I. Jesus’ Dreadful Prediction vs. 27-31

A. Jesus quotes Zec. 13:7, and tells the remaining disciples that they will abandon Him.
B. They all deny it especially Peter. Usually, the one who cries the loudest did it!
C. Imagine the mixed emotions that this stirred. The disciples were confused and concerned about Jesus. Jesus was in agony mentally and spiritually and concerned about the disciples.

II. Jesus’ Dreadful Prayer vs. 32-42

A. Jesus leaves 8 disciples in a certain place. He takes His inner circle to pray and then goes by Himself. Some people you just trust more, but some burdens can only be between you and God.
B. The disciples had seen Jesus almost every day for 3 1/2 years. They've seen Him, happy, sad, angry, and any emotion, but this one. This should have been enough for them to stay up, and keep watch. Heb. 12:2
Hebrews 12:2 NASB95
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
C. When's the last time, we've prayed this prayer, and really meant it? Heb. 9:22
Hebrews 9:22 NASB95
And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
D. Notice, Jesus calls him by his old name. Peter was acting like his old self. Peter (the spiritual person) was weak, but Simon (the flesh) is weak. We cannot face our temptations, and trials on our own. When we do, we set ourselves up for some really hard times. We need to humble ourselves, submit to Yahweh, and be on alert, for where we are weak. I Pet. 5:6-9
1 Peter 5:6–9 NASB95
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.
E. There comes a time, when you must face the situation at hand. The question is, are you prayed up, and prepared, or like the disciples you are asleep physically and spiritually.

III. Jesus’ Dreadful Placement vs. 43-52

A. This would have shocked the disciples, so bad that they were probably speechless. No one suspected Judas, until it happened, then they realize how terrible he was, when no one was looking. (Ravi Zacharias ex).
B. What Jesus predicted came true. The young man was probably Mark.
C. While it was predicted, it happened because they were not watchful.
D. We need to be watchful, and remember, this was Thursday, it seemed bleak, but Sunday was coming. A better day is coming!
