Sovereignty of God

one of my favorite subjects
how God weaves peoples lives to fulfill His will
John 19:11 LEB
Jesus replied to him, “You would not have any authority over me unless it was given to you from above. For this reason the one who handed me over to you has greater sin.”
in 18 we see the hatred of the Sanhedrin for Jesus
we have talked at length about them
this morning lets look at this man Pilate
Matthew 27:19 LEB
And while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent a message to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much as a result of a dream today because of him.”)
Matthew 27:22–23 LEB
Pilate said to them, “What then should I do with Jesus, the one who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” And he said, “Why? What wrong has he done?” But they began to shout even louder, saying, “Let him be crucified!”
Matthew 27:24 LEB
So Pilate, when he saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but instead an uproar was developing, took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this man. You see to it!”
Pilate did not want to condemn Jesus
Pilate hated the Jews and surely dint want to accommodate them
so why did Pilate do what they wanted

The Sum Of Our Past

who we are what we do what we think is because of our background
the trauma education our interaction with others
our family
struggles easy life etc.
some of the things that happen is down rite evil
and we ask why are you allowing this
Job the richest man in the area. all of his possessions, his children, his health was taken away
He never knew
the conversation in heaven
why me
there was a lot Job did not know
his theology said that the rich were a result of righteousness
if he could get his day in court with God
Job and his friends needed to learn something about God
but a teaching and strong faith in God caused Job to say
Job 1:20–22 LEB
Then Job arose and tore his outer garment and shaved his head; then he fell upon the ground and he worshiped. Then he said, “Naked I came out from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return there. Yahweh gives, and Yahweh takes. Let Yahweh’s name be blessed.” In all this, Job did not sin and did not charge God with wrongdoing.
God directs our paths through life. to accomplish His will
Confessing the Faith: The 1689 Baptist Confession for the 21st Century (V. Divine Providence)
God the good Creator of all things, in His infinite power and wisdom, upholds, directs, arranges and governs all creatures and things, from the greatest to the least, by His perfectly wise and holy providence, to the purpose for which they were created.
He governs according to His infallible foreknowledge and the free and unchangeable counsel of His own will. His providence leads to the praise of the glory of His wisdom, power, justice, infinite goodness and mercy. Confessing the Faith: The 1689 Baptist Confession for the 21st Century (V. Pilate’s Past

so what made Pilate crucify Jesus
even though every thing told him not to
lets look at the history of the region
in 4 BC Herod the great was over the whole area
he then broke it up into 3 smaller areas and gave them to his sons
Archelaus ruled the area of Judea and Samaria.
he ruled with extortion and tyranny, so the Jews petitioned Rome to replace him
so Augustus in AD 4, sent its first governor with troops to Israel
troops were needed because the Jews were a rebellious crowd
Pilate took over in Ad 26
we don’t know his history before he took over
but there was contempt for the Jews,
the first time Pilate came to Jerusalem...
the soldiers came with him and on their colors there was a small bust of the reigning emperor in Rome/ a god
the Jews saw this as a graven image...
followed Pilate back to Caesarea to further confront him...
next
Pilate needed to bring water into Jerusalem...
the money for the project was taken out of the temple treasury
for this there was riots in the streets
he dressed up soldiers as town people and killed a lot of rioters
Next
he made shields made with the image of Tiberius Caesar
the people revolted again
the people sent a request to Tiberius and the request was granted
there was always a battle of wills between Pilate and the people
this stubbornness of Pilate warring with the stubbornness of the people resulted in the confrontation we have here
1689 confession of faith
God molds us into the people we are today
He is the potter we are the clay
Isaiah 64:8 LEB
Yet now Yahweh, you are our father; we are the clay and you are our potter, and we all are the work of your hand.
Romans 9:21 LEB
Or does the potter not have authority over the clay, to make from the same lump a vessel that is for honorable use and one that is for ordinary use?
Judas was for a specific task
Saul the tormentor of the early church was for a specific task
Born a Roman for protection
Got the best education
had a quest for knowledge
had the best teachers
Knowing this lets go to the trial

The Trial

we saw before that Pilate wanted to acquit Jesus
found no reason to condemn Him to death
John 19:4 LEB
And Pilate came outside again and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing him outside to you, so that you will know that I find no basis for an accusation against him.”
John 19:5 LEB
Then Jesus came outside wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, and he said to them, “Behold the man!”
Pilate was hoping for the crowd to be satisfied
John 19:6 LEB
So when they saw him, the chief priests and the officers shouted, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate said to them, “You take him and crucify him! For I do not find a basis for an accusation against him.”
John 19:7 LEB
The Jews replied to him, “We have a law, and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself out to be the Son of God!”
John 19:8–10 LEB
So when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid, and he entered into the governor’s residence again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not give him an answer. So Pilate said to him, “Will you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you, and I have authority to crucify you?”
John 19:11 LEB
Jesus replied to him, “You would not have any authority over me unless it was given to you from above. For this reason the one who handed me over to you has greater sin.”
you were put in this place by God
God formed the man Pilate for a purpose
gave him the personality
allowed satan to cause him to hate the Jews
through Pilate’s whole background he was moulded into the person sitting across from Jesus
John 19:12 LEB
From this point on Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jews shouted, saying, “If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar! Everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar!”
at this point Pilate knew that the people would win another battle
Pilate was afraid of losing his position
John 19:13–16 LEB
So Pilate, when he heard these words, brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat, in the place called The Stone Pavement (but Gabbatha in Aramaic). (Now it was the day of preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour.) And he said to the Jews, “Behold your king!” Then those shouted, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests replied, “We do not have a king except Caesar!” So then he handed him over to them in order that he could be crucified. So they took Jesus,
there are a thousand questions we have for God
