Keeping In Step With the Spirit-Galatians 5:16-18

Today's messages, keeping in step with the spirit. Join us with your Bibles and relations chapter 5 verses 16 through 18.

Good morning, good morning, and welcome again to the Mount Olive, Baptist Church and Welcome to our Bible teaching and preaching Ministry recall messages from the mount, like to welcome you. Again today to our fine church and ask that you would join me. Just in a word of prayer. Father in Heaven. God, we thank you for you so much God for how you blessed us, how you kept us from last week and this week, we thank you Father, for blessing, our mothers and being with them on last week and this week and we pray that every father that today that you were superintend over this word, that you would bless my brothers and sisters and all those who hear your word, father, we ask it in Jesus name, amen. Well I pray that all the mothers had a great Mother's Day on last week and I pray that you would continue to experience not only God's blessing but it's pleasure in that certainly, your children will continue to rise up and call you blessed today, we are going back to our series stride toward Freedom. We're dealing with another installment of it. We find ourselves in chapter 5 of The Book of Galatians. you know, his name was Cadet Captain, George Clinton Smith, the Third, He was the commander of what we would call the DC, 91st Air Force, JROTC unit at Ballou, Senior High School. I wanted to be involved in all TC in some way, shape or form and I didn't know at the time that it would be at that particular school. I didn't know they had an Air Force unit and so I enrolled in that school after leaving another school being involved because they closed at school down and when I got there I found that what they had, there was the Air Force unit. And when I walked in, I noticed that there was some other things going on that in order to be involved in that unit, you have to enroll into that particular program. It so I did. And as I enroll in that program, I can still hear the voice of George Clinton Smith. The third calling out commands in the Armory at that time. He was calling them out in such a way that they sounded confusing to the uninitiated. He would say Left, Right March? Right flank, March tribute to the real March March, right? Flank, March Left Flank, March rear marchmont Time, March day with say, to the platoon platoon hole in the people would stop and wanting things that I begin to notice was he was preparing those Folks at the time in and after I join, he would be preparing me to for a bigger day when is things. That was really comical to me, though, with the lack of Harmony that people had when they will learn to me. They couldn't swing their left hands and their right hands or arms, and legs, in such a way, that they were able to keep proper pace and Cadence as they were in the unit. And I remember as you were saying, left right, left left, right left the way, people would walk and they walking like stiff boards. And one that is really comical to notice. How organized and uncoordinated people were You know, I find the same type of thing happening to Believers, not in the military, even though we are in a spiritual Army, I find the same thing happening to us as well. We're not keeping in step if you will with the spirit. And so just for a few moments, I want to talk about that today. In step with the spirit, my back was turned to Galatians chapter 5 verses 16 to 18 and the text reads. This I say, then. Walk in the spirit. And you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh, lusteth, against the spirit, and the spirit against the Flesh. And these are contrary to one another to the other, so that you cannot do the things that you would, but if you be led of the spirit ye are not under the law. Thus ends the reading of the text. Now, in a previous message, we know that that is we talked about Liberty, love and license at Freedom, brings with it, its own responsibilities and obligations it. Releases, the best in the cell, releases US in US. The ability to be the best of what we can become and to be all that God intended us to be loved as balance in context to our freedom. It helps us to frame up what it looks like. When we love people Liberty, on the other hand, is something that gives us the ability to express that love, but Liberty is not license. Liberty is not license. Liberty freezes up to love people. In fact, the way they ought to be loved love gives parameters to Liberty. If you love someone, you don't do things to hurt them if you love them. And so life is always it always watch this. Life is always takes advantage of people, it always takes advantage of people or something, but the person it hurts. The most is generally us whenever we begin to take license to do things, our own way, the people will ultimately don't benefit from that. It's us because we're not being all that God intended us to be. So when we use our Liberty, To