Introduction: If you were to google “All I Want For Christmas” you would find a link to Mariah Cary’s hit that debuted 25 years ago
Lyrics:
don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true oh
All I want for Christmas is you
I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need, and I
Don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
------------------------------
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy
With a toy on Christmas day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you
I won't ask for much this Christmas
I just wanna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe
I won't make a list and send it
To the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake
To hear those magic reindeer click
'Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
my door
Oh, Baby all I want for Christmas is you
All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere
And the sound of children's
Laughter fills the air
And everyone is singing
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won't you bring me
The one I really need
Won't you please bring my baby to me quickly
I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just wanna see my baby
Standing right outside my door
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for Christmas is you
All I want for Christmas is you, baby
Those are the lyrics from the first verse of Mariah Carey’s hit song “All I Want For Christmas Is You)
A few days ago the Newspaper USA Today published an article in which they said:
Christmas came two days early when Mariah Carey gave us all something we never knew we needed – a star-studded music video for "All I Want For Christmas is You."
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Carey's Christmas tune
Tyler Perry kicks off the video, sitting at a piano and jokingly butchering Carey's name before the video shows clips of Ryan Reynolds, James Corden and many other A-listers singing along.
The video includes home videos from the Kardashians, Laverne Cox and Tracee Ellis Ross and others singing along to "All I Want For Christmas is You." The music video ends with Carey's 8-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, dancing.
Carey shared the video in a tweet thanking her celebrity friends for participating.
"WOW! This is one of the best Christmas gifts I could ever have gotten. I am so thankful to all of my friends and favorite artists who participated in this video," the Grammy-award winning artist wrote. "You brought a huge smile to my face. THANK YOU!"
Carey’s holiday song has been a cultural favorite for years but achieved chart success only in recent years. It first entered the Top 10 songs in 2017 and reached its previous high of No. 3 last year.
It’s only the second Christmas song to reach the top spot, joining The Chipmunks' "The Chipmunk Song" (with David Seville), which ruled for four weeks in 1958-59, according to Billboard.
Carey’s holiday song has been a cultural favorite for years but achieved chart success only in recent years. It first entered the Top 10 songs in 2017 and reached its previous high of No. 3 last year.
Speaking with USA TODAY last month, Carey reflected on her song reaching 25 years of air time.
"It's so funny, somebody was just asking me, 'What were you doing 25 Christmases ago?' " Carey, 49, said. "I would probably say somebody was giving me a bottle and they were singing me a sweet lullaby Christmas tune. Because I was just 1 year old, so I don't know!
"It's very much like I live in the land of the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus," she said wryly. "I don't acknowledge time, I don't know what it is. I rebuke it!"
But I wonder if Jesus were singing the song today,
what would Jesus say?
What would Jesus want for Christmas today?
Especially when you consider today is the day we celebrate Jesus’ birthday
Better yet, what would be Jesus response to God the Father’s question in our text this morning-
Let me tell you what God said next.
He said, “You’re my son,
And today is your birthday.
What do you want? Name it:

Transition To Body

Psalm 2:1 ESV
1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?

Nations Rage (openly defy the King)

be in rebellion, formally, be restless, i.e., conspire to be in open defiance of a king at a coronation, implying tumult and disorderly conduct in the act. of attempting the overthrow of government (Ps 2:1+)

Peoples Plot (talk among one another but not with the King)

plot, plan, i.e., to think and so decide a course of action, with a focus that verbal exchange takes place

Psalm 2:3 ESV
3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.”

Peoples Refusing God’s Grace

Romans 2:4 ESV
4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
Psalms 1–72: An Introduction and Commentary The Kings against the King (2:1–3)

a typically blind reaction to God’s easy yoke and ‘cords of compassion

Romans
Matthew 11:25–26 ESV
25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
Matthew 11:
Matthew 11:28–30 ESV
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Body- The LORD’S Christmas Wish List

Testify Concerning The Son

Psalm 2:7 ESV
7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.
John 3:16-
John 3:16–21 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
Definition of a decree

regulation, decree, statute, ordinance, i.e., a clear communicated prescription of what one should do

Concerning Statutes:
In biblical terminology, statute (Hebrew choq) refers to a law given without any reason or justification.
Concerning Ordinances:
An ordinance is a religious ritual whose intent is to demonstrate an adherent's faith. Examples include baptism and communion, as practiced in the Christian traditions such as Anabaptists, all Baptist churches, Churches of Christ groups, and Pentecostal churches. Ordinance is not to be confused with sacrament:
Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and many historic Protestant traditions (Anglicans, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Methodists, Moravians, and Reformed) prefer the use of the term "sacrament" because this term is associated with being a means of grace.
While a sacrament is seen as a means of grace, an ordinance is a practice that merely demonstrates the participants' faith. For example, some Christian traditions, such as Baptists, do not call them "sacraments" because they believe these rituals are outward expressions of faith, rather than impartations of God's grace. The ordinances are often observed in remembrance of Jesus—primarily his baptism and the Last Supper (Holy Communion).
Our clearly communicated prescription of what we are to do i.e. Carry Out The Great Commission
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 7:7 ESV
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Pray More To The LORD

