Title: Faith to Be Healed
Text: & Isaiah 53:1-5
Illust: The other week my Nephew broke his elbow in the playground at Pre School. He was taken to the local hospital 7& they were tole there was a 5 hour wait. 5 Hours – If you have ever fronted up to Casualty at Woden, you know that it is always busy and always there are long waits – Problem is that a lot of people have some form of sickness, an illness that moderately or severely effects their ability to function and enjoy life. – a lot of sick people. – A shortage of Doctors.
I. Provision
A. Prophecy
i. Our text is a prophecy, this is a picture written by Isaiah some 760 years before the events he foretold with such accuracy would be fulfilled. – In the Old Testament, there are over three hundred references to the messiah that would all be fulfilled in Jesus.
ii. Ps 22: is another Messianic Psalm that clearly portrays many of the events as they occurred at the crucifixion
Psalm 22:14 I am poured out like water, And all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me. (NKJV)
iii. We see in some very simple words a picture of some of what Jesus endured that day.
Mark 15:15 So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified. (NKJV)
iv. He was scourged : A scourge (from Italian scoriada, from Latin excoriare = "to flay" and corium = "skin") is a whip or lash, especially a multi-thong type used to inflict severe corporal punishment
B. Provision
i. In our text vs.5 is the key to the provision made on the cross. He was beaten, He was scourged, His back was flayed open, the blood would have streamed from the mess that it had become and it is this blood that makes the way for us to be healed & vs.5
ii. For when Jesus blood was shed on that cross, He fulfilled all of the righteous requirments of the law of God. He in effect paid the price for our sin. That includes the sickenss that assaults us
Matthew 14:14 And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. (NKJV)
iii. This is how & why He could give us the commission to preach the Gospel and to heal the sick
Mark 16:18 they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” (NKJV)
II. Faith
A. Have Faith
i. Truth this evening is that Jesus purchased your pardon from sin on the cross when He gave His life in your place. You accept that by Faith and you are saved. Need to grasp that it was a full & complete pardon from sin and the effects of sin.
ii. That includes sickness. To be accepted and applied to your life in the same way – through Faith.
iii. Simply you realise that “hey if Jesus died for my sins and my sickness then I need to accept the healing that is offered and claim it as my own.”
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (NKJV)
B. Step Out in Faith
i. Need to understand that the will of God is that you be healed and that you are well.
F.F. Bosworth: “It is impossible to boldly claim by faith a blessing which we are not sure God offers, because the power of God can be claimed only where the will of God is known … Faith begins where the will of God is known.”[1]
ii. You can know that God wants you to be well, to be healed because this is according to our text one of the reasons that Jesus died on that cross. – Jesus made it known that it was His will to heal the sick.
Luke 5:12-13 12 And it happened when He was in a certain city, that behold, a man who was full of leprosy saw Jesus; and he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” 13 Then He put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately the leprosy left him. (NKJV)
iii. Faith if it is to truly be faith needs to be acted upon. You need to step out in Faith. That means that you claim the healing that is rightfully yours. That you will come to Jesus to be healed.
James 5:13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. (NKJV)
iv. Need to pray, need to be prayed for:
James 5:14-15 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. (NKJV)
III. Healing
A. Be Healed
i. If you do that, if you make the step then God will see & heal you
ii. Healing is available in this place this evening as that is what Jesus came for, it is one of the main benefits of salvation – That we can be healed.
