous prophecies and fulfillments..
If you want to believe something else.. No problem. We are all creatures of free will. We benefit from a free society that tolerates and allows different beliefs w/in the confines of the law..
I am not offended if someone thinks I’m wrong. ++
I have met people.. who are offended.. when I believe they are wrong.. They say, by me having an absolute faith.. one which does not allow a path to God for the Buddhists or the Muslims… that I am unloving and judgmental.
I tolerate people w/other beliefs. Their freedom to worship rocks openly is the same freedom that allows me to worship Jesus openly. We share a freedom… at least… we do here in America.. ++
Society tells us Christians… that we need to be tolerant… which, I believe we are. We tolerate just fine. We just don’t affirm…
++
But.. more often than not.. in this society.. it’s our belief that’s not tolerated.. - My society is putting pressure on me.. to change my beliefs.. My society is doing its best.. to smear my faith.. My society is slowly changing the laws.. slowly.. changing the mentality.. slowly.. putting pressure upon my fundamental interpretation of the bible…
In a sense.. the loudest voices of society.. are telling me, what I can and cannot believe.. and it’s becoming less and less subtle.. ++
This is our greatest challenge..
To have a faith.. that is delivered by.. given by.. communicated by… God..
And not a faith.. that is given by man..
We are bondservants… and as bondservants, we can’t heed a popular voice as it contradicts the scriptures. ++
Paul makes this the basis for his continuing argument..
++

17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus. 18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and remained with him fifteen days. 19 But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord’s brother. 20 (In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie!)
++
Paul gives them the breakdown of his testimony..
He was a zealot.. a big shot propagating the strongest religious influences of his society..
He opposed this new religious movement..
…tried to destroy it..
It stood in opposition to the laws and traditions that he lived by.. and he was not going to tolerate it.. ++
Now.. again.. here is a mentality.. that exists in and amongst almost every religion..
Why?
Because.. we by nature.. feel threatened by those things which oppose us..
Which, when it comes to God.. doesn’t make sense.. ++
If I’m threatened.. as a Christian.. because the Mormons are knocking on my neighbor’s door..
Or.. if paganism becomes very popular in my community..
Or.. if a B’Hai Faith Center opens up in my community..
… If.. I’m threatened by that..
Then I’m thinking wrongly about my God.. ++
My God is all powerful.. I am not the foundation upon which His kingdom stands..
I don’t have to kill or destroy those who live in opposition to my God..
We are called to win others to Christ.. by love..
Not by force.. not by violence.. not by anger.. not by words of damnation.. ++
As a zealot.. Paul was threatened by Christianity..
A threatened religion doesn’t tolerate.. it doesn’t win by love..
No.. it’s methods are more violent.. ++
The church didn’t always get this. The church didn’t always understand the scriptures.
Christianity is shamed in history.. by those who forgot that God is omnipotent..
And.. felt as if the existence of their religion depended on their efforts.. to maintain it by force.. ++
Therefore.. because people did not understand the Word.. or the nature of God..
Hundreds of thousands.. maybe more..
Have been killed.. in the name of God..
This happened, because of a corrupt understanding of the Bible… because of the unity of church and government… and because of power hungry men who were in leadership.
++
The crusades… the persecution… the inquisitions… - they had nothing to do with Christianity.
++
As a zealous Pharisee.. this was Paul’s mission..
He was responding to a threat.. a plague.. a cancer..
.. called.. “Christianity” ++
Back then.. they were just calling it “The Way”..
And he went at them.. w/force.. dragging off believers to a place of imprisonment..
But.. then.. there was a drastic change..
It was sudden.. years of mental programming.. years of indoctrination.. ingrained logic and principle..
It was all changed… miraculously..
Paul had a powerful.. dynamic conversion..
And God called him.. ++
SLIDE 20
Paul defines his previous life as a persecutor and a legalist in:
Philippians 3:4–6 ESV
4 though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.
(NKJV)
++
4 though gI also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I hmore so: 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, iof the tribe of Benjamin, ja Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, ka Pharisee; 6 concerning zeal, lpersecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
That’s where he was…
And now.. vs. 16.. Jesus has been revealed in his life..
His mission has been defined..
Vs. 17.. to preach Jesus amongst the Gentiles..
And where.. did Paul receive this new indoctrination?
Did he go immediately to Jerusalem..
Did he come before the disciples and say:
“Okay.. I met Jesus.. now tell me what I’m s’posed to believe.”
No.. he went off into the dessert..
And received his education.. from the Lord.. ++
Paul knew the scriptures..
And once he received Christ..
He also was given.. the indwelling influence of the H.S.
Paul spent.. a good chunk of time.. receiving from the Lord.. an understanding of the gospel..
And an understanding of what he was s’posed to do w/that gospel.. ++
For some might say..
“I’m a new believer.. and I’m going to go off on my own.. not listen to any humans or their ideas.. and just.. form my faith on my own.”
Paul did receive discipleship and instruction from other believers..
But ultimately.. he took responsibility.. to receive what he received.. from the Lord.. ++
That’s the same responsibility that each of us has..
You are not s’posed to believe what I say, at face value.. ++
I’m even jumping up on a soap box or two as I ramble on an on..
