Why Jesus Isn't Afraid Of Today or Tomorrow
Luke 13:31 ESV
31 At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.”
A strong sense of destiny comes with this verse. Jesus is going to Jerusalem to die.
The last time Herod was heard from in Luke, he was perplexed at reports of Jesus miracles. He had beheaded John the baptist, and the new reports were that Jesus was John returned from the dead.
See Luke 9.7-9
Luke 9:7–9 ESV
7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, 8 by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. 9 Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.
Why are Pharisees concerned about Jesus safety? They weren’t. They wanted him back in Judea where they could watch him, trap him, and destroy him. So they tried to get him out of Jerusalem.
Luke 13:32 ESV
32 And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course.
Jesus calle Herod a fox. In our culture, a fox is sly. In that culture, a fox was insignificant.
“Today and tomorrow”… Jesus is telling us that this is the time of his present opportunity. The time was present, but it was short.
Luke 13:33 ESV
33 Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’
Destiny. I must go on, I must keep going… I’ve got to keep the clock ticking.
Jesus not only eppected to suffer, he expected to die as a prophet.... it was part of the task. ‘
Luke 13:34 ESV
34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!
Jerusalem is to be noticed. He mentions her by name 3 times in this passage.
Luke 13:35 ESV
35 Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”
Your house… could Jesus be talking about the temple he visited as a small boy when his father and mother left him behind?

The Schedule for Jesus.

Danger. Jesus wasn’t bothered by it. He was on schedule.
Because I could not stop for Death— He kindly stopped for me— The Carriage held but just Ourselves— And Immortality.= Emily Dickinson
The Schedule for Jesus
John 2.4.
John 7.30.
John 8.20.
John 13.1.
John 17.1.
Remember what he said to his mother in John 2.4
John 2:4 ESV
4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”
Nothing was going to deter him… speed it up or slow it down.
John 7:30 ESV
30 So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
John 8:20 ESV
20 These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
John 13:1 ESV
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
John 17:1 ESV
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,
Jesus was on schedule… From the beginning of eternity, Jesus, the Son of God, would be crucified in Jerusalem at Passover.... SEe 1 Peter 1.20
1 Peter 1:20 ESV
20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you
See Revelation 13.8
Revelation 13:8 ESV
8 and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.
Even Herod could not put God off schedule.

The Future for Israel

And along with the schedule for Jesus, there is a Future for Israel.
The Messiah will return and be recognized and received by the people.
Luke 13:35 ESV
35 Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”
When we read that 35th verse, we see Palm Sunday. Look a little deeper.
While they did in fact say it on Palm Sunday, they do not have their true fulfilment until Jesus returns in glory.
The Future for Israel
Zechariah 12.10.
Zechariah 14.4-ff.
Matthew 24.30-31.
Consider Zechariah 12.10
Zechariah 12:10 ESV
10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
Zechariah 14:4–8 ESV
4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward. 5 And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him. 6 On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost. 7 And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light. 8 On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter.
Matthew 24:30–31 ESV
30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

The Present Reality For Israel

The Present Reality For Israel
desolate.
not forsaken
without peace until...
Israel’s house has been left desolate.
There is no king, no temple, no sacrifice. See Hosea 3.4-5
Hosea 3:4–5 ESV
4 For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or household gods. 5 Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the Lord and to his goodness in the latter days.
She’s not forsaken
Romans 11:1–3 ESV
1 I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? 3 “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.”
She is without peace, but will not always be...
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
This messiah must be seated on David’s throne.
Isaiah 11:1–10 ESV
1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. 2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 3 And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, 4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins. 6 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. 7 The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. 9 They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. 10 In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

The Worse It Gets The Better He Is

It takes little danger to fear the worst; It takes less faith to know God’s best. Imagine if you had more faith.
God Has a plan. Jesus has a plan.
Matthew 24:3–14 ESV
3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 4 And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. 9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. 10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
