Baptized by Fire

Luke 3:15–17 NRSV
15 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16 John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
Luke 3:21–22 NRSV
21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”
Intro —>
—> Do you remember your baptism?
—> I ask that because we in the UMC believe in 1 baptism. Whether you were baptized as an infant or later on in what is known as a believers baptism. We believe that one baptism is sufficient.
—> So when I ask the question “do you remember your baptism?” there can be multiple answers, some will remember their baptism if it happened later in life.
—> I was baptized when I was 18, and I still don’t have a clear memory of it. I do remember my brother’s baptism which was the first baptism I preformed 4 or 5 years later.
—> I remember the baptisms I preformed at Gladewater.
—> And I long for the day I can celebrate that sacred moment here at Longview FUMC.
—> But at the end of the day the reality is, baptism is not about simply getting wet.
—> The outward act isn’t as important as the inward commitment
—> John knows this look at his words to the crowd

—> the baptism that John offers was a way to prepare people for Jesus
—> The Jewish people had been “baptizing” people since the institution of the Law of Moses.
—> How does Jesus baptize?
—> Holy Spirit
—> Fire
The Holy Spirit is given, poured out during baptism.
The Holy Spirit is left after the water is dry.
The Fire is that of a cleansing, a preparation for what is to come.
Luke 3:21–22 NRSV
