Proper things for sound doctrine

Titus is being given instructions for the church at Crete and we are able to learn and apply the instructions given to help us to grow a healthy church for the Lord.
Titus 2:1 NASB95
1 But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine.
What is the instruction given (Tit2:1)?
This is doctrine that is fitting, that is spiritually healthy and wholesome that will equip and enable the body to grow.
Previously we have looked at Older men, and Older women
Titus 2:2–3 NASB95
2 Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good,
Qualities like being temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, love, in perseverance. Then went on to the women to be reverent, don’t gossip, or drink much wine, be a teacher of what is good.
(Transition) - So we have the sound doctrine, we have the people, older, younger, now we have the reason and the application what we are looking at today and next week.
Titus 2:4–5 NASB95
4 so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.
Gleaning from the scripture (Tit2:4-5)
What are they (older women) supposed to do (v.4-5)?
What is the reason seen in (v.5)?
(Transition) Having these things in mind, here is the hope for this morning that we will be looking at, very similar at what we looked at with older men.
Conduct becoming younger women.
Biblical examples of godly younger women.

Conduct becoming younger women

I think we have defined conduct before, but in case not, here is definition:the manner in which a person behaves, especially on a particular occasion or in a particular context. So conduct is all about application!
Conduct becoming of a younger woman by instructions of the Word and older women by teaching and by example.
To love their husbands and their children. (Tit2:4-5)
This is Greek word “philandros” and it is the only time used in the N.T. and it is defined as
5362 phílandros (from 5384 /phílos, "loving friend" and 435 /anḗr, "husband, the male companion of a wife") – properly, the special affection of a woman for her life-time mate (husband), embracing him as her "calling" (stewardship) from God (used only in Tit 2:4).
Younger women who are married are to have a special affection for husband, given from God, and in turn affection for children too.
Now, this should be natural, right? But look at this
Romans 1:31 NASB95
31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;
Without understanding that it is a gift from God that you are given stewardship over, it could turn to be unloving, unmerciful, couldn’t it?
But hold on, this is something that can be taught by older women, to have understanding and application.
So, if anyone, lacks in this area, again our focus is on younger women this morning, it can be relearned in a biblical fashion.
Next in looking at (v.3; this time using NKJV)
Titus 2:3 NKJV
3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things—
This goes hand in had with (v.2) addressed to older men, but here in (v.3) says likewise so it is the same type of reverent, chase behavior
Titus 2:2–3 NKJV
2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things—
Discrete is translated from temperate
Which links with sober, temperate and of a sound mind.
The Complete word bible dictionary says
“Self-disciplined in one’s freedom, self-restrained in all passions and desires.”
Younger women are to be discrete, reverent, in behavior - Greek word “sophron”
Younger women are to be chaste (Greek word “hagnos.” )
This means Pure from carnality, modest (Thayer)
This means pure in heart and in life (Barnes)
I love how Gill put’s it, let me show you.
“In body, in affection, words and actions, having their love pure and single to their own husbands, keeping their marriage bed undefiled.”
Now as for the younger unmarried woman.
1 Corinthians 7:34 NASB95
34 and his interests are divided. The woman who is unmarried, and the virgin, is concerned about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and spirit; but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
She is to be holy both in body and spirit!
Younger women are to be workers in home (homemakers) (v.5).
Homemakers is Greek word “oikouros”
TCWD defines it as “a keeper at home, one who looks after domestic affairs with prudence and care.”
Barnes states “Attentive to their domestic concerns, or to their duties in their families.”
Flip your bible over to Pro31. Lets do a quick survey of a virtuous woman, an excellent wife.
She is of great worth (v.10)
Her husband has total trust in her (v.11)
She works with her hands in delight (v.13)
She gets up to meet the needs of the family (v.15)
She is charitable to others (v.20)
She is attentive to make sure her family has what is needed (v.21-22)
She looks well, looks out for the household, she is not idle (v.27)
The wife’s first duty is to home and family, though many work outside of the home if capable, but not negligent of the home.
Younger women are to be kind (good) Greek word “agathos.”
TCWD “In respect to operation or influence on others. (i.e. useful, beneficial, profitable).”
As a young woman carries out her duties, some being trained, taught, by older women, examples, she is to do so with goodness and kindness.
Younger women are to be obedient to their husbands. Greek word (hupotasso). (Tit2:5; Eph5:22; Col3:18; 1Pt3:1); also ref Gal3:28, 1Pt3:7)
Some versions like the NASB say’s subject to husbands. It means “to subject oneself, place oneself in submission.” TCWD
Biblical examples of obedience, submissive, being subject to:
Ephesians 5:22 NASB95
22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
But if you were to look back one verse it says Eph5:21 “21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.”
Colossians 3:18 NASB95
18 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
So in Ephesians do it as to the Lord, in Colossians it is fitting in the Lord.
1 Peter 3:1 NASB95
1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives,
In Peter it is so it can be a salvation thing!
Yes there is equality spiritually between men, women, slave, free.
Galatians 3:28 NASB95
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Thought better to give you the verse, for this verse is taken and twisted to mean something other than what it says (expand briefly)
Submission is a virtue that is enjoined to all Christians like mentioned in (Eph5:21) and maybe even consider
1 Peter 5:5 NASB95
5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
Examples, everyone loves good examples and the bible is full of them, so now may we take some time and look at some.