But you are not s’posed to believe what I say, at face value.. ++
No.. I might help to point, or direct..
But ultimately.. our responsibility.. is to receive what we hear.. from the Lord..
Therefore.. we test the prophets.. w/the Word..
Through prayer and study.. ++
You learn.. from the Lord.. and not from me.
This was Paul’s argument..
I’m not regurgitating something that the Apostles in Jerusalem gave me..
I’m not stealing all my content from a commentary..
I’m not downloading my sermons off of the internet..
I’m not using somebody elses outline… ++
This is what Paul claims…
What I bring.. I have received from God..
My goal… is to please Him..
I am His slave.. and I bring to you.. His message..
It’s not my message.. I didn’t get this message from the 12 in Jerusalem..
Sure.. I met Peter.. I met James…
But.. I didn’t immediately consult with anyone.. ++
Interesting wording here…
in vs. 16.. . he did not immediately consult..
consult.. a word that means.. “to be enlightened on a subject”..
If I wanted to be enlightened on the subject of Apple Computers..
I would consult with Jim Young.. because he’s a Mac Snob.. ++
If I wanted to be enlightened on safety procedures, I’d consult with Erin… because he’s an expert.
++
If I want to be enlightened on
In vs. 18.. he went to visit Cephas… who is Peter..
In other translations, it says he went to ‘see’ Peter.. See… a word which speaks of “becoming acquainted w/a person or thing”
A word.. which has more of a “sightseeing” definition to it..
If I wanted to “see, or visit” Apple computers.. I’d walk through the Apple store..
And look at them..
“Oohh.. that one’s got a big screen.. wow.. the lap top is silver.. ?”
And then.. I would stroll on out of there..
w/o being told by an associate which models are best suited for me and why. ++
Paul.. wasn’t getting his indoctrination from Peter.
If I went to that garage to hound him for information on how to change my rear brakes..
I’d be conferring with him for mechanical knowledge..
If I went to that garage to have lunch w/him and chat about life the universe and everything..
I’d be “seeing him”..
Paul.. wasn’t getting his indoctrination from Peter.
He was getting to know.. Peter..
For 3 years after his salvation.. Paul received.. his indoctrination..
… from the Lord… ++
I’m encouraged by this. yes, we need people. We need to learn from people. but even as people speak into our lives… our real instruction needs to come from the Lord. Test the people with the Word. God uses people to speak messages… but it’s your job to make sure those messages are acually His. ++
May our allegiance hold firmly.. to the leading of God..
.. and we will respect their opinions.. their doctrines.. their teachings.. their philosophies..
But.. may we not follow them on their word a lone..
We will always have ideals.. titles.. or camps that we align ourselves with..
But.. may our allegiance hold firmly.. to the leading of God..
And loosely.. to the leading of men..
I line myself with the camp that is “Calvary Chapel”
But it’s continually up for review..
For my hold.. is loose upon Calvary Chapel…
And firm.. upon Jesus.. ++
We should be more attuned to Jesus… than we are to our denomination, or our doctrinal camp, or our theological identity.
++
to be more attuned to your denomination..
than to Jesus..
To be more attuned to being a Calvinist..
Than to Jesus..
To be more attuned to being Pentecostal..
Than to Jesus..
To hold more firmly to the teachings of some pastor.. or some leader..
Than to Jesus..
I love Paul’s testimony.. for it’s a great encouragement to all of us..
From the mouths of men.. we will hear many things..
But.. may the information.. that passes from our head.. to our heart..
Pass.. only on the approval and instruction.. of Jesus Christ.. ++
SLIDE 21
Galatians 1:21–24 ESV
21 Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. 22 And I was still unknown in person to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. 23 They only were hearing it said, “He who used to persecute us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” 24 And they glorified God because of me.
++
A good testimony.. will speak volumes.. it will travel beyond you.. it will be told.. from person to person..
It will be used.. as an example.. as an encouragement.. as a tool…
Paul’s life displayed great change..
and it gave reason for believers.. to glorify God..
And that’s the challenge I want to leave with you today… ++
Paul lived a miracle..
So the question that stands before us .. is this..
Are we.. living a miracle..
Are our lives.. portraying a good testimony?
Are we living a life… that communicates a positive message.. a positive example.. a positive encouragement???? ++
What is our reputation?
Reputations.. examples.. testimonies..
They aren’t built.. upon our words..
They are built.. upon our actions.. ++
We can talk ourselves up.. real good..
but if we commit, and don’t follow through..
if we promise.. and re-nig..
If we display integrity outside.. but not inside..
If we tell others to do..
What we don’t do ourselves.. ++
If we display piety..
And don’t live it..
If we portray honesty and humility..
But do it only as a device for personal gain.. ++
If we proclaim intimacy w/Christ..
And display anger, judgment .. and condemnation..
If we claim the Spirit..
And there is no love.. or gentleness.. ++
For granted.. we are imperfect.. and we are emotionally tossed to and fro..
But.. w/God.. emotional influences take a back seat..
Personal feeling and desires.. take a back seat..
Ambitions for comfort.. take a back seat..
Faith.. perseverance.. and a desire to honor God.. every step of the way..
… now.. that takes the front seat. ++
And that produces a life..
Of character..
And.. a testimony.. that speaks volumes..
