Hebrews 2:1–4 ESV
1 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
Thesis/ Central Idea:
Do not return to your life before Jesus for He is more significant than your past.
Introduction:
The Holy Spirit moves the Hebrew writer to reveal to its recipients that Jesus is greater than the Prophets and the Angels. The audience of Hebrews was mostly former Jews now Christian who were considering going back to Judaism, due to persecution and a misunderstanding of who Jesus was. Their misunderstanding was on the basis of how to relate to Him. Was he just one of the Prophets or was He an Angel?
The Holy Spirit then moves His human instrument to reveal that for awhile Jesus, who is greater than the Angels, then took a position lower. This would be a difficult concept for Jews. Although Angels are Super-Natural beings, they are not divine. Hebrews then goes on to explain the purpose for Jesus lowering Himself, which was an effort to achieve salvation for those in mankind who would believe in His name.
[So it is revealed to us that we must…]

Pay much closer attention

Let’s be clear, returning to Judaism is to leave Jesus as Lord and Messiah.
Scripture has been fulfilled by Jesus as the Messiah and we have been warned from long ago to pay close attention to God’s word.
Deuteronomy 4:9 ESV
“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—
From the Old Testament mankind was given “Shadows and Types” of Jesus our Lord and Savior, which are previews of what is come.
Many of these types were confirmed in the New Testament.
Here are just a few...
Shadows and Types of Christ
Adam (Romans 5:12-21, 1 Corinthians 15:22-45)
Moses (Acts 3:22, Hebrews 3:1-5)
The Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7, John 1:29, 1 Peter 1:19-20)
The bronze serpent (John 3:14)
Jonah (Matthew 12:39-41)
High priest (Hebrews 2:17; 4:15–16; 5:10)
Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:1-3; 15-17, Hebrews 6:20)
There are many more Shadows and Types of Christ in the Old Testament
given for our instruction through endurance and encouragement of the scripture we might have this hope, that is Jesus.
[Closer attention to God’s Word can happen when you teach it to others…]
Deuteronomy 32:46–47 ESV
he said to them, “Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today, that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law. For it is no empty word for you, but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.”
We must draw closer to what we hear from God’s Word and pay close attention that our faith be renewed.
[Many forget the word due to the cares of this world. Our position should be like Jesus explains about the different types of soil…]
Luke 8:15 ESV
As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.
Paying close attention will aid you in bearing fruit for the Kingdom.
The scriptures predicted and were fulfilled by Jesus, who is higher than the Angels and His word must be recieved with great magnitude
It is Jesus who has been exalted to the right hand of the Father and His Word carries authority greater than the Angels
[We must pay close attention to what we hear because there will be retribution for the disobedience…]

Transgression receives retribution

[Consider 1st Corinthians 10 that is a New Testament scripture considering Old Testament subjects…]
1 Corinthians 10:5–12 ESV
Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
The example here is not to be followed
The instruction requires us to pay close attention
It appears that we still haven’t learned our lesson and desire evil as they did
We have arrived at a point were we call evil good and good evil
We don’t know the way to go, so we had better pay close attention to the word of scripture and what it’s trying to tell us
To miss the message, is to miss eternal life with our Creator and Savior.
[[We have examples that need to be heeded…]

How shall we escape?

Destiny in the eternal is a choice
In this world it is determined where that eternal place will be,
peace or chaos,
comfort or strife,
Abraham’s Bosom or Torment
Heaven or Hell
Men choose their destination,
if you’re life in this world is a rejection of the redemptive nature of one who knows his maker, provider, and savior
then your after life will be absent your maker, provider and savior
because you have chosen to reject Him and be all those things for yourself
Hebrews 12:25 ESV
See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.
Love demands a choice
Choice demands Judgement or Discernment
Judgement begins with us...
1 Peter 4:17–18 ESV
For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”
Saints will scarcely be saved, so pay close attention to what you have heard from the word of God
Examine the claims of the Bible and pay close attention to what it reveals
For what it reveals is life and death for the souls of men
Conclusion:
Pay much closer attention to this word, we recieved it from the authority that comes from on High
From the Old Testament to the New we have been given a confirmed preview of who Jesus is and what He means for mankind
God is not slack concerning His promises
A day is coming when the deed of man will receive their just reward
I pray that you live your life as a judgement that will escape the sentencing at the end of this world
receiving the eternal peace and comfort which comes to those who know Jesus for the pardon of their sins
How will you escape o sinner when the Lord returns?
Will you create your own Heaven?
Have you been able to create it on earth
If not them you will not be able to create it after this earth perishes
Come to Jesus who died that you might live...
