Week #2
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

When You Pray . . .
Do not pray like the hypocrites
Pray in your room
According to Christ’s example, the time of our prayers is not limited to a specific time of the day, but instead is throughout the day. Morning before the sun arises, mid-day as we need wisdom to handle circumstances. In the evening and at all times (pray without ceasing) Paul instructs us in 1 Th 5.16-18 “16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Some manuscripts say, “will reward you openly”
What are the blessings/rewards that we will receive? Is there a list somewhere? Is it a guaranteed return on investment? Does this mean when we pray privately, in secret we are certain to receive exactly what we ask for?
Jer 17.5-9 “5 Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”
Rom 8.35-37 “35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
Don’t pray like the Gentiles . . . don’t aimlessly babble
Don’t pray like the Gentiles . . . don’t aimlessly babble
7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
There is a clear difference between this and repeatedly asking God the same request, with legitimate and heartfelt concern.
