John the Baptist’s father, Zacharias prophesied of Jesus and his son.
He called the messenger of the covenant, a horn of salvation
A horn signifies honor, plenty, and strength.
A horn of salvation – an honorable and mighty Savior.
This Savior rescues his people from their enemies, shows mercy remembering the covenant, and enables his people to live and serve him without fear.
Zacharias prophesied about his son, John.
John would be a prophet of God
John would prepare the way for the messenger of the covenant
He was to prepare the way of salvation through the forgiveness of sins
Mercy of God through the covenant
Sun to give light to those living in darkness
Guide into the way of peace
Zacharias referred to the light from heaven in Malachi
Intense light reveals imperfections
Refining fire – high temperatures used in smelting; separating what is desirable from the waste/scrap/slag.
Purifying Soap – washes and assists in scrubbing away stains.
Jesus, the messenger of the covenant, the light from heaven, who brings the refining and purifying.
This is about preparing hearts and lives for the message of covenant peace and coming kingdom of God.
Sometimes, our messages get lost on their way to the receiver.
When we speak or text someone and expect to get our point across.
Often, we can’t make a connection, and when we do, we may not be understood.
Sometimes, we need to have previous knowledge of what we are talking about to understand what is being communicated.
Like, COVID-19 risks and precautions, or the impact of a disagreement.
We want to understand, be understood, and understand ourselves.
When we can’t or won’t understand ourselves, we cannot understand others.
Not being at peace within ourselves can lead us to misunderstand or despise others.
There can be no peace with others unless we are ourselves at peace.
As people of God:
We desire to live in peace with ourselves and others, including God.
We desire to be rescued from our enemies.
We desire to serve without fear.
We desire to hear from a perfect messenger of the covenant of peace.
The messenger of the covenant, Jesus is the refiner and purifier that Zacharias spoke of.
“The Messenger” is exemplified only in Jesus, but all other faithful messengers speak of his refining and purifying through repentance and forgiveness in salvation.
As blemished metal or clothes:
As metal submitted for refining, or clothing submitted for purifying (cleansing), so we are to submit ourselves in humility through repentance that we might be forgiven, this is preparation for salvation.
Just like rusting metal or used and soiled clothing, we are continually affected by the world around us, and we may succumb to the corruption or stain of our temptations.
We continually need to avail ourselves of the “tender mercy of our God” through repentance and forgiveness.
Through these mercies, we enabled to see the light of God shining in the darkness.
The peace that we receive through forgiveness enables us to extend that mercy to others.
This is how we become instruments of God’s peace, so that, all people can see God’s salvation.
