Devoted for Destruction.
This is second Generation Isreal, the last generation had died and was not able to see Gods promise fulfilled and this brand new generation is off to a great start..
The first victory took a march and a shout and the walls came down.
God tells them because this is your first victory all the gold & silver belongs to me and will go into my treasury.
But Achan didn’t believe God to be a man that shalt not lie..
And he took some stuff and hid it in his tent.
That brings us to Chapter 7, The Children of Isreal are going after a small enemy compared to Jericho.
It wouldn’t take as many people to defeat this enemy.
But one problem out of all the obedient people in the crew..
There is always one that doesn’t see it they way God wants it..
Elbow your neighbor and ask them.
(your not the achan of the crew are you)
after wandering for 40 years in the desert waiting for a disobedient generation to die off, Somehow they was still able to bring one that had the same type of spirit that God Killed off.
And One Bad Apple Can Spoil the entire… you know the rest..
Lets explore this Word that is used in this text to determine if we might want to look out for it in Our Lives
To be honest in my time of serving God I found myself loosing to an enemy that was much smaller that the last enemy I defeated.
I’d like to call this the Buster Douglas experience..
Accursed:
Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary (Accursed)
ACCURSED Translation of Hebrew cherem, a technical term in warfare for items captured from the enemy and devoted to God.
“become the Lord’s permanent property”
Lev.
27:21 .
21 But the field, when it goeth out in the jubile, shall be holy unto the LORD, as a field devoted; the possession thereof shall be the priest’s
“put a curse on … destroyed” (Judg.
1:17).
REB uses “dedicated” (Lev.
27:21); “devoted” (Lev.
27:28–29); “utterly destroy” (Num.
21:2); “put to death under solemn ban” (Deut.
2:34); “exterminate” (Deut.
7:2); “destroyed” (Josh.
2:10); “put to death” (Judg.
21:11).
NRSV consistently uses “devoted” and “utterly destroyed” to translate cherem, while NASB uses “set apart” and “utterly destroy.”
NIV uses “devoted,” “totally destroyed,” “completely destroyed.”
Israel’s neighbors practiced devoting battle spoils to a god also, as 2 Kings 19:11 shows.
“Accursed” appears in KJV for cherem only in Joshua and in 1 Chron.
2:7.
In Deut.
21:23 and Isa.
65:20 KJV uses “accursed” to translate another Hebrew root, qalal, “to make light of, curse.”
Paul used a technical Greek term, anathema, to call for persons to be put under a holy ban or be accursed
Rom.
9:3 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:
1 Cor.
12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
Gal.
1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
1 Cor.
16:22 If anyone does not love the Lord [does not have a friendly affection for Him and is not kindly disposed toward Him], he shall be accursed!
Our Lord will come!
(Maranatha!)
2. To Be accursed means it belongs to God! or its “become the Lord’s permanent property”
The Law Of First Mention:
The law (or principle or rule) of first mention is a guideline that some people use for studying Scripture.
The law of first mention says that, to understand a particular word or doctrine, we must find the first place in Scripture that word or doctrine is revealed and study that passage.
The reasoning is that the Bible’s first mention of a concept is the simplest and clearest presentation; doctrines are then more fully developed on that foundation.
So, to fully understand an important and complex theological concept, Bible students are advised to start with its “first mention.”
15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain cultivated the ground.
3 When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the LORD. 4 Abel also brought a gift—the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock.
The LORD accepted Abel and his gift, 5 but he did not accept Cain and his gift.
This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected.
6 “Why are you so angry?” the LORD asked Cain.
“Why do you look so dejected?
7 You will be accepted if you do what is right.
But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out!
Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you.
But you must subdue it and be its master.”
8 One day Cain suggested to his brother, “Let’s go out into the fields.”*
And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother, Abel, and killed him
What we see In the Beginning,
God makes it clear what he has given man and what belongs to him
God Makes it clear that he wants his first and he wants the best
God also make its clear that not honoring what he is asking results in Death..