hurt other people's expense, our own profit, it stunts on maturity. And this is what Paul says when he's talking about this and I'm going to read this from the New Living Translation. When it says, beware of destroying one another that's what happens when we take Liberty. He says this right up until then and verse 15 of the same passage. He says, how do we do it? We do it. Because what we do is we begin to take advantage of one another through Liberty. So it so, what Paul does coming on the tail end of that, that is understanding that Liberty and understanding, love and understanding license is Paul. Then he gives us three ideas, three things that we need to concentrate on in order for you and I to keep in step with the spirit. The first thing he says is he gives a command 1/16, he says this, I say then walk in the spirit and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh that we know it came. And because it's in the imperative mood of the tense of the verb, hear the present tense of the imperative peripeteia, that is walk. Also indicates a present activities. Now in progress, the word walk is significant in this compound word carries with it. The idea of conducting oneself, the idea of making one's Department synonymous with the Holy Spirit. Moving us about as we should Charles Haddon Spurgeon said this about it. He says, he says, live by the spirit, means to walk under the spirits power. It means following his guidance, the spirit never leaves a man into since he never conduct him in to Self Indulgence in excess, be obedient to the great principle, the spirit that goes with the doctrine of Grace and salvation by faith and then you will not be obedient to that listing of the flesh. He says, that is in You by Nature. He says, he says, to us basically this, he says that if you being led by the spirit that makes you living a sanctify life, that means you're living a holy ghost-filled life. That means that you live in. This have a life that is motivated and driven and energized by the power of the holy spirit in your life. Watch. This is not the doing that. You're concerned about is the big that you concerned about. Because when you become a Believer, do you have the Holy Spirit and you, and you are able to be all that you can be by way of the spirit in your life. Timothy George says, this modern religious pedagogy office, many answers. A Winsome personality, one's innate abilities, Advanced degrees and Theological education, special seminars, and how your Christian Life. Social activism spiritual Psychotherapy and others but Paul's answer is simple. The Holy Ghost, the Holy Ghost. If you will only the spirit of God who has made us free from sin gives us new life. In generation can keep us truly free as we experience walking through him and in the power of sanctification, Paul says, some very powerful things that he used a double negative. He says, watch this in verse 16, the latter part of it, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh to the phrase, here is ume in the original language. In other words, Paul says it this way, he used to do nothing will not ever watch this or as the sister say not ever watch that never allow it to come to completion or to fulfill. Its ultimate goal. Seal us can't fulfill his ultimate goal when I'm living in the power of the spirit. Because me being in the power of the spirit it mitigates against it, it does not allow. It does not allow the flesh to have full rein or power. So the only way to deny the flesh from having its way is to behave to be surrendered, to be living, by the commands. And dictates of the Holy Ghost, it's just not enough for us to understand, but Paul is saying when he gives the command that is to walk by the spirit. He also says, if we do this, you not, you're not fulfill the lust of the flesh which is really key CD. The judaizers Hat trick, the Galatians. Into believing that the only thing that could keep them was a law and it's like many of us. Many of us who, who are believers when we came from a background. That told us that the way that we maintain our relationship with God, as the things we had to do is we had to do something to maintain our relationship. Not understanding that we're already God's children. We're already have met his approval were already saved by his grace and so the manifestation that we are all those things is the fact that we live out what the Holy Spirit has put in you when I'm, you know, they had come to fear that a life without the law meant a life without being saved. And so what happens is is that they had come to do this but but what they did was they allow this to be fear and not confidence. Not confidence in living by way of the power Spirit. Not fear, has a lot to do with a lot of Believers today. A lot of Believers are living by fear, not by love their living by rules and not buy relationships. And so they find themselves Bound in that type of fearful situation that won't allow them to experience