The End Time Shepherd

in chapters 9&10 we saw the end times
the regathering of the sheep, Israel
the shepherds/ leaders the God hated
the good shepherd that will care for the sheep
the shepherd that will put the nations in their place
there was a reason that the sheep were in that predicament
scattered all over the world
Israel destroyed
Jerusalem devastated
the land uninhabitable
either desert, or malaria infested swamp land
and the reason for all of this is the subject we are looking at today
Read Zechariah 11
Pray

Wail

the start of chapter 10 God promises an abundance of rain
the rain is to replenish what the fire destroyed
Zechariah 11:1 LEB
Open your doors, O Lebanon, so that fire will devour your cedars!
the pride of the north will be destroyed
Zechariah 11:2 LEB
Wail, O juniper, for the cedar has fallen, for the magnificent trees are ruined! Wail, oaks of Bashan, for the impenetrable forest has come down!
Zechariah 11:3 LEB
Listen to the wailing of the shepherds, for their splendor is ruined! Listen to the roar of the young lions, for the thickets of the Jordan are ruined!
from north to south the land of Israel is destroyed
the trees are wailing , the wildlife is wailing, the people are wailing
this destruction
why is the land and the country being destroyed
after God miraculously protected Israel
why does this prophecy end in such tragedy

The Shepherd

This prophecy is another play
God having Zechariah play the part of the Good Shepherd
if you know this this chapter is easier to understand
sometimes it sounds like its Jesus speaking and sometimes it sounds like Zechariah
the time period of this prophecy is the time of Christ’s ministry
and the destruction is 40 years later when Rome destroys Jerusalem is Ad 70
Zechariah 11:4 LEB
Thus says Yahweh my God: “Shepherd the flock doomed to slaughter.
Zechariah is instructed to imitate what Jesus is going to do
shepherd a doomed flock
what did Jesus do when he did His ministry
fed the 5000, healed multitude of people, taught daily the things of Heaven
He raised the dead, He gave them all the signs that He was the Messiah
but what did Israel do Crucify Him, Crucify Him
next few verses is the narration from God on what is going to happen
Zechariah 11:5 LEB
The ones buying them kill them and go unpunished, and the ones selling them say, ‘Blessed be Yahweh, for I have become rich.’ Their own shepherds have no compassion for them.
in Ad 70 the Romans came in and slaughtered 1.1 million
sold others into slavery
the ones doing the selling is saying praise God for the money
the Israelite leaders leaders don’t even care about them
Zechariah 11:6 (LEB)
For I will no longer have compassion on the inhabitants of the land,” declares Yahweh. “Look, I am going to cause humankind to fall, each into the hand of his neighbor, and into the hand of his king; and they will devastate the land, and I will not deliver anyone from their hand.”
God is going to step back and allow this to happen
into the hand of his king?
John 19:15 (LEB)
Then those shouted, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests replied, “We do not have a king except Caesar!”
back to the shepherd
Zechariah 11:7 LEB
And I shepherded the flock doomed to slaughter, even the afflicted of the flock. I took two staffs, one I called Kindness, and the other I called Unity, and I shepherded the flock.
He took two staffs
Psalm 23:4 LEB
Even when I walk in a dark valley, I fear no evil because you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
the staff is for guidance, retrieval, picking up a baby to bring it to it’s mom
2 staffs. 1 called kindness, favor, pleasantness
other called bound together, unity
with these 2 the shepherd will watch over the flock
this sounds good but …
then 3 shepherds were eliminated by God
I believe at the invasion AD 70
Zechariah 11:8 LEB
And I got rid of three shepherds in one month, for I grew impatient with them, and they also became tired of me.
Zechariah 11:9 LEB
So I said, “I will not shepherd you! The one dying will die, and the one to be destroyed will be destroyed. And the ones remaining, let them devour the flesh of each other.”
Zechariah 11:10 LEB
And I took my staff Kindness and broke it, to break my covenant that I had made with all the peoples.
So God turned the people over to their oppressors
the covenant/ the hand of God that kept them at bay was taken away
Zechariah 11:11 (LEB)
And it was broken on that day. Then the afflicted of the flock, the ones who were watching me, knew that it was the word of Yahweh.
Zechariah 11:11 (CJB)
On that day when it was broken, the most miserable of the sheep who paid attention to me knew that this was indeed a message from Adonai.
Zechariah 11:11 (KJV 1900)
And it was broken in that day: and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the word of the Lord.
the poor are the ones who listened to Jesus and believed
this is the church in Jerusalem at the time of the invasion
they saw the handwriting on the wall and escaped from Jerusalem
Zechariah 11:12 LEB
And I said to them, “If it seems right to you, give me my wages, but if not, keep them.” And they weighed out my wages, thirty silver shekels.
I think here Zechariah is asking the audience who is there
as a prophet give me my wages if you see fit
the wages given was the same for compensation for a gored slave
30 pieces of silver
the same that was given for the capture of Jesus
this is the sum that they thought Jesus was worth
Zechariah 11:13 LEB
And Yahweh said to me, “Throw it to the potter,” this noble price at which I was valued by them!” So I took the thirty silver shekels and I threw them to the potter in the house of Yahweh.
the next morning Judas threw the money onto the temple floor
they used the money to buy the potters field
remember this is a prophecy
how true it came
Jesus nurtured, fed, healed, rose people from the dead
how little they valued Him
Luke 19:41–44 LEB
And when he approached and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “If you had known on this day—even you—the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For days will come upon you and your enemies will put up an embankment against you, and will surround you and press you hard from all directions. And they will raze you to the ground, you and your children within you, and will not leave a stone upon a stone within you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”
they refused to recognize Jesus as their Messiah
so Israel will be split up, sent all over the world
Zechariah 11:14 LEB
Then I broke my second staff Unity to break the family ties between Judah and Israel.
the people were broken up sent away to the uttermost

The Foolish Shepherd

the Antichrist
Zechariah 11:15 LEB
And Yahweh said to me, “Take again the implements of a foolish shepherd.
there will come a false shepherd who they will accept
Zechariah 11:16 LEB
For look, I am raising up a shepherd in the land who will not attend to the ones that are perishing; he will not seek the young man, he will not heal the ones that are crushed and he will not sustain the healthy ones; he will devour the flesh of the fattened ones and tear apart even their hoofs.
they will welcome him with open arms
there is the antichrist coming to Israel and he will do the worst atrocities ever
we will get into that in upcoming chapters
right now in Israel they are greatly looking forward to the coming of the Messiah
the first time he came they rejected Him
they are still looking for Him
Zechariah 11:17 LEB
“Woe, my worthless shepherd who deserts the flock! May a sword fall on his arm and on his right eye! May his arm wither completely and his right eye be utterly blinded!”
God will destroy the Antichrist
He will beat satan into the lake of fire

The Foolish Follower

Which Jesus are you following?
there a lot of Jesus’ out in this world
are you following the Jesus of the Bible
or a Jesus of your own imagination
are you saved by faith and faith alone
Ephesians 2:8–9 LEB
For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so that no one can boast.
or are you saved by doing something
or have you rejected Jesus outright
are you like the Jewish leaders who saw all of the miracles and teachings
and killed Him because He was a threat to your lifestyle
The Israelite people rejected Jesus and as a result they were tortured, killed, sent as rats scurrying from their homes to wherever they could find a new place
there is coming a time on this planet very soon that God is going to say Enough
I have waited long enough for people to come to Jesus
for people to repent and turn to God
what happened to the Israelites is a small sample of what the Lake of fire will be like for eternity
Jesus is coming soon for His people
don’t be left behind
