Under Our Roof:
A Spirit-Filled Wife
Intro Main Idea: We have a distorted and unbiblical view of submission.
Submission is not less than or a servant to.
Submission is a beautiful display of who Christ is and what He calls each of us to.
Proper view of biblical submission is exemplified through and by Jesus.
Not about value, but order!
Luke 2:51 Just submitted to His earthly parents.
“Let the wife make her husband glad to come home everyday, and let the husband make his wife sorry to see him leave everyday.”
-Martin Luther
The way a husband leads can make submission a joy or make submission feel like a job.
“It is true that the number one reason that relationships of all kinds go bad is neglect.
Here is the structure of every relationship this side of eternity: a flawed person in relationship to a flawed person, in a fallen world, but with a faithful God.
Since it is a flawed person in relationship to a flawed person, if you are in a relationship, you simply cannot let that relationship coast and expect that it will be okay.”
-Paul David Tripp
Negligence equals deterioration
1.
A spirit-filled wife glorifies GOD through SUBMISSION.
(22) (To Christ and His word first then to your husband)
Result: God is pleased through her obedience.
Main Point: Beyond the mutual submission for each of us, there is a martial submission in the home.
Wives must submit and the men must lead.
Submission starts with attitude/mental/think (How she thinks about husband)
Submission and leadership are God-given positions, that are for the good of the family.
Illustration: Ronald Reagan, everyone would stand, the people voted, about position
The way in which a wife submits to her husband is a direct reflection of how she submits to God.
Some Christian wives will salute the submission of the church to Jesus, while rejecting the submission of themselves to their husband.
A wife will never submit to her husband publicly if she isn’t submitted to her husband privately.
Why is submission so hard for some women?
Because only they have seen their husbands at their absolute worst.
Remember, Jesus saw you at your absolute worst, but still submitted Himself to the Cross.
2. A spirit-filled wife blesses her family through sacrifice.
(23-24) (Your desires to Christ Word for your husband)
Result: Family is edified through her sacrifice.
Main Point: The wife’s sacrificial submission to the husband’s guidance is a light and the cornerstone of a spirit-filled family.
Submission is sacrificial because it goes against the natural flow of the fall.
The wife’s obedience in this area will be a blessing to her family and will edify them all.
Illustration: Martin Luther - living in filth - changed his home and health - encouraged his hobbies - lute “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”
Head, HEART, hands - joy/pleasure/happiness/fulfillment
A married woman’s first ministry is to her husband, then to her children, and then to other things in the church.
Women become miserable when these get out of order!
Some say children make a rich woman poor.
Actually children make a poor woman rich.
A rich mother can’t take her house or money to heaven, but a Godly mother is taking her children.
A mother’s responsibility is to create a home where her children can easily love and follow Jesus.
3. A spirit-filled wife encourages her husband through respect.
(33) (Your obedience to God will encourage your husband to lead)
Result: Husband is encouraged through her respect.
Main Point: A husband is fueled, focused and fearless when his wife respects him and stands behind him.
A husband feels tremendous strength when his wife believes in him and supports him.
Head, Heart, HANDS - practical/actions/DEFER
Are you actions deferring to your husband or defeating his position?
Wives have a ministry to their husbands
You can’t pray/minister to your husband if you are focused on his flaws
“Be careful not to miss your MINISTRY because of your MISERY.”
-Tony Evans
Your spouse is not your enemy.
However, if you neglect your greatest blessing it can be a tremendous burden.
Satan’s most consistent attack is on the FAMILY.
“The greatest source of SECURITY our children have in this world is a God-honoring, Christ-centered MARRIAGE between their parents.”