Biblical Examples

We are simply Christians studying God’s word, so may we turn to it for some examples for the younger women.
Hannah (1Sam1:1-28, 2:1-10)
(Insert picture of Hannah here)
The wife of Elkanah, loved but barren, the other wife (Peninnah) was mean (treated her bitterly) because Elkanah loved her, but was barren where she had given Elkanah children.
Hannah prayed by the door of the temple, prayed for a child, prayed would give child back to the Lord if blessed with one.
Samuel was born, weened and given back to the Lord just as she had promised.
1 Samuel 1:24 NASB95
24 Now when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with a three-year-old bull and one ephah of flour and a jug of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord in Shiloh, although the child was young.
1 Samuel 1:25–26 NASB95
25 Then they slaughtered the bull, and brought the boy to Eli. 26 She said, “Oh, my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you, praying to the Lord.
1 Samuel 1:27–28 NASB95
27 “For this boy I prayed, and the Lord has given me my petition which I asked of Him. 28 “So I have also dedicated him to the Lord; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.
Hannah was a woman of faith a woman of her word whose life was dedicated to family and in service to the Lord, even when it was very costly.
Esther (Est2:8-17, 4:13-16)
Insert picture of Queen Esther
A beautiful girl named Hadassah, an orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai (2:7)
She became a wife of of Ahasuerus, king of Persia
Who risked her life for the sake of her people
Esther 4:13–14 NASB95
13 Then Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, “Do not imagine that you in the king’s palace can escape any more than all the Jews. 14 “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?”
Esther 4:15–16 NASB95
15 Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai, 16 “Go, assemble all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maidens also will fast in the same way. And thus I will go in to the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.”
She was willing to put it all out there, to suffer and even perish if that is what the Lord wanted. And she was God’s providence for preserving God’s people who would bring about the Messiah.
Mary (Lk1:26-38; Mt12:46-50)
Insert Mary mother of Jesus picture here
A teenager who was a favored one in the Lord whom the angel announced what was going to happen.
While yet having questions, not fully understanding stated this.
Luke 1:38 NASB95
38 And Mary said, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
She came to understand who He was and who His true family was
Matthew 12:46–47 NASB95
46 While He was still speaking to the crowds, behold, His mother and brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to Him. 47 Someone said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to You.”
Matthew 12:48–49 NASB95
48 But Jesus answered the one who was telling Him and said, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Behold My mother and My brothers!
Matthew 12:50 NASB95
50 “For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.”
She was present at the crucifixion (Jn19:25) and was with the apostles after the resurrection (Act1:13-14)
She was a woman who reminds us that all our children belong to God (Mark Copeland)
Priscilla (Act18:1-3, 26; Rom16:3-4)
Insert Priscilla picture here
I love Priscilla and her husband Aquila, they are a great example in the scripture, we have a few minutes let me give you some scripture
Acts 18:1–2 GNB
1 After this, Paul left Athens and went on to Corinth. 2 There he met a Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, for the Emperor Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them,
Acts 18:3 GNB
3 and stayed and worked with them, because he earned his living by making tents, just as they did.
So we have this displaced couple who are tentmakers and work along side Paul.
Acts 18:26 GNB
26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him home with them and explained to him more correctly the Way of God.
Priscilla who was by her husbands side in explaining scripture correctly. (expand, not in the assembly, but personally)
They even ended up with an assembly in their house, (Rom16:3-4) and that was common for there was no church buildings to meet in, they met in homes, synagogues, on the beach, etc.
1 Corinthians 16:19 NASB95
19 The churches of Asia greet you. Aquila and Prisca greet you heartily in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.
A woman who opened her home to the work, and service of the Lord. To further the cause of Christ!
(Transition) So we have the teaching, the examples from the bible, think about living examples in your life or are you a living example today of a virtuous woman?
The challenge today to our women, and those who maybe listening is simple.
(Insert Virtuous woman picture here)
Be a woman who loves her husband and children, then, be an example and a teacher to other women too.
Be a woman whose family is not a hindrance in serving the Lord but an opportunity to find ways to serve the Lord.
Be a chase, discreet woman, and yes even a teenager can be, who is humble, modest and is an example of decency and good morals
Be a woman who demonstrates beauty not just on the outside, but on the inside too who is of great value to the kingdom and their family.
SO, like the men we looked at and the older women previously, who can, who will God use today, a woman who dares to follow the Lord!
These are some great instructions for the church in service to the church (the body of believers; and that starts in your home). Be of sound doctrine and service and may we work together to develop a healthy church!
