Introduction
Carol Troyer devoted her life to honoring others…
Romans 12:10… “Outdo one another in showing honor.”
What does it mean to honor one another?
We “know” this, but we don’t really know this…
What does it mean to honor one another?
What does it mean to honor someone?
The word “honor” literally means “to give weight.”
To honor someone, then, is to give weight or to grant a person a position of respect and authority in your life (Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology).
What is the actual command in Romans 12:10?
What does it mean to “outdo one another?”
Philippians 2:3… To outdo one another in showing honor means to give more honor than we expect to receive.
Don’t just honor those who will repay you with greater status, position, or recognition.
Who should we honor?
We honor God (1 Tim 1:17).
We honor our parents (Eph 6:1-2).
We honor those who are weaker (1 Cor 12:22-23).
We honor those who are under our care (Matt 20:25-28).
We honor those in authority over us (Heb 13:17).
We honor the governing authorities (1 Pet 2:13-17).
How do we honor one another?
“Honor without action is incomplete; it is only lip service.”
- Sam Hamstra
Don’t seek your own honor (Luke 14:7-11).
You worry about honoring God and others, and let God worry about honoring you.
We honor those who are older or younger (1 Tim 5:1-2).
People learn character through imitation, and for that, we must mix the generations…
Don’t just huddle up with people your own age, but seek out someone in a different season of life and get to know them—they have something of value to offer.
Conclusion: Singing
