Psalm 119:57-64

Psalm 119:57–64 ESV

57 The Lord is my portion; I promise to keep your words. 58 I entreat your favor with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise. 59 When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies; 60 I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments. 61 Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget your law. 62 At midnight I rise to praise you, because of your righteous rules. 63 I am a companion of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts. 64 The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love; teach me your statutes!

Throughout Psalm 119 we see an active dependence on God’s Word.

This active dependence is seen in this section of scripture in v. 57, 58, 61, 49, 64, 52, etc.

This Psalm is giving us hope in a few different ways in the midst of hard times...

Hope in God’s Word

v. 49 Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope

v. 58 I entreat your favor with all my heart

Our hope is in God’s word alone.

What he promises and what He commands

God never gives us egregious commands

1 John 5:3 ESV

3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

1 John 5:4 ESV

4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

Hope in God’s Attributes

God’s love (v. 64)

God’s graciousness (v. 58)

God’s nearness (v.62) At midnight!!!

The writer of Psalms focuses on God’s attributes to give him hope in the midst of hardship. These attributes come from a thorough understanidng of God’s word

Hope in God’s Friends

Good friends push us towards a good God.