Matthew 7:8 ESV
8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
Psalm
Psalm 2:8–9 ESV
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
Matthew 7:9 ESV
9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?
Matthew 7:7–8 ESV
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
John 16:24 ESV
24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
John

Take The LORD Seriously

Psalm 9:10-11
Psalm 9:10 ESV
10 And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
Psalm 2:10 ESV
10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.
Be Wise And Be Warned
1 Peter 2:
1 Peter 2:9–10 ESV
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

be warned, i.e., receive information about a future danger, or the consequences of a certain action

i.e., receive information about a future danger, or the consequences of a certain action

How?

Psalm 2:
Psalm 2:11 ESV
11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

Respectfully Serve The LORD

serve, be a slave, be indentured, i.e., give considerable energy and intensity to give aid to another, often in a social arrangement of having lower status than free

Respectfully

reverence, fear, i.e., a state of piety and respect toward a superior

worship, i.e., the act. or speech of showing profound reverence toward a superior, which may include ritual action

awesomeness, i.e., that which causes wonder and astonishment

Joyfully Shout To The LORD

When is the last time you shouted joyfully to the LORD
Make the church building tremble
Make your home tremble
Make your car tremble
Psalm 2:12 ESV
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
tremble = shout

rejoice, be glad, be joyful, i.e., be in a state of an attitude or feeling of favorable circumstance (Ps 9:15[EB 14]), note: this joy may be expressed in song, shouts, or even joyous shrieks and calls; note: some translate Ps 2:11 as “tremble”

JOY. The experience of deliverance and the anticipation of salvation provide the most significant occasions for rejoicing among the people of God in the OT. The coming of the Messiah, who delivers his people and brings salvation becomes the basis for rejoicing in the NT. The response of joy, gladness, or happiness is not only a deep inward feeling, but is expressed in celebration when God’s people gather together.

Lovingly Submit To The Son

Psalm 2:12 ESV
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
i.e. Kiss the Son
An imperative to:
Pay homage to the Son
Submit to the Son
Definition of kiss in the old testament

kiss, i.e., to touch with the lips, as a gesture of affection and mutual relationship, or submission

An imperative to show:
gesture of
affection to the Son
affection & mutual relationship to the Son
Submission to the Son
Submit to the Son
That’s why the Psalmist said:
Psalm 116:1–4 ESV
1 I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. 2 Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live. 3 The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish. 4 Then I called on the name of the Lord: “O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!”
And That’s why of all the commandments, the most important are:
Affectionate relationship with God
Psalm 116:1
Mark 12:20 ESV
20 There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring.
Mark 12:30 ESV
30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
Mutual relationship among God’s people
Mark 12:31 ESV
31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
But also In Judaism

In Judaism three types of kisses were considered valid: the kiss of reverence, the kiss of reunion or reconciliation (Gen 45:15), and the kiss of farewell.

Illustration: Redemption
A pastor of a church in Boston met a young boy in front of the sanctuary carrying a rusty cage in which several birds fluttered nervously. The pastor inquired, “Son, where did you get those birds?”
I trapped them out in the field,” the boy replied
“What are you going to do with them?”
“I’m going to play with them, and then I guess I’ll just beed them to an old cat we have at home.”
When the pastor offered to buy the, the lad exclaimed, “Mister, you don’t want them, they’re just little old wild birds and can’t sing very well.”
The pastor replied. “I’ll give you two dollars for the cage and the birds.”
“Okay, it’s a deal, but you’re making a bad bargain.”
The exchange was made, and the boy went away whistling, happy with his shiny coins. The pastor walked around to the back of the church property, opened the door of the small wire cage, and let the struggling creatures soar into the blue.
The next Sunday he took the empty cage into the pulpit and used it to illustrate Christ’s coming to seek and to save those who- like birds- were destined for destruction. The difference was that Christ had to purchase our freedom with his own life.
Definition of kiss in the new testament

Placing the lips upon a person or thing as a mark of homage or affection.

Since we reverence (fear) the LORD
Romans 2:3–5 ESV
3 Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.
2 Corinthians 5:11 ESV
11 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience.
2 Corinthians 5:
Our Ministry of Reconciliation (reunion)
2 Corinthians 5:16–21 ESV
16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Close- It was by grace

Amazing grace how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now I'm found. Was blind but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear...
When I was dead in my sins!
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
When I was lost without a hope in the world!
That precious grace appeared over 2000 years ago
That grace was Mary’s precious baby
born in a manager
lived 33 years on the earth
fed the hungry
healed the sick
set the captives free
preached the good news
equipped the saints for works of ministry
But on one Friday
At a placed called Calvary
He died!
