David and Goliath

Do you know the story of David and Goliath?
Every Day the Philistine Army and the Israelite Armies would face each other.
David was sent to bring supplies to his brothers and bring back a report on how the war was going.
He saw Goliath talking bad about the Israelites and their God
This made David mad and he was also interested in the reward the person for faced Goliath and
Defeated him.
So David volunteered to fight Goliath.
The king was over joyed and he tried to put on the kings armor
but it was heavy and didn’t fit him
So David took it off and just wore his normal clothes.
He took his sling and 5 smooth stone.
They lined up
David put his first stone in his sling and swung it round and round
He through the stone at Goliath, hit him and Goliath went down
and David defeated him. Then the full battle started and the Isrealites were the winners that day.
But before the fight. David’s brother
Then his brother saw him and was jealous. He said
1 Samuel 17:28 NIV
28 When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”
Eliab was probably jealous of David
Eliab knew his own strength and size compared to Goliath
And he knew David’s size and strength.
Eliab had no idea what David could do with God’s help
And if David had listened to him, just gone home that day.
God might have never made a hero out of him.
You and I can be God’s hero’s too if we put his will above our bad desires.
Like if someone brings home a box of donuts
you might want to eat them all
but God and your parents, would rather you shared them.
In your life, there will be many times for you to choose between the right thing,
and what you would rather do.
Let’s pray that you learn early to follow God’s instructions
so you can have a good life here, and a great life in heaven with Jesus some day.
Let’s Pray

How far can a man fall in 5 minutes time?

We left off in Mark Chapter 8 where Peter makes the most important declaration of his life.
He said
You are the Messiah
as some translations put it or
You are the Christ
As other translation put it.
And Matthew reports when Peter said this
Jesus replied that
Matthew 16:17 NIV
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
Peter had just spoken word
revealed to him by God
Have you ever been talking, sharing with someone about your walk with Christ and
out of your mouth comes something profound you have never thought of before?
And you find yourself going, where did that come from?
It just might be that those words of wisdom, came from God.
Now we need to be careful and discerning
because as we will see today,
there are other forces in this world that can pop ideas and words into our heads that are
straight from the pit of Hell.
Alright so Peter makes this huge declaration,
speaking for the group that
Jesus is the Christ.
He has been with Jesus long enough to know this is true
And Peter is excited to see the Messiah ushering in God kingdom
and ushering out the Roman kingdom right away.
Then Jesus begins teaching about his death and resurrection.
And for once in his life, Peter doesn’t just blurt out his thoughts
He tries to pull Jesus aside.
Mark 8:32 NIV
32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
But aside wasn’t very much out of the way because Jesus turns and sees all the other disciples, close enough to hear them and he says
Mark 8:33 NIV
33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
Not five minutes ago, Peter’s words were praised, as words from the Father, words from God.
Now he is rebuked strongly with
Get behind me, Satan
What a fall from fame to infamy in less than 5 minutes.
And I am here to warn you and me that
If we are not careful
with our words
what influences we allow in our life
we too can be as unstable as Peter in helping and hurting the cause of Christ.
Give us wisdom father to discern the source of our thoughts and the words of our mouth!
What was wrong with Peter’s desire for Jesus to avoid suffering and death?
It was the lure of Easy Street
It wasn’t the Father’s will
How could Jesus save anyone, His disciples, His followers through all the ages down to you and me
if He took the detour down Easy Street and skipped the cross?
There never would have been an atoning sacrifice, made by a sinless man.
And the way of forgiveness would never have been pioneered for us.
The suggestion that Christ should look out for himself
and skip the suffering
was a selfish thought
straight from hell.
It’s not unlike Satan’s original offer of
power and glory for Jesus if he just worshipped Satan.
That call to Easy Street is one of the most common temptations to sin that we face today.
It’s in the 70’s song,
Love the one your with
That is the Easy Road
Not with the one you love
just love the one your with.
That sentiment is a selfish echo from the pit
and had no regard for promises broken and heart ache this will cause.
Freddie Mac is a mortgage financing company that lost a lot of money because on the way to Easy Street,
they found it easy to lie about their profits.
We can find pathways to easy street
everywhere were work, live and play
It’s our integrity,
our dedication to God and family
that keeps us doing the right thing
and keeps us off Easy Street.

A Fan or a Follower

Let’s look at what Jesus was teaching
right after Peter declared Jesus was the Christ and before
Peter said the wrong thing rebuking Jesus plans.
Mark 8:31 NIV
31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.
What were the four things in Jesus basic plan
1 suffer many things
2 be rejected by the elders
3 be killed
4 Rise again in 3 days.
That is the nutshell of the Gospel as Paul give it in 1 Corinthians 15
1 Corinthians 15:1–8 NIV
1 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
Peter was ready to follow Jesus the messiah in the conquering phase of ministry, the 2nd coming of Christ,
but probably had little or no knowledge of the suffering servant phase of the messiahs ministry.
He probably couldn’t quote Isaiah 53 which begins
Isaiah 53:1–3 NIV
1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
Peter was either ignorant of those verse in Isaiah 53 and the rest of the chapter or willfully ignored them because they didn't make any sense.

Our Cost of following Jesus

As Peter has opened the door to confessing Jesus is the Christ,
Jesus because teaching two things
His suffering, which Peter tried to rebuke Jesus for and
The cost of following Jesus.
This turning point is where people move from Fan of Jesus to Follower of Jesus.
This is what Jesus said about the cost.
Mark 8:34–38 NIV
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
Jesus taught self denial
the opposite of heading for Easy Street
He taught that only in loosing our lives,
that is putting our will under God’s will,
is the only way to have a a satisfying life.
He says
Mark 8:36 NIV
36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
At my birth fathers funeral, the pastor said
We are not people who with souls
He said we are souls, who have bodies.
And when our body is worn out we leave it for the next life.
But if Jesus had taken the Easy way out. He couldn’t be our savior
And no mater how much money we make, it would never be enough to redeem our soul
Mark 8:37 NIV
37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
NOTHING
Their is nothing you can give, in exchange for your soul.
Either you are a follower of Christ,
or you are not
If your good deeds out way your bad deeds.
It only means your a decent sinner
not going to heaven
unless of course your a follower of Christ
and because HE didn’t take Easy Street
He went to the Cross and
YOU died to self and followed Him
Then He will redeem you soul.
Jesus also talked about being ashamed of Him.
Mark 8:38 NIV
38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
When I because a Christian,
I wrote my cousin, who had been trying to get me to be a christian for years.
I heard back from him or my aunt, this verse
If anyone is ashamed of me, and my words …the Son of Man will be ashamed of them.
Why did they share that with me?
That’s because, I was avoiding telling my father, Don Wright, that i had become a Christian.
I headed the worning and told my dad that I had become a Christian.
I didn’t want Jesus to be ashamed of me?
Conclusion section

Is Jesus ashamed of you? are you a secret Christian?

It wont last. You won’t last, unless you are willing to tell others about Christ.
Let’s call the children down communion will start soon.

Don’t let the enemy take your place at the table.

I saw this message on Facebook recently.
Don’t let the enemy take your place at the table.
Like Peter
sometimes when we are with others,
we bring the wisdom of God into our talks
His words
His thoughts have become ours and
that’s a good thing.
But if we are not careful
sometimes we let the devil take our place at the table and
we give bad advice
Like the song said,
If you can’t be with the one you love
Love the one your with.
How are you going to live from today forward?
Are you only a fan?
Or are you a follower?
Will you chose today,
to die to self and follow Christ from now on?
If so, please join us for communion this morning.
