Jesus’ Farewell
Jesus’ Farewell
Going away to prepare a place
you will do greater works than I
I and my Father are 1
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, in order that he may be with you forever—
Yet a little time and the world will see me no longer, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
Jesus will give us His Peace
The world will hate you, expel you, kill you
But the Holy Spirit will convict men
The Holy Spirit will teach you about the Church age, Prophecy about the next kingdom, and Heaven
Context
Context
Jesus is going away, to the Father; to prepare us a place
They will be hated and persecuted
Holy Spirit is coming to be in them
Jesus will teach them things through the Holy Spirit
A Little While
A Little While
another riddle from Jesus
“A little while and you will see me no more, and again a little while and you will see me.
What is He talking about?
So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he is saying to us, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going away to the Father’?” So they kept on saying, “What is this that he is saying, ‘A little while’? We do not understand what he is speaking about!”
Jesus was not specific in what the little while is
is it the time of Jesus death and resurrection?
the time before Pentecost?
the time before the rapture?
our context can lead us to all three possibilities
Jesus knew that they were wanting to ask him, and he said to them, “Are you deliberating with one another about this—that I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? Truly, truly I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will become sorrowful, but your sorrow will change to joy.
there will be a time of sorrow but the sorrow will change to joy
Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life
Joy is the reason for gladness
A woman, when she gives birth, experiences pain because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the affliction, on account of the joy that a human being has been born into the world.
The cause of the sorrow is the baby the source of the joy is the baby
So you also are experiencing sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy from you.
lets look at this in the death and resurrection
Death And Resurrection
Death And Resurrection
the death was a severe blow to the disciples
the agony of their dear friend and teacher
the agony of watching everyone gloat over the killing
Thomas’ bitterness
the two on the road to Emmaus “we thought this was the Messiah”
but after the death Victory over the grave, on the feast of firstfruits
after the resurrection the Joy knowing that God is in charge
eventually they will realize that the death of Jesus was needed for their salvation
Pentecost
Pentecost
the sorrow of seeing Jesus go up in the clouds
struggling for the next few weeks without Jesus or the Holy Spirit in their lives
The holy Spirit who will proclaim Jesus
He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and will proclaim it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he takes from what is mine and will proclaim it to you.
through the Holy Spirit Jesus is with them
Through the Holy Spirit and the Word. Jesus’ death and resurrection becomes real in our lives
the conviction causes us sorrow, over our fate
but joy follows with salvation
the more we know Jesus and His word the more joy we have
Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life
Joy is the reason for gladness
Our Blessed Hope
Our Blessed Hope
we are now living in sorrow times
we have sorrow in our lives
sickness, death, heartache, broken lives, hearts,
persecution,
but we have that blessed hope that we will be with Jesus someday
sometimes our sanctification causes us hurt, but it causes us to be more like Jesus
but when our sanctification is complete..
And on that day you will ask me nothing. Truly, truly I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.
in that day our knowledge will be complete
in that day we will have resurrected bodies, incorruptible bodies
glorified bodies
Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
prayer makes our joy complete
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Let your gentleness be made known to all people. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
anxiousness takes away our joy
everything by prayer
Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life
Joy is the reason for gladness
And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Joy from sorrow
transformed from sorrow
