The End Time Shepherd
in chapters 9&10 we saw the end times
the regathering of the sheep, Israel
the shepherds/ leaders the God hated
the good shepherd that will care for the sheep
the shepherd that will put the nations in their place
there was a reason that the sheep were in that predicament
scattered all over the world
Israel destroyed
Jerusalem devastated
the land uninhabitable
either desert, or malaria infested swamp land
and the reason for all of this is the subject we are looking at today
Read Zechariah 11
Pray
Wail
the start of chapter 10 God promises an abundance of rain
the rain is to replenish what the fire destroyed
the pride of the north will be destroyed
from north to south the land of Israel is destroyed
the trees are wailing , the wildlife is wailing, the people are wailing
this destruction
why is the land and the country being destroyed
after God miraculously protected Israel
why does this prophecy end in such tragedy
The Shepherd
This prophecy is another play
God having Zechariah play the part of the Good Shepherd
if you know this this chapter is easier to understand
sometimes it sounds like its Jesus speaking and sometimes it sounds like Zechariah
the time period of this prophecy is the time of Christ’s ministry
and the destruction is 40 years later when Rome destroys Jerusalem is Ad 70
Zechariah is instructed to imitate what Jesus is going to do
shepherd a doomed flock
what did Jesus do when he did His ministry
fed the 5000, healed multitude of people, taught daily the things of Heaven
He raised the dead, He gave them all the signs that He was the Messiah
but what did Israel do Crucify Him, Crucify Him
next few verses is the narration from God on what is going to happen
in Ad 70 the Romans came in and slaughtered 1.1 million
sold others into slavery
the ones doing the selling is saying praise God for the money
the Israelite leaders leaders don’t even care about them
Zechariah 11:6 (LEB)
For I will no longer have compassion on the inhabitants of the land,” declares Yahweh.
“Look, I am going to cause humankind to fall, each into the hand of his neighbor, and into the hand of his king; and they will devastate the land, and I will not deliver anyone from their hand.”
God is going to step back and allow this to happen
into the hand of his king?
John 19:15 (LEB)
Then those shouted, “Away with him!
Away with him!
Crucify him!”
Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?”
The chief priests replied, “We do not have a king except Caesar!”
back to the shepherd
He took two staffs
the staff is for guidance, retrieval, picking up a baby to bring it to it’s mom
2 staffs. 1 called kindness, favor, pleasantness
other called bound together, unity
with these 2 the shepherd will watch over the flock
this sounds good but …
then 3 shepherds were eliminated by God
I believe at the invasion AD 70
So God turned the people over to their oppressors
the covenant/ the hand of God that kept them at bay was taken away
Zechariah 11:11 (LEB)
And it was broken on that day.
Then the afflicted of the flock, the ones who were watching me, knew that it was the word of Yahweh.
Zechariah 11:11 (CJB)
On that day when it was broken, the most miserable of the sheep who paid attention to me knew that this was indeed a message from Adonai.
Zechariah 11:11 (KJV 1900)
And it was broken in that day: and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the Lord.
the poor are the ones who listened to Jesus and believed
this is the church in Jerusalem at the time of the invasion
they saw the handwriting on the wall and escaped from Jerusalem
I think here Zechariah is asking the audience who is there
as a prophet give me my wages if you see fit
the wages given was the same for compensation for a gored slave
30 pieces of silver
the same that was given for the capture of Jesus
this is the sum that they thought Jesus was worth
the next morning Judas threw the money onto the temple floor
they used the money to buy the potters field
remember this is a prophecy
how true it came
Jesus nurtured, fed, healed, rose people from the dead
how little they valued Him
they refused to recognize Jesus as their Messiah
so Israel will be split up, sent all over the world
the people were broken up sent away to the uttermost
The Foolish Shepherd
the Antichrist
there will come a false shepherd who they will accept
they will welcome him with open arms
there is the antichrist coming to Israel and he will do the worst atrocities ever
we will get into that in upcoming chapters
right now in Israel they are greatly looking forward to the coming of the Messiah
the first time he came they rejected Him
they are still looking for Him
God will destroy the Antichrist
