I. Introduction

We have declared to you the Real Meaning of Christmas in our advent series which began with our proclamation of the Birth of the Savior from the apostle Matthew’s gospel. Pastor Barry illuminated for us that this Savior born so many years ago is and shall ever be worshipped! Pastor Chris showed us in the Apostle John’s letter, 1 John, that it was the Love of the Father that caused Him to send Christ into the world.

As we come to a conclusion of this series about the Real Meaning of Christmas, we visit a very familiar passage in the apostle John’s gospel. Written between 80–85 AD, the apostle wrote His gospel so that his readers would understand who Jesus really is and believe in Him. As we celebrate Christmas, it is apparent that gift giving is central to our traditions. As we dive into this brief passage today, let us not miss how the apostle John characterizes God as the greatest Giver who gave the greatest Gift!

II. God gave

John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

A. He loved the world

Ephesians 2:4 ESV
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

B. God gave His only Son

C. Whoever ‘believes’ shall not perish.

D. He gives eternal life to perishing people.

John 3:17 ESV
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

III. God did not send His Son to condemn the world.

John 3:17 ESV
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

A. Grace

B. Salvation

IV. The reason for condemnation

John 3:18–20 ESV
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.

A. Whoever believes is not condemned.

B. Unbelievers are already condemned for not believing in His name.

1. light has come into the world.

2. people loved the darkness rather than the light because of their own evil works

3. people hate the light, don’t approach it, so as not to be exposed by it

V. How will you respond this Christmas season?

John 3:21 ESV
21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
Romans 10:14 ESV
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?