all that God has for them, is that that had God has provided for them. It's just that fear as put a barrier between them and God. The part, when you said that fear creates, what it fears, if you fear being separated from the ones that you feel separated from someone, even though that may not be true or in actuality dr. Marten, Laura Jones say, when a man is defeated by life, it is always do ultimately to the fact that he's suffering from the spirit of fear. And, you know, that, the Bible says that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power love and a sound mind. But dark tomorrow and joy said that the spirit of fear is real. Ultimate cause of all failure, life, and unhappiness is fear. Fear. Fear fear. Is Paul says, to them to live by the spirit. And your life in the spirit will cause will cause the lustful desires to fail. They won't reach their maximum potential in Robinson, mcquilkin. The former president of my alma mater Columbia Bible College. You said, as two question, whatever he experienced, some type of failure. He says number one, am I surrender to the Lord, Do I want only his will so far as my choice is concerned, and number two is the Lord, just now meeting on my needs. What course, we know that they answer here that he says, must be to take all him or should we say take him at his word, right? And through there, through this, these fighting within, and without do through the circumstances in and out with, we know that we do not have to fear because his grace is sufficient. But he said something else, who the Apostle Paul says he said that, he says, now that we talked about the command to walk by the spirit. We now need to talk about the conflict that we faced. By the spirit, he says conflict to the conflict in 4:17 BC the conflict, The War of The Flash versus the spirit. You hear this a lot today about war. We hear a lot about water day, but we see it in a strata and experiencing it away in our own flesh. And I don't buy this for the flesh. He says, lots of against the spirit and the spirit against the Flesh. And these are contrary one to another so that you cannot do the things that you work. In other words, this contest, our principles that is between us cause of that, the maximize their potential because one has to you, to the other post isn't something. We cannot do what we ought to do because the flash is fighting against the spirit. Burgess said the worst enemy we have is the flesh. Augustine used to pray. He used to say deliver me from that evil, man. And what he really meant was from myself is not something that we would have to ask God to Deliver us from ourselves. Our own sinful lust.

The all the fire. The devil can bring from Hell could do us little harm. If we do not have so much fuel and I'll make sure he brings it out. It is a powder is the magazine of the old man that is in our Perpetual danger. That causes Perpetual danger when we are gone against foes. Without we must not forget to continually be on our Watchtower against the foes from within namely, our own simple flesh. You know, when I got saved, I got saved, I was 9 years old. I remember my struggle. I was going to fail the fourth grade. And so since I was going to fill the fourth grade I needed to know Jesus immediately. And so, you know, I got down on the side of my bed and open up the Bible that my mom is giving me an inside of the pages. They're inside The Gideons Bible. I prayed the sinner's prayer in that day. 9 years old. I became a believer in Jesus Christ. But you know I'm 59 now and so I have spent 50 years trying to live by the power of those Bridge, making sure as much as possible that I have yielded myself to the power of the Holy Spirit. But you know what, it's a constant struggle. And I've been trying to do this after 50 years the war continues it as long as we are on this Earth beloved as long as you're in this fleshly body as long as you have this body with you if it's you're going to be fighting that particular War. And I can imagine some of you have just come to know the Lord, you'll be dealing with that type of struggle, but being the Chiba, love it that you have the victory already. Remind me to give you two illustrations of how strong this, this particular war. Is the first one that I like to give you is from the movie, The Lord of the Rings. I remember one of the things that came to my attention in this is that as Frodo was trying to figure out a way to handle the power. This mean that then Gandalf came to him and he said to him you have to understand something about this ring. He says he begin to explain. He says, you know, Frodo he said the ring wants to go back to its Master. It needs to go back to its master and that's what's going on with us. Let the moment we get saved that this body wants to go back to do the things that he used to do. And if we have facility in those things, when we were living out in the world, guess what? Those calls come to us to return back to the