The Holy Spirit Lives Inside Every Believer

But Christianity is more than a religion. It is a relationship with God—an intimate personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Question: What is a religion?
Questions: How is Christianity than a religion?
No other religion can make quite the same claim. Only Christians can say that their God—the one true God—actually lives in them.
Question: How can this be?
The Holy Spirit is God. The Bible states in no uncertain terms that there is but one God: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4).
Where did the Holy Spirit come from?
God—He was part of creation (Psalm 104:30), He knows all truth (John 14:16), and He is omnipresent (Psalm 139:7).
30 When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?
The Holy Spirit has a unique ministry.
He gave them this promise: “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14:26).
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
How long will The Spirit be with us?
The Holy Spirit will remain on Earth, indwelling believers and guiding them until Jesus returns.
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8)
After the crucifixion and resurrection and the coming of the Spirit, the disciples and Apostles where hiding.
But after the coming of the Spirit, their courage took a dramatic upturn. The small band of followers, empowered by the Spirit, burst into the city of Jerusalem and began to minister powerfully to the people around them.
Question: How would you define the Spirit as a helper or a “force.”
The Holy Spirit is the very presence of God within us.
He is our helper, not an impersonal force.
His personhood is evident by the fact that when sin controls us, we “grieve the Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 4:29-31).
29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
The Spirit is also quenched when we stifle the use of our spiritual gifts to Christ’s body, the church (1 Thessalonians 5:19).
19 Do not quench the Spirit.
Question: What does that look like?
That the Spirit grieves and can be quenched indicates He is a person.
The Holy Spirit enables us with spiritual gifts.
We are all gifted in various ways for the benefit of fellow believers: “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.
There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:4-7).
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;
6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
The Holy Spirit promotes Christlike conduct

When a person believes in Jesus Christ and comes into the family of God, he is a new person. T
That’s why becoming a Christian is often called being “born again.”
Question: What does that mean?
This new birth is an instantaneous act in which a person receives a righteous standing before God.
As a believer, you have the Holy Spirit living in you. His ministry is to help you grow holier.
Theologians refer to this growth process as “sanctification.”
When you allow God’s Spirit to help you, the world will see the life of Jesus in your actions.
Question: How does this happen?
When you “walk by the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16)—that is, when you live under the Spirit’s control—you will not act in an ungodly way.
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Rather, you will exhibit Christlike behavior. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the character qualities that are exhibited when a person is controlled by the Spirit.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
These qualities are known as “the fruit of the Spirit,” and they are “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
The Holy Spirit is an intercessor
But the Holy Spirit is also an intercessor. The apostle Paul speaks of the Spirit’s intercessory ministry in Romans 8:26: “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
What Does This Mean for You?
What Does This Mean for You?
An understanding of the work and ministry of the Holy Spirit is vital to your growth as a believer.
It is through the Holy Spirit that God is made personal in your life.
It is through the Spirit that you experience God.
It is through His work that you know God’s presence within you.
You also see His influence as you respond to Him in obedience.
He illuminates your understanding of spiritual things when you read the Bible.
He empowers your ministry through the spiritual gifts He gives you for service. And He also guarantees your future inheritance in heaven:
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
