Romans 5:6–11 ESV
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

The Setting for this passage

In this passage we will be focused on verse 8 but we cannot divorce that verse from the greater context.

We get a true view of who we are outside of Christ

Scripture uses glowing words to describe us:
helpless: v. 6. You might have weak or without strength but this Greek work literally has the understanding of helpless
ungodly: v. 6
sinners: v. 8
enemies: v. 10

We get a true view of all Christ has accomplished

Christ died for the ungodly: v. 6
Christ died for those who were not good: v. 7
God demonstrated love to sinners: v. 8
God justified sinners: v. 9
God reconciled His enemies: v. 10

What Does This Teach Us About God?

He doesn’t expect us to “clean up” our life and THEN come to him!
While we were helpless (v. 6)
While we were ungodly (v. 6)
While we were sinners (v. 8)
The turning point in our relationship with God happened because He demonstrated/proved/showed His love for us.
We never proved anything to God
The work of Christ, and the Covenant of Redemption, happened because of the love of our God.
It wasn’t a person of the Trinity who loved us and the others followed after - our God is one in purpose, plan, essence, and will.
We are to rejoice in God through Christ (v. 11)
We also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ
The CSB says we boast in God.
This Greek word means, to express an unusually high degree of confidence in someone or something being exceptionally noteworthy.
When is the last time you boasted in God?
Rejoicing can be individual, and ONLY personal
Boasting requires an audience
My challenge to you is:

Boast in the goodness of God found in Christ alone
