1 Peter 5 ESV
So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

1 Peter 5:1–4 ESV
So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
When you hear shepherd the flock, the first person you think of the Pastor.
Now a little Bible Trivia.
Did you know the word “Pastor” only appears once in the Bible but its under the King James Version
Ephesians 4:11–12 KJV 1900
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
Ephesians 4:11–12 ESV
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
Do you see the difference? Pastors in the Bible are referred to by 3 names
Elders, Overseers, and Shepherds.
In this scripture he talks about the Shepherd the Flock of God.
The shepherd’s job was to keep the flock intact, protect it from predators, and guide it to market areas for shearing.
The Pastor’s job is to keep the flock accountable , protect you from Satan, and guide you through the Word.
This scripture shows I have rules as a Pastor right, it correlates with
Titus 1:5–9 ESV
This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
1 Peter 5:5–11 ESV
Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
OK This says younger be subject to your elders. Now you know I am younger than I would say 80% in here. But what this scripture is in reference to is a new believer.
Listen to your elders.
OK so in our congregation we are filled with elders, nothing wrong with that. But this is elders in age. Elders are also referred to as years of being in the Word. You wouldn’t put a new Christian up on the pulpit to teach.
I did not get here alone. I had mentors that helped me get to where I’m at and I am thankful for them every day. But they were wise in the Word and helped me with navigating through scripture. The number one person that helped in this place was my father.
Humble - having or showing a modest or low estimate of one’s own importance.
In his last days, I have a feeling he knew. He knew before my mother, brothers and sister and I knew. But during that time his faith didn’t waiver. He knew where he was going and he didn’t worry because he knew God has his family.
He suffered only a little bit, but when he went to heaven, he was restored, confirmed, strengthened, and established by our Lord Savior Jesus Christ.
We need to stand firm in our faith.
So the final Greetings of 1 Peter
1 Peter 5:12–14 ESV
By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
We stand firm on the Word of God.
This church suffered in 2020. But in 2021, First Southern Baptist Church is restoring the legacy of sharing the word to the community of Pahrump, we Strengthening in numbers, and God is establishing us to carry out His Will.
