“Anointing Uncovered”
Luke 3:16 “John answered them all, “I baptize you with water.
But someone mightier than I is coming.
I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals.
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
This past Sunday the message was on all three of this evening’s passages, and we discovered that oftentimes what God decrees is different than what our eyes see.
This evening, however, our focus will be upon this one verse — John said, “I baptized you with water.
But someone mightier than I is coming.
I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals.
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

John’s reference to “fire” (πυρί) in connection with the pouring out of the Holy Spirit was to a purifying fire which burns away all unholiness (Isa 6:6, 7; 1 Pe 1:7).
The tongues of fire on the heads of the disciples on Pentecost were certainly a symbol of this holy fire.
