Colossians 2:13–15 NIV
13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
State: He canceled the record of the charges against us
Charges- what Charges?
The mosaic law and all of its regulations and our own sin
Cancelled....
The word used often signified the wiping (scraping) of the papyrus sheets so they could be used again
When Jesus died, the condemning document of your wrongs and God’s righteous requirements were destroyed
John Piper quote
John Piper asks, ‘How was this damning record nailed to the cross? Parchment was not nailed to the cross. Christ was. So Christ became my damning record of bad (and good) deeds. He endured my damnation’.
By his substitutionary atoning death at Calvary, Jesus Christ completely obliterated the law’s demands towards the sinner. Thus we have the words of Isaiah 53:6: ‘The LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all’.
State:
Ever since Genesis the promise was prophesied that (satan/sin) would be crushed
Genesis 3:15 (NIV)
15 And I (God) will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
State: Satan has been corrupting humanity ever since with sin
This put us under God’s judgment for sin
Ephesians explains it like this:
Ephesians 2:1–3 NLT
1 Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 2 You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. 3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.
State:
The weapons that satan had to condemn us with were our failure to fulfill righteousness as God required it.
What was that righteousness we did not fulfill?:
Matthew 22:37–40 NLT
37 Jesus replied, “ ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”
Jesus fulfilled this for us
He loved God with all his heart, soul and mind AND loved his neighbor as himself.
Jesus did what we could not do
Hebrews 4:15 NLT
15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.
2 Corinthians 5:21 NLT
21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
Satan’s ability to accuse us before God and control us was broken by the what was accomplished on the cross
Ephesians says it like this...
Ephesians 2:4–6 NLT
4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) 6 For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.
State: Satan can no longer accuse us before God - because we are perfected in Christ
He still accuses us to ourselves though.
Why? Because we still sin
That’s when we remind ourselves of what was done on the cross
State: Jesus made a public spectacle of the powers and principalities by the cross and the resurrection
How…?
Jesus lived a sinless obedient life regardless of satan’s attempts to stop him
Jesus endured the suffering of the cross
Philippians 2:8 NLT
8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
Jesus rising from the dead proved:
Jesus lived a sinless life ( if not, he would have had the judgment of sin against him)
Jesus had something in him that empowered him to overcome the enemy (Holy Spirit)
And he gave that power to us
Luke 24:49 NLT
49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”
State: Christ’s victory paved the way for God’s overcoming Holy Spirit to dwell in all mankind.
For 3974 years (Adam-Christ) God wanted to dwell amongst his creation man
Adam - God was in the Garden with Adam- but sin separated them (us) from God
Moses - God’s wanted to dwell within the camp with the Israelites
Exodus 25:8 NLT
8 “Have the people of Israel build me a holy sanctuary so I can live among them.
But their sin stopped it.
Israel's sin (Arron and the calf) caused God to withdraw from them
Exodus 33:3 NLT
3 Go up to this land that flows with milk and honey. But I will not travel among you, for you are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I did, I would surely destroy you along the way.”
David/Solomon’s temple
Once a year one person only could go in and stand in God’s presence - not without blood
Jesus’s crucifixion/resurrection took away the sin divide between God and his children.
State: Ephesians speaks about what the cross has done
Ephesians 2:7–10 NLT
7 So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus. 8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
State: God’s plan was to once again have intimate relationship with us
Romans 8:15 NLT
15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”
State: The process for this was:
Jesus living a sinless life
Enduring the judgement, punishment and abandonment of the cross
Because he did these two things....
The Resurrection happened.
We received his righteousness
State: We want the freedom, power and relationship with God that the resurrection offers
But sin/shame/guilt blocks us
We are still a work in progress
God reveals things
The enemy accuses us
We need to go to the forgiveness and cleansing of the cross.