life of which we turned away from, that's the truth about. Then it's going to continue to happen with us. We but we cannot allow our flesh Powers, but in the case of the way she said, they cannot allow their Liberty watch this to allow their fresh to thrive, nor can they allow there to hear it to The Loft? The pup, the Eagles up, know, they were free, but they were free to serve Christ and they were free from the law. The second one, I like to give you is from the great Bible teacher by the name of FB Meyer. Now, he had, he had as his own business and a business that generated firewood. If you will hit employee prisoners, and as he was employing, these prisoners, one of the things that he notice about them. As he, he gave them all types. Of opportunity. Gave them a job again and do wages, he gave them a place to live. He he took care of them in such a way that he gave them good employment. And so in exchange for that, he expected that. But guess what? He never got that eventually. What happened had to happen was. He fired at all of those employees? And he bought himself a good circular saw We got this circular saw with a gasoline engine and in 1 hour that circular saw was able to create as much opportunity as much produce as much wood as all of the company of men that he'd hired together. so, Meijer had a little conversation with his song. He looked at it, he said, how can you turn out so much work? He asked, are you shopping in the Stalls? My men were using sausage. No. Is your place shinier? The sauce said, no. He said this just isn't that the lubrication oil that you usually gets the wood? Isn't that? The saw answers? No. But even he imagined his thinking about imagination, if it could speak, what they would have said is I think there's a stronger power driving me. He says he if he says I think there's a stronger driving power driving me and behind me, he said something is working through me with a new force is not the power. It's a power behind me. That's what he says. It's not I watch this, but it's the power behind me. Somalia later. Observe that many Christians and many ministers. I working in the power of the flesh. In the power of their intellect. And their energy and their enthusiastic Zeal, if you will. But with poor effect, They need to become linked to the power of God through the Holy Ghost and so Paul has talk to us. Now watch this, he's talked to us about the command. That is walk in the spirit. He talked about the conflict, the war about the Flash versus the spirit. And now he's going to talk to us about something. We all desire. And that's the conquest that is winning the war over the flesh.

What am I a past time to studying fights and battles in history up from time to time out. Take a, take, a particular book and I'll just read through the different battles that have gone on in history. In the the famous generals that led them and one particular General that comes to mind is general Douglas MacArthur in one of the things he said he said in war there is no substitute for victory. You see, we all want to win some of us, don't even care how we when we want to win. But seeing the spiritual Wellness, Believers, it matters how we win, because if we approach it wrong, even though we may win, we will lose. But the thing about us as Believers is is that we've already one, we already have the victory in Christ, so we're not fighting for victory with fighting from Victory. It reminds me of Joshua and God told Joshua that he had given him the land. But the thing about it was as Joshua had to actually go and possessing, the my Research indicates in this texting and verse 18 and says this, he says, but if you be led of the spirit, you are not under the law. You see that down verse 17 to sit for the fleshly lusts against the spirit, the spirit against the Flesh. And these are contrary, the one to the other, so that you cannot do the things that you would, he says, but if he be led by the spirit, you are not under The law. Now, my Research indicates that this verb is in the past tense of the verb, which means that the subject namely believe in you and I are receiving this action and specifically, that's why we are being led. In other words as believe this, we are being led by the spirit one, great scholar nexogy by the name, is Louis Johnson, wrote. All believers are led by the spirit. It is their Birthright, according to Romans chapter 8, 14 for as many as are led by the spirit of God, are the sons of God is our Birthright, as a result of us being believe is to be. Then led by the spirit that has the question, are we listening then to the spirit? That's the question. We have to ask myself Hendrickson says, this way, it is the cost effective and benefits. Influence with the Holy Spirit, switch the Holy Spirit exercise with the hearts of God's children whereby. They are being directed. And they are being enabled more and more to crush the power of the indwelling sin and to walk in the ways of God.

