Introduction
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim And the horse from Jerusalem; And the bow of war will be cut off. And He will speak peace to the nations; And His dominion will be from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth.
12 On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13 took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.”
14 Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written,
15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”
16 These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him.
4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold your King is coming to you, Gentle, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
There are two words used here when we are told to rejoice and shout
The first is גיל - to rejoice in a loud way, to leap with joy, it is joy visibly expressed
13 Shout for joy, O heavens! And rejoice, O earth! Break forth into joyful shouting, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted His people And will have compassion on His afflicted.
The second is רוע - to cry out, to shout, to raise the alarm, to let out a war cry.
5 “It shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people will go up every man straight ahead.”
related to the greek κηρυσσω - to proclaim, or announce, κηρυσσο is used in the LXX in Zech 9:9 for ruah
These words here first indicate that we are to have an expression of praise and rejoicing over the king that his expressive even in our actions.
Second, these words indicate that we are to not keep this coming of the king to ourselves!
We are to rejoice, shout, proclaim, jump with joy, that the KING HAS ARRIVED!
Why should we rejoice and shout for the king?
Why should we rejoice and shout for the king?
I believe that these words are indicating something for us today.
The coming of Jesus Brings Joy
we are to rejoice in a great way over Jesus
we are to share it with others
But why should we rejoice, and what should we share.
I. The King is Coming
I. The King is Coming
Zechariah’s context - post exilic
Jesus’ Context - Roman Oppression
Our context - Eschatological
You should rejoice over the coming of Jesus
You should rejoice over his second coming
8 in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.
You should share it with others
Do you believe in the coming of Jesus?
II. The King is Righteous
II. The King is Righteous
he is coming in righteousness
He is not like kings of the past nor kings of the present
You cannot compare him to people in this world, for he is the source of righteousness and holiness
He has come to defeat unrighteousness on the cross
He has come to bring righteousness to you
Don’t keep that to yourselves
Do you believe in a righteous God?
III. The King has Salvation
III. The King has Salvation
The king has been saved
From the cross
The king has salvation
The king will give salvation
Do you rejoice over your salvation?
IV. The King is Humble
IV. The King is Humble
The Humble king of Zech 9:9 is mounted on a donkey
The King Jesus shown to us in the Gospels is hung upon a tree
DO not take these pictures as indications of weakness in Christ
He did things which may appear weak, but he is NOT weak by any means
The king who is coming will be mounted on a White horse
11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.
12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.
13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.
14 And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses.
15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.
16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
You need to share this jesus with the World, the world does not see him this way
How do you see him? Do you know him?
V. The King Will Rule in Peace
V. The King Will Rule in Peace
In Zech 9:10 the person has been changed from 3rd person to 1st person
10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim And the horse from Jerusalem; And the bow of war will be cut off. And He will speak peace to the nations; And His dominion will be from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth.
God says, i will bring about peace through this kin
I WIll cut off the chariot
I will cut of the horse
I will cut off the bow of war
Then HE will speak peace to the nations
His dominion will be over the entire earth
Are you apart of the kingdom of the coming king?
