White Christmas_pt4: Light of the World

Christ, Light of the World

Good morning and Merry Christmas, Church!
Let’s celebrate Jesus!
This collection of sermons, titled White Christmas, has been all about Jesus - the GIFT!
Who is thankful for the GIFT OF JESUS?!
John 8:12 NIV
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
THANK GOD FOR THE LIGHT!
You no longer have to sit in the mess
You never have to search for answers
You never have to wonder if things are good between you and God
There is peace, there is hope, there is LIGHT!
SO - There is light and there is darkness.
We all begin in darkness (Fall of the world)
But there is Light!
He tells us: Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness.
Thank God that Jesus, the Light… leads me out of darkness!

Light leads me out of darkness

Yes, we can understand this is in a general sense… most of us in this room have been Christians for some time. So, we get it…
But, digging deeper, we find more insight into this “Light of the World”
Let’s go back to the beginning of this chapter...
[SUMMARIZE STORY] - Adulterer brought before Jesus.
Read
John 8:1–12 NIV
but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
You see, Light is never about “being a better Christian, or more religious.” It’s simply about coming to HIM!!
And His light will drive away darkness (sin and death)
And it’s so powerful and full of truth that this Light… sends away my accusers

Light sends away my accusers

Light opens our hearts
Light is meant to
Light is meant to be shared
Light is meant to be shared
[PAYOFF] - No one can accuse me. Only He.
Matthew 5:14 NIV
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
Mattew 5:14
And He condemns me not.
Oh what a Light! A purifying Light!
Matthew 5:14–15 NIV
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
He is the standard, not any other accuser.
And understanding this part, releases us (true freedom)
Released from ourselves...
And also releases us to be what He’s recreated us to be...
Matthew 5:14–16 NIV
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Light is shared through me

[MUSICIANS RETURN]
[CHALLENGE] - This new year, let your light shine like never before!
[Christmas Tie-in]
This Christmas, we are reminded of the reason for the season.
It’s Jesus.
But, not as simply the leader or founder of our faith, but as a gift. The gift of LIGHT!
When it was time (in the custom) to dedicate their child Jesus, Joseph and Mary took Him to the temple
There they met Simeon, who was kept alive (it was promised) until he could see God’s salvation for the world.
Well, guess what Simeon saw this day...
Luke 2:29–32 NIV
“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.”
Luke 2:22
Simeon saw the light!
Jesus is the Light
He is your light in darkness
Are you facing any darkness this morning?
Allow His light to free you from its grip.
- The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
The New International Version. (2011). (). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.