That's what he brings out and to walk in the ways of God's to do with. Watch this, he says here, he says Commandments freely and cheerfully in this way we win. Not not by obeying imposing a long Christians who are weak or fearful the position in Christ. What is by yielding to the spirit that you and I win? Is that beautiful? In other words what the Lord brings to my attention is is that when we yield to the Spirit by default the flesh, losses by unit to the Spirit by default what happens, our wind powered and therefore we don't live under the law but we live in Liberty and freedom. Praise the Lord. Thank you Jesus. And so and so we need to understand something here. We have three things that Paul is totally remember. He says that, that, that we need to walk in the spirit. Watch this, he gives us a command, you toast, the conflict, and he chose to the conquest to command this. Walk in the spirit, the conflict we have, is the water Flash versus the spirit and the conquest to win is the war over the flesh. As we deal with it in the spirit, you know, every so often You know, back doing the time back when I was growing up. what would happen is it is it is as we are, as we were training as a Cadet, There would be a large field in football, stadium. Filled with Cadets and different. Could that cause from all over the DC, Maryland, Virginia area. Never forget this and you will see platoons or you would see squadrons and walking all over the field. And, and you would hear all these voices, calling out, Cadence's, and calling out commands. But I can still hear the voice today of George Clinton Smith. The Third, Sing to us continue to March. Continue to March all the voices were around us, but he was still calling out continue to March and because we had been trained to be obedient to his command. We were able to stay in step with the rest of our platoon. You know, that's what we have to do today. We have to listen to the Holy Spirit and we have to yield to him in order for us to take advantage of all the things that God has given to us by way of his spirit. And when we do that, guess what happens? We continue to be in step with the spirit, going to give you three things and after this will close out number one, if you are doing the right thing, it is almost always prevents you from doing the wrong thing. Let me say that again. If you are doing the right thing it almost always present prevent you from doing the wrong thing. And I still think that that Paul brings out here. You see if you do it. If you're, if you're following the dictates of the Holy Spirit, you can't be following the dictates of the flesh for number 2. If your emotions or ego, is causing you to do something, then the flesh is winning. So if you're, if you, if you are causing yourself to do something or what you're doing is generated by your flesh, about your ego, then more than likely was happening is is this that the spirit leading you? That's you leading you or Worse. The devil is leading you Number three. If you if you hear the promptings of your heart that says do this or do that and you know, it's God, that's telling you to do it, or don't do it. If he says don't do it, Because in doing so guess what? You keep in step. With the spirit that you might be here today and you might be listening somewhere, I don't know. You might be listening somewhere, but one of the things that you need to know is is that in order for you to get in step with the spirit? The first thing you have to do is get in step with the Sun. In the way that you do that. If you simply ask him to be your lord and savior, you know, Jesus says I stand at the door and knock If any man hear my voice and I'll come in and I'll sub with him. He and my father, you don't need to understand that that that, that individual, who asked the Lord Jesus, to be the Lord and Savior guess what? He's promised. That he would do. What he says, it's simply as this. He says look who's ever called upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. You know what, what he say, what he did say, he didn't say that you be saved after you stop smoking. He didn't say, you'll be safe after you stop drinking. He didn't say, you'll be, you'll be saved after you stop doing anything because it's not depending upon you. You wasn't at your safe is depended upon him. And he or she that has a son that has life and he was, she that does not have a son, have not life. So the most important step that you can make right now as a step toward the lord Jesus, and ask him, if he just asked me to be your safe. It would you do that with me? I'm going to prayer And you can pray that prayer with me. And if you do that, you know, you can drop me a line. Look at the end of the video, and if you see my email address, you can send it to me. Just say, hey, look except the Lord Jesus Christ, and I need some materials and I promise, I'll get them to you. You say? Lord Jesus. I am a sinner. Forgive me. My sin coming to my heart. Take over my life and make me depressed. You want me to be Lord Jesus, I asked it today, amen. You know, if you said that prayer, then today you became a child of God and you made the first and most important stuff that you can make in your life. And so my prayer is, is that after this that you were to continue to keep in step, not only with this song but also with the spirit Butter spray. Father in Heaven. God, we thank you so much, we pray. Oh God that you was only you can we continue to Father work in the lives of those individuals that have heard this message. Father and pray God for that individual, that has accepted Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. We pray for all of that. To the, to the Greek, to the end. Father, that they would. I follow you, and be faithful and loyal guy, and find. You be faithful Father Day on that blessed day. Lord, that he meet you face-to-face. They hear you say, Well, done, probably after the matchless name of Jesus. Amen. What will love it? We are almost finished with this particular series strides toward freedom, and my prayers.
