Revelation 10-11

Revelation 10–11 ESV
Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow over his head, and his face was like the sun, and his legs like pillars of fire. He had a little scroll open in his hand. And he set his right foot on the sea, and his left foot on the land, and called out with a loud voice, like a lion roaring. When he called out, the seven thunders sounded. And when the seven thunders had sounded, I was about to write, but I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said, and do not write it down.” And the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven and swore by him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and what is in it, the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it, that there would be no more delay, but that in the days of the trumpet call to be sounded by the seventh angel, the mystery of God would be fulfilled, just as he announced to his servants the prophets. Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again, saying, “Go, take the scroll that is open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.” So I went to the angel and told him to give me the little scroll. And he said to me, “Take and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.” And I took the little scroll from the hand of the angel and ate it. It was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it my stomach was made bitter. And I was told, “You must again prophesy about many peoples and nations and languages and kings.” Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months. And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.” These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. And if anyone would harm them, fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes. If anyone would harm them, this is how he is doomed to be killed. They have the power to shut the sky, that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague, as often as they desire. And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that symbolically is called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was crucified. For three and a half days some from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb, and those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and exchange presents, because these two prophets had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth. But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here!” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies watched them. And at that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven. The second woe has passed; behold, the third woe is soon to come. Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign. The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.” Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.
These Passages can be broken down into three parts.
Angel with the Scroll - Measuring of the Temple - Two witnesses
Lets start with the Angel and the Scroll
The angel that steps down from heaven is Christ like with the descriptors that are given.
These represent Christ in many ways.
If yiu let me speculate who this angel is , Lets gor to the book of Daniel Chapter 12.
Daniel 12:1–9 ESV
“At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” Then I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others stood, one on this bank of the stream and one on that bank of the stream. And someone said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream, “How long shall it be till the end of these wonders?” And I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream; he raised his right hand and his left hand toward heaven and swore by him who lives forever that it would be for a time, times, and half a time, and that when the shattering of the power of the holy people comes to an end all these things would be finished. I heard, but I did not understand. Then I said, “O my lord, what shall be the outcome of these things?” He said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are shut up and sealed until the time of the end.
(rainbow over his head) Mercy & Covenant - even in wrath God remembers His mercy AMEN
(wrapped in a cloud) - Gods Glory, Rev 1:7
Revelation 1:7 ESV
Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.
(face like the sun) - strength
Revelation 1:16 (NASB95)
In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in its strength.
(Legs like Pillars of Fire) - Strength and Might
Revelation 1:15 NASB95
His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters.
He shouts in seven thunders - What were they ? - Victory ( is my guess)
Job 37:5 NASB95
“God thunders with His voice wondrously, Doing great things which we cannot comprehend.
This is why it was not written down because it is in-comprehensible
Little Scroll
SWEET AND BITTER
was eaten just like Ezekiel
Ezekiel 2:9 NASB95
Then I looked, and behold, a hand was extended to me; and lo, a scroll was in it.
Ezekiel 3:3 NASB95
He said to me, “Son of man, feed your stomach and fill your body with this scroll which I am giving you.” Then I ate it, and it was sweet as honey in my mouth.
He received it then he was sent out. It then became a very tough road.
Measuring of the Temple
Told to measure the temple ( the Greek translation of the word actually comes back as church) but not the outer court because it was given over to the nations. It will be trampled down. for 42 months or basically 3 1/2 years. Luke also talks about this
Luke 21:24 NASB95
and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
How long is the tribulation? 7 years This is half of it. This is reflected in daniel ch 7
Some say this is the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem and the beginning of Temple worship and the Antichrist will take his seat in the temple and proclaim he is God.
In other words he has something to do with the Temple building and the Worship.
2 Thessalonians 2:3–4 NASB95
Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.
We do know that Ezekiel was asked to measure the temple in Ezekiel chapter 40. In this case it was just the temple and not the outer court.
Why measure the temple - It just sounds really random?
It is in the vision so you can see the that there is a division between the sacred and the profane.
It is not a measurement of dimensions it is a measurement of what is protected and preserved with what is not.
In the midst of Judgement there is grace and mercy
God always has a remnant.
There is always a sanctuary and those in the sanctuary are set apart - AMEN
Is this important for you to know today? Yes
God always has a stronghold
Psalm 18:1–19 NLT
I love you, Lord; you are my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies. The ropes of death entangled me; floods of destruction swept over me. The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death laid a trap in my path. But in my distress I cried out to the Lord; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry to him reached his ears. Then the earth quaked and trembled. The foundations of the mountains shook; they quaked because of his anger. Smoke poured from his nostrils; fierce flames leaped from his mouth. Glowing coals blazed forth from him. He opened the heavens and came down; dark storm clouds were beneath his feet. Mounted on a mighty angelic being, he flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. He shrouded himself in darkness, veiling his approach with dark rain clouds. Thick clouds shielded the brightness around him and rained down hail and burning coals. The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded amid the hail and burning coals. He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies; great bolts of lightning flashed, and they were confused. Then at your command, O Lord, at the blast of your breath, the bottom of the sea could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were laid bare. He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me. They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress, but the Lord supported me. He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me.
You are safe in the midst of Terrible wickedness.
Two Witnesses
Described as Olive trees and Lampstands
They have power and authority.
During there time there will be a drought for the 3 1/2 years
The beast from the pit will rise up and kill them, and people will be happy about it
Dan7 explains that the beast is the AntiChrist.
There dead bodies will lie in Jerusalem but written as Sodom and Egypt which symbolizes an immoral and antichrist spirit
There message was repentence- You know this by the way they are dressed (in sack cloth)
Zechariah gives you an idea of what they represent
Zechariah 4:12 NASB95
And I answered the second time and said to him, “What are the two olive branches which are beside the two golden pipes, which empty the golden oil from themselves?”
Zechariah 4:14 NASB95
Then he said, “These are the two anointed ones who are standing by the Lord of the whole earth.”
Zechariah 3:1 NASB95
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him.
Zechariah 4:6–7 NASB95
Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel saying, ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘What are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain; and he will bring forth the top stone with shouts of “Grace, grace to it!” ’ ”
A priest and a governor
Religious with political
When you were in verse 6 of chapter 11 the two witnesses would be seen as Moses and Elijah.
These two witnesses will be symbolic of them.
God protects them until there work is done. -
Driving back from outreach and the last 100 miles - It reminded me that I was operating under Gods grace the whole trip.
But after 3 1/2days They are raised from the dead
Conclusion ?
After all this the seventh Trumpet sounds
All Heaven rejoices -
Like the Cross when Jesus said it is finished, in this case it really is.
In theses last passages of Chapter 11 we see three blessings
Remember them !
He Reigns
He judges Righteously
He rewards
Sometimes in Life you might look defeated, you might feel defeated but your not.
