Introduction
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Text
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.
17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.
21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”
Big Idea
If the believer is going to believe and follow Jesus, the believer needs to live within the Kingdom of God.
The kingdom of God is the central message Jesus teaches.
The Kingdom of God is Real
The Kingdom of God is Real
Jesus preached and taught about the Kingdom. Over seventy-five times (over a hundred if counting parallels) the Kingdom is addressed by Jesus.
Jesus used different teaching methods to convey the truth and reality of the Kingdom.
Poetry (parallelism—synonyms, antithetic, steps, chiastic; over 200 examples).
Proverbs (general principles/not absolutes).
Exaggeration (overstatement or hyperbole)
Parables (often utilizes comparisons).
43 but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.”
The Kingdom of God refers to the rule (reign of God). It is different that the church (the people of God).
Jesus taught that the kingdom is a present reality (the Kingdom is at hand) AND a future hope.
In other words, The kingdom can be defined as God’s final, decisive exercising of his sovereign reign, which was inaugurated during Jesus’s ministry and will be consummated at his return.
Therefore, it is essential for the believer to recognize the authority of God (His Kingdom Rule).
The Believer Lives in the Context of the Kingdom of God
The Believer Lives in the Context of the Kingdom of God
Jesus teaches us to live and experience the rule of God in our lives.
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Jesus came not only in fulfillment of promises of the Davidic king who would rule over Israel and the nations, he also came as a prophet who is greater than Moses (Deut. 18:18).
In that role, he taught how kingdom citizens should conduct themselves.
Studying and applying the teachings of Jesus to our lives is a life-long journey, filled with hope and challenges.
Learning what Jesus ment and how He wants us to apply His teachings takes work!
First, we need to be aware of what literary types Jesus is using, especially exaggerations.
Second, not all of Jesus’ teachings requires a universal application (i.e. rich young ruler).
Third, we must seek to understand the original intent of Jesus. Avoid reading into the teaching your own modern experiences. (poor (economic) and poor in spirit (dependence on God).
Why is living the kingdom truth so important!
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Kingdom living is all about orienting our lives to that of Jesus Christ—and from the outflow of our relationship with Him, we do His will. It is about being and doing.
Jesus is Lord of the Kingdom of God
Jesus is Lord of the Kingdom of God
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
