*** MAP: It’s been a long trip, about 80 miles
*** No slide: Jesus has told his disciples again and again what’s going to happen to him, where he’s headed.
*** PETER: El Greco’s image of Peter. 1) He’s asked who people say he is, and Peter has responded, “The Messiah of God”
Luke 9:21–22 NRSV
He sternly ordered and commanded them not to tell anyone, saying, “The Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”
*** TRANSFIGURATION: Raphael
Luke 9:43–45 NRSV
And all were astounded at the greatness of God. While everyone was amazed at all that he was doing, he said to his disciples, “Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands.” But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was concealed from them, so that they could not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
*** JESUS WEEPS OVER JERUSALEM, modern artist Linda Richardson
Luke 13:33–34 NRSV
Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.’ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!
***JESUS SPEAKING TO HIS DISCIPLES, James Tissot
Luke 18:31–33 NRSV
Then he took the twelve aside and said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. For he will be handed over to the Gentiles; and he will be mocked and insulted and spat upon. After they have flogged him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise again.”
*** ANCIENT JERUSALEM

At the edge

*** NO SLIDE. That’s what Palm Sunday is, at the edge of Holy Week, the beginning of the week in which Jesus does what he’s come to do. Jesus is situated on the hill right next to the hill of Jerusalem, and he’s prepared to make an entrance
Luke 19:29–31 NRSV
When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ”
*** DONKEY. Compared to Caesar, a humble animal. But in the context of Jewish history, an animal ridden by kings. And for the person who knew scripture well, this scene would have brought several scriptures to mind
Zechariah 9:9 NRSV
Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
2 Kings 9:13 NRSV
Then hurriedly they all took their cloaks and spread them for him on the bare steps; and they blew the trumpet, and proclaimed, “Jehu is king.”
Psalm 118:26 NRSV
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord.
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!”
*** NO SLIDE. We’ve come full circle. Remember what the angels said to the shepherds in the very beginning of Luke?
*** SHEPHERDS
Luke 2:14 NRSV
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”
