(Hebrews 3:1–6)
1 And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest.
2 For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God’s entire house.
3 But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself.
4 For every house has a builder, but the one who built everything is God.
5 Moses was certainly faithful in God’s house as a servant. His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later.
6 But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ.
INTRODUCTION:
If you could have anything in life, what would you choose?
A songwriter wrote:
“I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold,
I’d rather have him than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands,
I’d rather be led by his nail-pierced hands.
With this songwriter, I’d say, “Give Me Jesus!”
I. HIS FAITHFULNESS (Hebrews 3:1-2)
I. HIS FAITHFULNESS (Hebrews 3:1-2)
(Hebrews 3:1–2)
1 And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest.
2 For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God’s entire house.
A. We are called to consider his faithfulness.
(Hebrews 3:1)
1 And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest.
1. He was faithful in what the Father commanded.
a) Πιστός = trusty, faithful. (of persons who show themselves faithful in the transaction of business, the execution of commands, or the discharge of official duties.)
b) What are the duties Jesus was faithful in?
(1) Apostle of our Profession
(2) High Priest of our Profession
B. We are clearly pointed to the object of his faithfulness. (Hebrews 3:2)
B. We are clearly pointed to the object of his faithfulness. (Hebrews 3:2)
(Hebrews 3:2)
2 For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God’s entire house.
1. The Object of His obedience was God the Father.
(Philippians 2:8)
8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
2. God the Father appointed Jesus as Savior and Lord.
(Philippians 2:9–11)
9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
II. HIS WORK (Hebrews 3:2-4)
II. HIS WORK (Hebrews 3:2-4)
(Hebrews 3:2–4)
2 For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God’s entire house.
3 But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself.
4 For every house has a builder, but the one who built everything is God.
A. His work is testified in His name (Hebrews 3:1).
A. His work is testified in His name (Hebrews 3:1).
(Hebrews 3:1)
1 And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest.
1. Christ = Χριστός = anointed
2. Jesus = Ἰησοῦς= “Jehovah is salvation”.
a) (Matthew 1:21)
(Matthew 1:21)
21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
3. His work was to be the only anointed Savior of mankind.
B. His work is to be our heavenly Apostle and High Priest (Hebrews 3:1).
B. His work is to be our heavenly Apostle and High Priest (Hebrews 3:1).
(Hebrews 3:1)
1 And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest.
1. Apostle = ἀπόστολος = one sent forth with orders.
2. High Priest = ἀρχιερεύς = Used of Christ because by undergoing a bloody death he offered himself as an expiatory sacrifice to God, and has entered into the heavenly sanctuary where he continually intercedes on our behalf.
C. His work is to build the household of God (Hebrews 3:3-4).
C. His work is to build the household of God (Hebrews 3:3-4).
(Hebrews 3:3–4)
3 But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself.
4 For every house has a builder, but the one who built everything is God.
1. The Bible refers to believers as “the household of faith” or “the household of God”
(Galatians 6:10)
10 Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.
(Ephesians 2:19)
19 So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family.
2. The Lord uses the analogy of a family for the church.
(Ephesians 5:22–6:4)
22 For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord.
23 For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church.
24 As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything.
25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her
26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word.
27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault.
28 In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself.
29 No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church.
30 And we are members of his body.
31 As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”
32 This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one.
33 So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
1 Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do.
2 “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise:
3 If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.
III. HIS POSITION (Hebrews 3:5-6).
III. HIS POSITION (Hebrews 3:5-6).
(Hebrews 3:5–6)
5 Moses was certainly faithful in God’s house as a servant. His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later.

A. He is Lord over the household (Hebrews 3:6).

(Hebrews 3:6)
6 But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ.
1. He is the head of the household of faith.
(Ephesians 5:23)
23 For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church.
2. If He is the head, he calls the shots.
a) It is an issue of obedience or disobedience.
b) Disobedience is rebellion.
(1 Samuel 15:22)
22 But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.
c) Disobedience will be judged.
(1) In the Letters to the Churches in Revelation, The Lord promised to judge the churches who refused to repent and do His will.(Rev. 2-3).
B. He is the keeper of the household (Hebrews 3:6).
B. He is the keeper of the household (Hebrews 3:6).
(Hebrews 3:6)
6 But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ.
1. He is the one who preserves the His people.
(Matthew 16:18)
18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.
2. He is the one who provides for His people.
(Philippians 4:19)
19 And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
3. He is the one who empowers His people.
(Acts 1:8)
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
CONCLUSION:
Illustration: Hymn “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”
Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
Helen H. Lemmel
O soul are you weary and troubled
No light in the darkness you see?
There's light for a look at the Savior
And life more abundant and free.
Through death into life everlasting
He passed, and we follow Him there.
Over us sin no more hath dominion
For more than conquerors we are.
His word shall not fail you, He promised
Believe Him and all will be well.
Then go to a world that is dying
His perfect salvation to tell.
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace
