Life is full of experiences.
From the moment we are born to the day we die we will have experiences.
Experiences are powerful.
This is extremely important for us to understand. to some this is a “no-brainer”.
To others experiences are a necessary evil.
Experiences can shape us for the good or be very detrimental.
We cannot always just think away our experiences.
I believe it is best to integrate our experiences by facing them.
Experiences can be deceiving.
Just because we experience something does not mean it is true nor good, even if it appears that way to begin with.
We must submit experiences to Scripture.
“Theology without experience is sterility, while experience without theology is emotionalism.
True theology is something that also needs to be experienced, and experience needs to be theologically sound;”
-Scot McKnight
Each covenant had a sign.
As we journey through Scripture we see this work in action.
For the faithful Jews the sign of the law and of Abraham was circumcision.
Yet this was not meant to be “permanent”.
God promises in Jeremiah 31.33 that a new day would be coming.
What covenant are you living under?
This is the question of Paul.
You want to go backwards or keep moving forward in faith.
The opposite of “flesh/works” is the Spirit.
Sometimes we see faith being the opposite of works, and in some places it is.
But here the opposite is not our faith but the Spirit.
Abraham is the example of faith.
Jews would trace back to him as the start of the nation.
This was accurate and necessary but incomplete.
To be God’s people is not equivalent with being a good Jew.
God’s people are always people of faith.
Faith in trusting when God speaks He is speaking truth.
Faith that Christ is sufficient in saving us from sin.
Faith that if we submit to the Spirit we are submitting to life.
Does God save only certain types of people?
Does God only use “old” or “new” ways of doing things?
Can men, women, and children have the Spirit?
Is the Gospel I believe based on Scripture or my thoughts of Scripture?
Does God only help those who help themselves?
Is submitting to the Spirit of Jesus worth it?
The way forward is on our knees in submission.
We cannot continue forward if we are not willing to submit and lay down our pride, arrogance, selfishness, independence, and seek the life of the Spirit.
