Holistic Preaching

Head:

Mind, intellect, logic, rationality — what is text saying?
Proposition:
God has a vision for his people to be his (1) treasured possession, (2) a kingdom of priests and (3) and Holy Nation
God saves first and then calls them
This is an opportunity to be God’s people, but they are afraid, they stand at a distance
Moses functions as mediator
They must ‘prepare’ to meet God
God wants to authenticate the leadership of Moses
God is ‘testing’ his people so that they may not sin
What kind of ‘fear of the lord’ invokes obedience, or worship
God has a vision/calling for his people — based on grace.
(His awesomeness was for them first, it still is)
God is to be revered and respected
God reveals himself that we might worship him and in worshiping him we would obey him.

Heart:

Emotions, desires, wants — how does the text disrupt me?
Tension:
How can we love (and thus obey) a God we are terrified of (fear)?
God doesn’t want terror stricken obedience. He could get that easily.
He wants your heart to see him as the most worthy/lovely thing in all existence.
What if the most awesome being in the universe was not against you, but you? (Rom 8:32)
How can God be present with a sinful people?
Pull:
Fear — fear of God, awe/terror
Why is God doing this all?
You are his bride — love, longing and affection.
Ferocious Love.

Hand:

Action, outcome, will — what is the text calling me to do?\
Fear God — revere God — respect God
Justice delayed is not justice denied
embrace grace
Don’t keep your distance
Don’t be afraid
Jesus has made a way
Listen to Him
Keep his Covenant (the faith)
Become (realize) you are his treasured possession
Embrace your calling as a kingdom of priests
We’ve God to deal with God
The world has to deal with God, there is no fear of God in their eyes.
What is wrong with the world today?
There is no fear of God before their eyes.

So What??

So That??

What is the fallen condition focus?

The Fallen Condition Focus (FCF) is the mutual human condition that contemporary believers share with those to or about whom the text was written that requires the grace of the passage for God’s people to glorify and enjoy him.
