Peter has so beautifully and passionately as he opens his letter to a hurting church abroad shown the church in the opening verses the Power of our Salvation as he reminds his readers of God’s Plan of our Salvation from the very beginning. With these two powerful points made he begins his next emphasis with “THEREFORE” in verse 13.
The HOPE of this powerful salvation brought about by God should lead to a response by His church
Today we will look at the Purpose of our Salvation (The “so what” approach to these truths)
We are called to action
We should consider our conduct in light of the cost
We should have a focused mindset
Peter changes his approach in the following verses from that of celebration and praise that results in encouraging his readers through the difficult times, trials and sufferings to a TONE OF ENGAGEMENT… do not wallow church, there is a task to be accomplished, a life to be lived… Listen to this tone as we read 1 Peter 1:13-16
1 Peter 1:13–16 NASB95
Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

A Call to Action

Peter does not simply suggest this as a good idea he is declaring to the church, it’s time to get serious about how we live!!!
The church through the ages has read these verses and struggled.
There is the feeling of needing to retreat to accomplish this
Isolate from the world, become a hermit, a monk in a cave far from the world
Church… there is a battle going on.
We do not win battles by isolation
We win, see victory through engagement!
In view of our Salvation Peter lays out a list of commands...
Prepare your minds!
Keep sober!
Set your hope on grace!
Don’t be conformed!
Be holy!
God’s word is clear, you and I have been called to engage in this world for lost souls, pointing them to Christ Jesus through both our words declaring His Truth… and how we interact, behave, and demonstrate we are His to the watching eyes of the world.
PREPARE YOUR MINDS… get your head in the game.
Our minds are a battle ground (input output, what goes in is what comes out!)
Paul would reiterate this in Romans 12:1-2
Romans 12:1–2 NASB95
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
God would declare in Deuteronomy 6:5 and Jesus Himself would reiterate… Matthew 22:37
Matthew 22:37 NASB95
And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
Our walk and relationship with God is NOT a mindless thing rather we are commanded to engage it for action!!!
KEEP SOBER!
Keep clear headed
Rather than allowing our outside circumstances control our thoughts and emotions we are controlled and directed from WITHIN!!! A pure leading of the Holy Spirit!
SET HOPE ON GRACE!
“Fix our Hope” lock it in! COMPLETELY!!
this is the fourth time in his letter Peter has drawn our focus to be on the coming Grace of Jesus Christ!
Keep an eternal mindset… look forward to His coming
1 John 3:3 speaks of this as well… Hope and Holiness go hand in hand
1 John 3:3 NASB95
And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
DON’T BE CONFORMED!
Holiness begins with an intentional mindset… renewing of the mind.
This is done out of OBEDIENCE!!!
Look at the contrast of who we are vs who we were (former lust)
Our identity brings on New Behavior
You and I no longer approach this life in ignorance rather in our renewed thinking we pursue Holiness as Christ rather than conforming to the image of the world… which leads to Peter’s final command here...
BE HOLY!
Once again Peter is referring back to, not a new principle, but quoting the Old Testament in Leviticus 11:44-45 and 20:26
To be holy is simply means: set apart, separated for a special, unique purpose!
Holy Matrimony… separating from their families to join together in marriage commited in an intimate relationship
Holy Scriptures… set apart from any other writings inspired by the Holy Spirit
You and I should live set apart, unique in this world, we should demonstrate a holy behavior,
As His children we represent a New family, a New Name… His Name
As the church we enter into this relationship… taking on the name of our groom
Peter presents these commands for believers and moves on with an If / Then statement addressing our conduct… 1 Peter 1:17-19
1 Peter 1:17–19 NASB95
If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

Consider Our Conduct

IF… you call Him Father (which in turns means we are His children)
There is a relationship, If you have this relationship with Him
He will judge your work… there is an account for what you do or don’t do
THEN… or therefore conduct yourself in fear!
There is to be a reverent fear… Proverbs begins this way as well stating that a life of wisdom is lived out with the reality of who God is and who we are in light of Him.
Our life on earth should reflect this
Why make such a big deal about how we live in this life… isn't it brief anyway?
KNOWING… vs 18 draws us back to a mindset, we should know and understand the… COST!!!
NOT with cheap metals, perishable worthless things that WERE from life past… BUT!
Blood… precious, unblemished, pure, holy, … the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ
For no other reason this should cause us to consider our conduct … Paul would declare to the Corinthians this 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 NASB95
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
At the cost of the only Son of God, you and I are now the temple of the Holy Spirit!
Lisa shared with me her amazement at how often God spoke about how the temple in the old testament should be, look, and function… NOW you and I are the temple of the Holy Spirit and God still wants us to be, look, and function in a holy manner!
1 Peter 1:20-21 close with what are mindset needs to be on and why…
1 Peter 1:20–21 NASB95
For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

A Focused Mindset

Peter wraps it up beautifully...
Reminding his readers of God’s plan before the foundations of the world
How God came and dwelt among mankind
The victory we have because of Christ victory over death
SO THAT!!!… we could place our faith and hope in GOD!
God did not go through all this so we could live for ourselves, indulge in the pleasures of this world, or to have us isolate from all things and all people…
He has called us to something far greater and spectacular… to live holy lives, set apart, as His ambassadors to a lost world, engaging people with the gospel of Jesus Christ!
Church it is high time we engage our minds, focus our thinking on Christ the author and finisher of our faith
Let me close today with a quote from Charles Swindoll:
Our focus must be on Christ because our primary battlefield is the mind. The enemy has his sights set on our minds. If he can get us to focus on something other than the hope we have in Jesus Christ, he will have won the battle; everything else will be just claiming the spoils of war.
I can think of nothing Greater to set my faith and hope in than this great God who we can call Father!
