Preparation Work:
We covered
-Reading vs. Studying
-If they have read ahead (2-3 times in one sitting, if possible, a total of 3-4 times), you can ask their impressions about author, recipients, and purpose
-Explain the reason for the 4 readings (familiarity, author, recipients, purpose)
-Explain different contexts (immediate close and far [text and passage], proximal [book], distant [Testament or whole Bible]
-Explain the goal of this study is to find answers from the passage. First, the passage, then the book, then the Bible (cross-references, etc.), finally external resources
-Methods of study have 3 sources for answers to questions, in descending order of quality: immediate context (including the book itself), the Bible as a whole, external resources
-Give a quick introduction to the “Stick with the text” concept (and card?) as they study and develop understanding
-If they want, give them a quick introduction to how the proper study methods develop the right understanding and then the ability to teach that to others correctly
-Ask whose understanding is it we seek? First, the original audience’s understanding, meaning and application, then our own understanding, then our own application
